Thread: Ijn Kagero in 1/200" scale, why not?

  1. #1

Default Ijn Kagero in 1/200" scale, why not?

Whilst adrift on Amazon I could not resist this tome. Then I acquired it and opened it! Yikes! Hold the foam!

Astounding book, but the accompanying drawings blew me away! An excellent 1:350 scale black line drawing . . .

Followed by a larger scale (not 1:200) color drawing! Also in excellent detail . . .

Just a wee bit longer than the Asashio class, it will build up at a length of 23.32" Yea! Destroyers on the horizon!

This will be spectacular, too, Dave! Have you given any thought to dipping into WWI smaller ships - perhaps 1/144 destroyers or torpedo boats? They would make fun coastal 'ground' targets...

    All the best,

Do to a tight building/vacation schedule, the elves have elected to go ahead on 6 Kagero class destroyers at this time. Major hull formers cut 6 at a time:

    12 sides, 6 main decks

6 bow decks ready. Now the fun begins!

Caught the elves with the glue gun heating . . . they are banned from all things electric . . .

Blue light means ready go in hot melt glue language : )

Parts prepped, bow tapered to an angle, sides crimped for the final curve of the sides and stern

Foam core decks notched for the assembly

    Cross formers pre-glued in place

Parts in place and glued from below

    And above

Now to ponder the process before finishing the other 5 . . .

How did you put the lip on the foamboard. With a router?

Quite right... and fast. That, to me, is one of the more amazing things: the quality is without question, true, but the speed at which it all comes together...!

Not at this point, I used an X-acto #11 and knife to cut just through the first layer of cardstock and then cut the foam from the edge by hand. Less a challenge than it sounds like, trick is to not cut through the second cardstock . . . As for the speed I build the models several times through in my head before I attack the real thing, helps me see possible challenges or new ideas, so it will be with the Radar Tower and the Dams projects.

    We have destroyer bits!

    Molds on the proto deck

Turrets and torpedo launchers need to be multiplied, but you get the idea!

Tomorrow we make lots of molds, then lottsa parts!

Parts inventory, over 30 items just for the deck!

Aircraft carriers, despite their size, were much easier. The planes that went with them, perhaps not so much.

5 Allied Carriers, US and British, soon one German : ) and 3 IJN . . . running out of water to float them in . . .

So we hot glue the bits to the bottom of a plastic tub . . .

Like so . . . for each bit Then pour the latex mold goo . . .

Then we start pouring the bits . . .

    Six times . . .

Trivial note: Kagero is basically an improved and stretched Asashio, Yugumo an improved Kagero with tweaked bridge and deckhouses on same hull. Going by the IJN's preference to order destroyers a complete 8-ship division at a time and the production numbers, several ships originally intended for build as Kageros ended up completed as Yugumos.

Simply incredible, Dave! Instead of 'raining cats and dogs' perhaps 'pouring like elves' would be more appropriate?

Now the hard part, assembly as you paint, determining the level of detail. Ships are a black hole of detail-the reason I have avoided them all these years. I have even been tempted to crew these guys, at this scale it would be cool . . . But they are other things to build! Meanwhile I ask all you ship advocates what the real color the should be? The book shows a deeper gray blue than other sources indicate. . . Fortunately the elves . . . are here.

As you can see, ships built at Sasebo Arsenal were painted a slightly darker shade than those built at Kure Arsenal.

I like to find good line drawings of top and both side views which I make copies of and glue to the substrate. I then use things paint, more like a stain to gradually add color and detail. Saves a lot of time at this scale to add details like portals, seams and such. The effect seems good for our purposes.

The deck on the Hornet is layers of color-water color style. I got the colors from a guy who worked the flight line on her back in the war, lots of great sharing from him.

Not all usable, but a little filing and painting, and you have crews for AA guns, searchlights etc. Insanely cheap too.

    Or buy in bulk...
