"Gunlayer", that's an unusual term for the gunner/observer...not one which I had encountered before, at least not among airmen! I assume sort of migrated from the surface Navy....I guess it sounded more prestigious than "gunner"...
Yep, definitely a wet navy term that migrated in - mere gunners do all sorts of menial labour, but gunlayers are important people who get to point the gun....
