Thread: Taking Down Bombers

    Default Taking Down Bombers

    I had a little trouble deciding which category this would go in so, move this if necessary.

    When attacking a large bomber or two seater, I take my planes and put them into formation in a diagonal line to the right when attacking from the left and vice versa. We play where only 1 firing arc can fire at 1 plane. I am not sure if that's how it normally is but we decided 1 gun = 1 target for 1 round. Case Closed. The first plane goes in with the next one a quarter ruler behind it and the 3rd behind the second. They all come within ruler range and all can fire. When trying this trick make sure that you are entering only 1 firing arc and not more. The gunner will fire at the closest plane but all 3 still get their shots off. Then I circle around and the 3rd plane becomes the first and they rotate so not only the first plane takes all the shots. switching like that can be done with Immelmann turns.

    You are correct that a firing arc or gun, can only fire at one target per round. That sounds like a good tactic for hitting a bomber... provided you do not have to worry about an escort!

    Not done any BIG bomber work yet as It has not cropped up in the campaign but will give this a try out with my son.

    Sounds feasible. Are you using the altitude rules?

    Any concern of the friendly panes line of fire passing through any of the friendly aircraft forward of them?

    Or worries about collisions?

    With three planes all coming from one direction, pointed at the same target, and all trying to stay within a single arc of the target plane, it sounds as though that little 'cone of death' you are approaching in will get real crowded, real fast.

    @Brian,
    Yes, it can become crowded but that's why they are in a diagonal line so they can still fire to the side but true, that "cone of death" will be come crowded very quickly. Use fast planes.
    @Col.Hajj,
    This wouldn't be the entire "bomber buster" team. There would be others to shoot the bejeezus out of the escorts. And you would use altitude coming out of the sun and off to a side. For a 2 seater, broadside it.

    Has anyone tried firing Le Prieur rockets at bombers? Not a recognised tactic obviously, just wanted to know if anyone has had a go.

    It's a decent match for the better historical tactics too - the bombers of Independent Force hated their run-ins with Jasta 18 in particular, as unlike the less experienced home-defence Kests, the J18 boys would make concentrated attacks to overwhelm aircraft at the edge of a formation.

    Interesting tactic...but the escort still remains a problem.Last time I was shot down by one of the escorting fighters and the bomber had still all his lifepoints

    My first thought went to blocked aim. So you're saying that in this formation all three planes can get a shot off in one round?

    You guys might not be thinking of the formation right, or I may not have explained it all well. The second plane has the first right on the edge of his firing arc. I never thought of using Le Pieurs against bombers. Then there would be balloon busters and bomber busters!

    Here's my strategy: Shoot that @#$%@#% thing out of the sky with as many planes as possible! I just bring in all my planes and shoot at that bomber with all I got! But Le Pieurs aganst bombers... well thats just brilliant... *evil laugh*

    I didn't see this post until now. He never swears when talking, but instead will actually say "bleeping" if he's really animated about something. I'm not really thrilled that he does that and I've let him know. I'd prefer he just doesn't give any indication of swearing. I know that kids now days hear all the bad words every day from other kids, so as long as he's not actually saying it I guess that's a plus. I plan to tell him not to use the @#!% symbols anymore since we all know what they imply. But overall he's a good kid.
