    Summary:
    From the publisher:

The French Nieuport company provided the Allied air forces with the first true fighter scout of World War 1 in the shape of the diminutive Type 11 of 1915. Boasting incredible maneuverability, it was the only aircraft capable of dealing with the all-conquering German Fokker E-series, and was flown by French, British, Russian, Belgian, and Italian aces. The Type 11 was replaced from May 1916 onwards by the bigger and more powerful Type 17, which proved to be one of the best fighters of World War I. Later Nieuport types remained popular with scout pilots into 1918, being used extensively by high-scoring aces aces long after more modern fighters had arrived at the front. The final Nieuport scout to see action was the notoriously unreliable Type 28, which enjoyed fleeting success with the US Air Service in mid-1918.

Another of Osprey's "Aces of World War 1" series, this title is certainly not the strongest... but it, nonetheless, remains one of my favorite. The accomplishments of the little Nieuport scouts and the men who flew them cannot be overstated. This title provides a nice introduction to these men and machines, though it does suffer some from as it doesn't deal much with "the big picture." Even so, I recommend this to anyone interested in Nieuport scouts and the role they played in wresting control of the skies from the Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte in 1916, 1917, and 1918.

As with other titles in this series, "Nieuport Aces of World War I" is blessed with a preponderance of contemporary b/w photos and 40 full-color side views. Sadly, this title does not include any planform (top) views, but the side views include representative samples of the Type 10, 11, 16, 17, 23, 24, 27, and 28.
