Default How To make gimbal altitude flight stands.

How To on making flight stands using Keith’s gimbal sets.

    What you will need.
Extending magnet tools, machine screws, Litko flight stands, Keith’s gimbal sets, glue, sand paper/emery cloth, drill press.

    Find suitable extending magnet tools.
Top one I use for Balloons, Bombers, Zeppelins.
Bottom I use for Scouts and Two Seaters.

Get machine screws that match what is used in the magnet tool. Get screws a bit longer so you have more to hold on with. I like the hex socket if available.

Using a drill press, drill into the bottom of the Litko base just far enough so the screw is flush and not protruding.

For those of you that don't want to cut the peg off of your ARES planes and I'm one of you, use two of the flight pegs. Sand one side of a ring magnet and glue it to the top of a flight peg. On the other, cut off the peg, drill an indent and glue a scratched ball bearing to the bottom of a flight peg. The peg with the ball bearing should be cut shorter. It helps with the heavier tandems. I now try to cut the pegs about half way or shorter.

Now thats a great idea, well executed. Ive never seen an extending magnetic tool before are they available everywhere? How do you set the hight in a game, with a tape measure 1 cm per flight peg say?

This idea uses a tool which should be available at B & Q or The Range or similar - I have one which is about the size of a pen and strong enough to pick up large screws. They may even be available at Halfords as automotive tools but as to current prices I'm not too sure - bought mine from Focus in 2009 and use it occasionally for model railway stuff.

    Fantastic idea

Hardware and automotive shops have these.

The larger one I use for Bombers Balloons and Zeppelins I found here.

The scout ones I first found at Sears in the US for $1.25. Then they ran out and came back a couple years later for $5!
I have found them cheaper at automotive shops.

Auto Zone in the US has them 'HERE'.

    Thanks for posting this, Peter.

I thought they worked great when we used them at HAVOC this year... time to do a little shopping!

One note when putting the recess in the base, do not try this with a hand drill. It will bite into the plastic and make a mess of it. Trust me, I tried. Use a drill press where you have a firm grip on the base or you can clamp it down.

Another very good alternative way to address this problem Peter.
I think that now we have covered just about everyone's preferences for mounting aircraft!
    Or have we?
Any further good ideas? Please post here chaps.

There are a few good ways to do this already here but I though adding how I did it wouldn't hurt.

Dead right. You can never have too many ideas Pete, and I know some of the chaps love those extending rods and the extra altitude options that they present.

    Excellent idea, Peter!
    No more REP, I'm afraid.

    Now... to find those tools...

I tend to use these mostly with the plane at the lower levels. If you start climbing to the upper end of the extender you can put some metal washers on the base to give it some weight and stability.

Thank you for a good "How to..." article, Peter.

May I ask whether your stands work o.k. with metal models, please?

I have not yet made any of my Reviresco or Red Eagle kits so I can't say for sure. I know they work with ARES planes (even 2 seaters) with no trouble. I don't know how much heavier an all metal plane is compared to ARES. I'll try to put one together this weekend and test it out and let you know.

Look on eBay, I found a supplier in the orient for $1.25 and ordered 30, they arrived in a week to the AZ!

What size are the magnets and ball bearings?

David, sorry I could not get to finish up the metal plane, life got in the way. I'll finish it up this coming weekend and give a full report. I'm putting together an SE5a from Reviresco. I feel it being a scout, it should work ok as it is not that much heavier that an ARES scout. We'll see soon.

Take a look in the Aerodrome store at Keith's gimbal set. I'd say the bearing is the width or slightly wider than a scout fuselage and the ring magnet a bit wider. I don't have any with me to measure till the weekend.

Thats a good price if the shipping is low. Good you got 30. I'd get all you want in one go as I have seen slight differences from my first purchase to more recent ones.
