Thread: Windows 10

    Default Windows 10

Here in OZ this is a free upgrade. No idea of the benefits really but being free I have installed it on my main PC. My laptop loops on the initialise phase. I am thinking that it is probably a virus checker thing and that has to be turned off because when it had finished on my PC I got a pop up to get me to turn the virus checker back on!

Anyone else had any trouble installing it?

    Thumbs up

    Hi Gary!
I too received the free offer but my grandson who built my computer for me has suggested to wait a while until they get all the bugs out of it.
Would you mind letting me know how it preforms for you!

    Hey guys!
I installed windows 10 about a week or two ago. I did not experience what Baxter had with the security issue but here's the rundown on how it went for me. It did take a couple startups to get it running nice and smooth (which was expected), but after that I found that it runs very good, even better than windows 7 and 8 in my opinion. 10 is a lot more user friendly and I like the layout of it a lot. The only problem that I found was that when I got in an area of mediocre wifi connection in my house, it would automatically disconnect from the internet. I could go back into the wifi settings and reconnect again, and it would connect just fine, showing that I had more than enough signal strength to use that connection. It was kind of a toss up of how long I could last without having to reconnect again. Sometimes it would go two hours, other times less than a minute. Luckily microsoft implemented a new "feedback center" where all users of windows 10 can report problems they're having on a somewhat public forum, and microsoft will receive those reports and (hopefully) do something about it. I posted my problem and many others had the same issue so hopefully it's being worked on. In addition users can post their ideas to make windows 10 better, like new features and such. This gives me a suspicion that they might be using those ideas and creating a windows 10.1, kind of like what they did with 8.1 to fix the problems in 8, but that's just an idea that I've conjured up in my head, don't take my word for it. I've read of all sorts of different problems so it might vary by PC type if you have certain issues or not. For those of you who haven't installed it yet, if you really depend on using your PC to get daily tasks done, then I'd wait a little to get it. If you're like me and don't use your PC everyday and can deal with some possible issues, then go for it. I mean hey, someone had to try it first.

I installed 10 about a week ago, the install from 7 was smooth and event free. All of my programs and peripherals work fine. Took a bit of fiddling to get Cortana going but now she seems to work fine. By fiddling, I mean Windows 10 downloads as a pure US version so over here you need to download UK text and speech and make sure your location settings are also set for the UK. Other than that I can honestly say I love my laptop again. I particularly love the fast boot up. (26 secs to the initial screen on my old kit)

Installed just over a week ago, upgrade from Windows 8.1. Install went smoothly, but there was a problem with Outlook 2007, which stopped sending e-mails (resolved after I looked on-line and found others had the same problem and someone had posted a fix). Overall the laptop seems to run more smoothly and faster than it did under 8.1 - it's a 2 year old HP.

My laptop runs on 8.1 now as well and the free upgrade to W10 can be done any time on it they say. My question is: Did you guys had to install the programs you had been using again or they still work with the new system? What about the Windows Mail for example? Do you have the old mail or you just start anew with empty boxes?

Can only speak from my experience Andy - I run a lot of astrophotography software on the laptop as well as MS Office and genealogy apps - all work fine after the upgrade, and my mailbox etc. transferred across without a hitch. It was only the problem with sending from Outlook 2007 that caused issues - and that was sorted in an hour or so of web searching plus applying the fix. Also, have a 4X space game that I had just purchased that didn't work on 8.1, but does on 10.

I try not to offer unsolicited advice, but Windows 10 has some built in "information sharing" that is on by default. One this is that it shares your wireless with anyone in your contacts. So you have your friend over, and he/she has access to your wireless network by default. Not the end of the world, but important to know. Here is a link to turn some of the stuff off http://www.techrepublic.com/article/...tect-yourself/. There are reports that it is still sending MS some information even if you turn it all off. I'm a bit wary of it. Free software and services from a for profit company mean that you are the product, not the consumer. Yes, I'm looking at you Facebook.

Oh, and the end user's agreement gives MS the latitude to removed unlicensed software. That ought to be interesting.

Well I still cannot install it on my laptop so am not going to bother after reading these posts, it seems to be working fine with no issues on this desktop machine. My daughter has it on her laptop and I tried to install MS Office 2000 on it the other day and it would not let me install disk 2 which is the MS Publisher and extras. I think maybe my version of Office is too old now?

I have also been advised by my Tecchi to wait until a few issues are sorted out.

I have been using the "10" for a couple of days after upgrading from "8.1" and it works smoothly, although in the beginning some greater usage of RAM was noticed, causing a bit slower performance of the system. I turned off some (not necessary and invisible) memory consuming system options and now it runs properly.
