Thread: Official FBA type H painting thread

  1. #1

Default Official FBA type H painting thread

My FBA type H, in RNAS guise, though not actually used by them in combat.
Only 4 were purchased by the British, and they were used for training.
The primary users were the French, Belgians and Italians.

The plain white ones in my display case look so boring compared to a well-painted model! Thanks for sharing that.

Your "ocean" material looks good. Is it some kind of "leather-look" vinyl sheet? It does a good job varying between grey and blue, and it's got nice wave texture without being over the top.

Thanks Daryl, I'm sorry it took so long to post, but much has happened in the real world since I bought the model.

It was a joy to work on, as your models always are.

the sea material is indeed blue vinyl.

That's a great looking model, Daryl, sporting an equally brilliant paint job!

I own one of each of the Macchi M.5s (you know... because I can't stop now), but haven't really looked at them too closely. This and the North Sea Stew (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...me-Day-9-12-15) are causing me to rethink my initial ambivalence towards floatplanes...

After all, what's another few ?

What's not to like about a seaplane!? This little gem looks lovely - well done, indeed

    All the best,

I wish I had read this thread first, it would have saved a lot of research ;-)
I have just started painting one of these beauties to join my Italians.
Very nice paint job too :-)

Do you use the G deck, without the flip, as on the forum "Available Aircraft" excel file?
Also, have you found a suitable plane card image, if not I'll have to attempt to make one ;-)

If you do make your own image, feel free to use the top view of the plane from one of my albums on this site: http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/alb...hmentid=142069.

This is an FBA Type H in Italian markings for the Adriatic. From Reduced Aircraft Factory, it is the basic grainy plastic (not the FUD).
    Hope this attaches correctly?

    It did :-)
My painting looks a bit shaky. I'll have to fix that and the MG barrel too...

    Nice Job Teach.
I can't see a problem with your painting, and I'm sure on the table it looks absolutely fine.
How did you do the underside? I can see the hull seems to be painted a pale colour, any chance of another picture?

Nicely done, Teach! I agree with John about your painting: I've noticed these close-up pictures bring out the tiniest errors in painting that you would never notice with the naked eye. That will look great on the gaming table.

Thanks guys :-) The friend taking the photo has got a very good camera (I can't find my little one since we moved!).
I will add a photo of the underside, but for reference, I used the Windsock Datafile on the FBA Type H by Paolo Varriale.
The best references for the underside are the photos of crashed examples, where the wing assembly has broken off/sheared off!

I opted for a white underside, though there were variations as to whether it went part way up the side, or not. Some Italian aircraft had the 3 colours of the national flag painted across the underside of the hull and wings, though I've not seen it on an FBA (yet).

For reference, the wing fabric is Humbrol 71 satin Oak or 103 matt Cream (I can't remember which!)
The brown hull is Vallejo Game Color 72.043 Beasty Brown.
The pilot and gunner are GW Scorched Brown/Army Painter Oak Brown.
The decals are a mixture of Mehusla and Dom's.

I have put together a plane card for the FBA Type H flying boat. I used an existing "sea" base card, borrowed from one of the top 5 contributors to this site. I then badly pasted a cut out photo on top. It is my first proper photo edit and I'm using a very old bit of software. I was born into the scissors and Pritt stick generation ;-)

Nice work Zoe, sorry I missed this at the time but I've been too busy of late (with stupid stuff like work) to get on the site properly.

    Lest we forget
