Thread: TRAVEL ADVICE WANTED

    Default TRAVEL ADVICE WANTED

I should probably break this into two segments.

At the end of this month we will be in East Anglia for a few days. Any suggestions for folks to meet, sights to see, hidden troves of 1/200 models or out-of-print books, particularly tasty morsels (notably lamb and meat pies) to try, "Don't miss" events, or Jag tuners experienced with Tremec manual shift conversions? We will be conferring with old friends Chris Sayer (Shed Models), Wojtek Benzinski (Cloudburst), Derek Barratt (Metalmodels) and Paul Howard (Helmet 1/200), so we are already in good hands.

Then, in what may be the White Hope Department (read Bernard Cornwell for excellent white hope scenarios) I could definitely use similar guidance for upcoming travel stops on the Canarias and Madeira, with breaks in Bilbao and (unfortunately Joaquim-free) Lisbon. In particular I am looking for information on the early Portuguese navigators and whalers who beat Leif Ericcson to North America by what must have been centuries and doubtless aided worthies like C.Columbus in programming their GPS.

    Many thanks.

Too many to mention individually, but follow the link to all that is good in East Anglia.

From personal experience I'd say these are worth visiting:
Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum (http://www.aviationmuseum.net/)
    100th Bombardment Group Museum (http://www.100bgmus.org.uk/museum.aspx)
Muckleburgh Collection (If you like tanks) (http://www.muckleburgh.co.uk/)

In Lisbon you have the Navy (http://museu.marinha.pt/pt/Paginas/default.aspx#_=_) and Army (not sure it has a website) museums, and just outside Lisbon you have the Portuguese Air Force Museum (http://www.emfa.pt/www/po/musar/index.php?lang=ing). All are recommended.
Run for your life - there are stupid people everywhere!

Where are you going to be based?

Duxford near Cambridge is a must for aviation buffs, but the East has so much to offer, Hendon, (the RAF Museum), the Shuttleworth Collection, the deHavilland Museum near Radlett in Hertfordshire is a nice little outing.
What else do you want? Chocolate box towns like Lavenham, Constable country, Castles at Colchester, Hedingham, Orford, Landguard Fort at Felixtowe, Tilbury fort on the Thames. Stowe Marie's aerodrome ...

Thanks to all for the guidance - especially the confidential advice about the super clearance sale of 1/200 castles. We will be based in Little Ellingham and reaching out from there. Wonderful memories from previous visits, visiting Nelson's old haunts, hunting for where Henry Mk.VIII actually deposited Anne Boleyn, walking old 8th AF bases, meeting Ken (007) Wallis, going Viking at Stow, and so on. I'm getting really psyched for this one.
