Thread: WoG Solo System [Mobile & Desktop]

Lightbulb WoG Solo System [Mobile & Desktop]

    Hello fellow pilots!

I'd like to introduce you WoG Solo System, an helper app for WGF that makes it easier and faster to play with Solo Rules. Add any number of planes to the fight, then set heading, distance and facing of target plane, and press a button to automatically draw maneuver cards without having to check the charts and roll the dice. As further help, every plane has its individual damage counter.

This first post will always be updated with the latest download links and changelog. For help and questions, please first check the F.A.Q or write a post here.
    Check six!

    Download links
    OSX (1.7) --- Windows (1.7) --- Linux (1.7) --- Android (1.7.1)
Windows and Linux builds have not been tested officially - iOS version is no longer available due to App Store account closure

    Pricing
The app is 100% free, without ads or in-app purchases.

    Currently supported Solo Rules sets
    • Standard (by Richard Bradley)
    • Advanced (by Blackronin, based on Standard)
    • 2nd Gen. Advanced (by Blackronin)

    Currently supported decks
    A, B, C, D, D+, E, E+, F, G, G+, H, I, J, J+, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, XA, XB, XC, XD

    Special notes
When a turn ends with an Immelmann, in the next turn the app will automatically draw a straight maneuver first. The remaining maneuvers for that turn will be shifted to the right.

    Compatibility
The last version of the app has been built with Unity Engine 2019.1.0f. A list of unsupported devices is listed here, but be aware this list is currently outdated.

    Changelog
    • v1.7.1
      - Compatibility update.
    • v1.7
      - Compatibility update.
    • v1.6
      - This version completes the deck list, including every official deck from A to Y, from XA to XD, and custom decks D+, E+, G+, J+.
    • v1.5
      - Added maneuver decks D+, E+, G+, I, J, J+, L, M, O, P
      - Menu for adding a new plane has been redesigned and improved for easier use and faster setup
      - From now on, each maneuver deck may have a different number of compatible Solo Rules sets
      - It is now possible to edit health points for each plane; damage counter will turn red again if maximum damage is reached
      - Fixed a critical bug where deck E was using E+ charts
      - Due to the updated layout of the app, landscape orientation support has been removed
      - Added Exit button on Android and desktop versions
      - Updated main help text
      - Other minor fixes
    • v1.4.1
      - Fixed incorrect heading dial orientation
    • v1.4
      - Added maneuver decks E, F, G, H, K, N for all the currently supported rules sets
      - All official planes have been replaced by generic planes, one for each supported maneuver deck (generic planes have no preset resistance points, thus damage counter won't turn red anymore)
      - Plane and pilot name can be edited for each entry
      - Plane icons now show the respective maneuver deck letter
      - Graphics overhaul
      - Minor fixes
    • v1.3
      - Possibly fixed the bug where Android hardware buttons were deactivated (Android)
      - Reverted home button behavior to simply put the app in background instead of closing it (Android)
      - While the app is running, the screen will no longer go in sleep mode (mobile)
      - Added "Destroy all" button
    • v1.2
      - Possibly fixed missing entries inside the popup lists (Android)
      - App process is now killed when pressing the Back navigation button from the main screen (Android)
      - Added SFX On/Off switch
      - Updated main help text
    • v1.1
      - Possibly fixed UI bugs (Windows, Android)
      - When adding a new plane, the popup will no longer close automatically
      - Reduced memory overhead, improved performance
    • v1.0
      - First version!

    F.A.Q.
    - What's the project status?
Right now the project is on hiatus, please check this post for more informations.

    - Why do I have to select a Solo Rules set each time I add new planes?
Because you can assign a different rules set to each plane, to have planes behave differently from each other.

    - Is the desktop version any different from the smartphone version?
    The app is identical.

    - The app completely crashed my device!
Most probably you have downloaded the app very early before unsupported devices were blacklisted. Please refer to "Compatibility" section above.

    Credits
Special thanks to Blackronin for helping me sort out some doubts I had with the 2nd. Gen Advanced charts, to brdavis for helping me coding new decks, to osnn01 and Prodromoi for the useful screenshots, to Richard Bradley for all of his early work with Solo Rules, and of course to you all for the amazing support and REPs!

    No need for that!
I'm just waiting that Apple approves the app, then it will be available on the AppStore too. We just have to wait 7-8 days.

    Danjel,
This is Awesome! Much better looking than the WWII App we are puttering around with. Can't wait for this to be expanded to the Dice-less Deck version.

    DARN!!!

My tablet is too old! I'm running Android 4.0.3 on an Acer A200, and it won't work on my tablet!

When initially developing our WWII App, we had to use "API 15", to make it work on my tablet, if that is any help?

Any chance this can be converted to run on an older machine, Danjel?

Oh man, this shouldn't be happening! I am currently using API Level 9, minimum requirement is Android 2.3.1. Very strange, I guess something is wrong with the Manifest file. I have only a rooted Galaxy S2 to test on (not even mine), but I'll take a look for sure, thanks a lot for pointing this out.
Any particular error/behavior of the app?

EDIT: oh, yes, as someone pointed out in the rep comments, I'd like to support WGS too, but I think it will come much later in the development. Added to the to-do list!

Nice, works really well for me.

I think it says it's optimised for phone, is there a reason you've gone for phone over tablet for this?

The app is universal but it was indeed developed with tablets in mind... Not really sure what Google is thinking, it seems to decide automatically what suits best (on no basis apparently, since it's the same identical app both on tablets and smartphones). I'll check if there are some specific steps to make it "tablet-optimized" on Google Play.

Also I just discovered the problem with OldGuy59's Acer A200 tablet: this app has been made with the latest version of Unity (5.1.2) because it's my bread and butter in office, and I have zero problems using it. Unfortunately, from Unity 5, support for non-NEON CPUs has been dropped and there is no way back. Sadly opening the project with a previous version of Unity doesn't work, so I guess there is not much to do.
I added a link to the Unity Forums in the main post, with a list of unsupported devices. Really sorry!

Thanks everyone for the REPs! <3

I have just added OSX, Windows and Linux download links in the first post. Windows and Linux haven't been tested since I'm on OSX, but if everything goes well, they should launch windowed at 600x800 (yes, vertically!) and be resizable like any other window. Let me know!

As for WGS, I added it on the to-do list. I don't think I can work on it soon, though; there is much to be done on WGF before that! ;)
PS: any iOS device starting from iPhone 4 will run this (better from iPhone 4S and up)!

Forgot to write an important thing in the first post: when the app detects an Immelmann in the last maneuver, the next one (so, the first of a new round) will be forced to be a straight; all the next maneuvers of the same round will be just shifted by one place to the right. It seemed the most logical behavior to me!

Anyways, I did a test run of the app using two special guests, and everything worked flawlessly. So flawless that I had a really hard time at keeping the golden Spad in my sight! In the end I succeded, but with substantial damage. I will probably do more live tests in my days off.

The app completely crashed my tablet. I almost had to wipe it. Nothing was working on the tablet, even though the app wasn't running. I managed to get to the "Settings/Apps" menu and uninstall the App. After that, everything was back to normal.

If you are on GitHub, I might be able to share some code with you for the WWII version we were working on. It was based on Joaquim's [Blackronnin] Dice-less Solo Chart. It would allow selection of aircraft, and maneuver decks, and we were adding in damage tracking (smoke turns, and fire turns of damage), pilot skill levels, and Anti-Aircraft gunnery tracking.

I may be able to re-jig this, if I have my associate look at the code. I may also have to take the college course on App Development, so I can work on the WWII App on my own. My associate is off working full-time in Victoria, and not available for easy consultation any more.

It works on my Windows 7 machine. The window is resizable, but it increases the graphics proportionally, and doesn't provide scroll bars on the edges. The graphics in the window are drag-able, but it really isn't very functional beyond the original window size.

I found that as you select the plane, you need to select the solo system, each time.

Change Request: Interface - Perhaps the solo system should be selected first, then the aircraft could be selected without re-selecting the system.

I have problems with the view in the Windows Version (Win7 64) too.

I was certain the app could have problems with Android, and Samsung in particular. Every time it's a 100% safe bet! What really bugs me is that it seems to work better on older phones. Worked flawlessly on the rooted Galaxy S2+ I have here, why shouldn't it work on Galaxy S3 and more recent models? Ah, the mysteries of Android...

Thanks again everyone for the RPEs and the feedback, I will try to sort out Android and Windows this week. I will be on vacation from 6 to 13 September so I hope I can fix everything before that period!

I have just added a F.A.Q area in the first post. Check it out, there may be answers to your questions. :P

Thanks for reporting! If you could list the other things that go wrong or send a screenshot, it would be great. I need those for fixing the app!

EDIT: Just updated desktop and Android builds to v1.1. The Android one should be out in minutes.
Android has been tested again on Samsung Galaxy S2+ and forks fine. This time I also tested the Windows version on a virtual machine, and it works fine too. Let me know!

I downloaded the Android version of the app this morning (v1.0) to try it out; took some screenshots to give you some bug reports. Have subsequently downloaded v1.1 to see if the bugs are still present in the updated version, which they still are. See text under each photo for details.

    HTC1, Android 4.2.2

    1. Typo: "An helper app..." should read "A helper app..." (Present in v1.0 & v1.1)

    2. The app needs a menu/settings function to enable the user to switch off the sound of the clicks when pressing the 'plus button' (and I presume the other functions click too). I would want to run the app silently, without unnecessary noise. (Present in v1.0 & v1.1)

    3. No planes, rules etc showing on this screen. Tapping the windows does not bring anything up. The 'back button' does return the app to the first screen (as per first photo) correctly. (Present in v1.0 & v1.1)

    4. The app needs a way to enable the user to exit it completely. At the moment the only way to close the app totally is to perform a 'force stop'. (Present in v1.0 & v1.1)

Hope these help. As you might have guessed, I've worked in software testing before! Apologies for the rather poor photos - just quick snaps using my iPad.

Tried again with your latest update and no joy. When I add a plane and use the dial for direction then all the planes I have show a change in dial position even though I am just tapping one. Plan button still deletes all card images and does not replace them. I think I will uninstall and leave this, but as I said before nice try and kudos for your efforts. Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition. It will not install on my Samsung Note II phone either, it just hangs at near the end of the install process I think. I am not much on screen shots sorry. I m thinking that there is a program in the files that did a similar thing to this except it was one card at a time with a beautiful graphical interface. That works fine on a laptop or netbook but again not with my Samsung phones or tablets.

Excellent update Danjel. Just tested v1.2 on Android 4.2.2

Issues 1, 2 & 3 (as per my prior post) now tested and working. Good stuff!

Issue 4 still (in my opinion) needs implementing; a way to end the program from within it, and/or to return to the introductory page.

Looking very good now. Populating the database will be a task, I'm sure! Have you considered what to do about representing plane models that aren't necessarily the standard markings? For example, there are entries for Camel/Barker, Camel/Ellwood, Camel/Olieslagers, Camel/Stackard - but if a player has a different Camel they are using, or say five Camels? What about adding code to replace the name on a model, or having Camel/Custom, which the user could then type in a pilot name? (Extra complexity would involve storing these on the user's device for next time....!)

    Bravo Danjel, developing nicely.

    Thanks a lot. :)

In the to-do list I wrote I'd like to add "blank" planes; I have not really specified it, but as you said, these will be empty planes with customizable name and pilot, represented by the relative Maneuver Deck letter in their icon. Saving them on the device will be a task I'll keep for later... :P
About issue 4, the things you suggested may work better for a desktop app imho. For example, I don't remember seeing any app with an exit button on iOS; on Android it may be different, but I'm not an user of the green robot so I don't really know!
Also, a "Destroy all planes" button could be enough to bring the user back to the "main" page.

These bugs sounds quite crazy to me, especially the dial one! :O
All the app versions share the same identical core code so, except for graphic issues caused by hardware differencies (like the empty lists on Android or the wrong alignment on Windows), everything should work the same way... The best I can do about this is to file a bug report to the Unity team, but other than that, I fear I have no tools to investigate your particular case. Really sorry! :(
The desktop versions should be a safe backup plan, if you wish to use the app. Thanks for your support!

First of all absolutely fantastic - reputation sent!

Ok I downloaded the latest version for windows and Android.

Windows 7 - patched to latest release; works perfectly
Android 4.4.2 on Sharp 304SH: Works perfectly

As others have mentioned the ability to track Fire, Smoke Jammed Guns, rudder damage and pilot injured would be incredible - obviously these would effect the maneuver cards that the plane would have available.

Also for those using the PC version can you tell me how we can tell which version we are using as I could not find any documentation on which version I currently have.

    Hi,

These are probably stupid questions, but my phone claims that the solo rule PDF files are corrupt and refuse to open them so I can't check:

    * Distance to target - measured in ruler lengths, or something else?

    * If there are multiple enemies, which one is used for planning purposes - the one the automated kite is trying to kill, or the one(s) trying to kill it?

    Regards,
    Oerjan

Upon further testing, this may be less of a problem than it first seemed. Probably a low-priority issue as there is a work-around (see below). I don't know if other users have the same problem or it is specific to the HTC as part of the issue is that the app turns off the buttons on the phone (not the actual screen) that normally let the user get to other apps, make phone calls, etc.

Most apps (on my HTC at any rate) work like this:

Some (not many) work like this:

The WoG solo app does this, however:

This is the workaround to let the user access other apps, the main screens, make calls, etc:

I am no expert on things Android, so am simply presenting the information in case it is of any use. At first it seemed like there was no way of getting out of your app; however swiping the screen top or bottom will reveal the bars long enough to use them. I don't know why this one seems to behave differently to others - the top menu can be done without, but losing the bottom menu/illuminated buttons is unusual.

If there is anything I can do to help with this project let me know. I would love to see it expanded to all of the existing planes. I can do a bit of graphics work, tho there are many here that are much better at it than I.
