Whew! There you have it - my first AAR

  2. #2

    Nicely done too!
Some great pictoral effects, a good introduction, and some well phrased commentary for the action.
Write many more like that and we'll be asking you how it's done!

    Cracking 1st AAR!
I don't usually REP AARs, there's too many of them to read them all, but for a first effort this is certainly deserving.
    Well done!

Great first outing Pete - you had more Jam than a vicar's tea party ! I take it that you have to pull a zero to clear a jam - that seems it could be a looong time without shooting !!

Yep. Although I may have to rethink that one! Never had it take that long before.
Love the way you phrase your reference to the ungodly amount of jams in this one.

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys.

I don't know how you all do it.
By the time the game was done and I recorded the Butcher's Tally it had been 6 hours

Then several more to put the AAR together. I must be doing something wrong.

And I still need to find out how to load multiple pictures in the forum. I loaded those one at a time.
    55 separate uploads ....

    Thumbs up

Really great first AAR Pete. Wonderful photos & the pics of the pilots added to the ambience.

I really think you made it much too difficult on everyone with your gun jam rule.
The official rules clear a Jam after playing 3 manoeuvre cards.

My thought was the enemy shouldn't know for sure when your gun will unjam.
Worked pretty well until this scenario!

Great AAR. Now why aren't you flying for the Eagles in the actual campaign. There are only two of us left and can use all the help we can. Says me being 4 scenarios behind!

The longest single mission I have flown so far took 12 hrs from setting up the table to packing the planes away, with a 30 minute break for food and ease the back ache.
then one evening to crop and resize the pictures, two evenings to write, and a fourth to upload and add pictures. I haven't found a quick way of loading pics, I do them one at a time.

I write my AAR in word whilst flicking through the pics to help me remember what happened. The ones I want to insert I annotated the post with its number in the correct position I want the pic. I cut and paste the word doc into a thread then add the pics in as usual in the correct place.

I'll give this method a try - many thanks!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I do hope to enter the fray but probably not until the fall because of work commitments.
I feel your pain in the backache dept, John

I think the method I used for loading my pics worked okay.
I used PowerPoint and then took screen shots saved as jpg that I numbered in sequence to keep it all straight.
If we don't have to build Rome in a day I can persevere.
One day to play, another to sort the pics, another to write the saga, and another to post it.
If that will meet the group schedule I can surely do that.

P.S. just want to get a feel for if my AAR was too long. I recorded pretty much every shot - should I just post the ones with some kind of result ?
I did have to leave out a few bits because the photos were not up to snuff, so I let the narrative handle those.

Its really up to you Pete!
I usually take at least one shot of each turn unless nothing really happens.
If its a furball then I might take a pic of every encounter.
I do try to keep the pics down to about 20 to 25 for what its worth.

Interestingly I write the AAR directly onto the Forum & insert the pics as I go.
Using this method you need to watch the time limit on uploading but I just post before the limit & then edit in Advanced & continue.
I always down size the pics in Paint & refer back to the folder to remind myself of what I am describing.

PowerPoint should allow you to save each slide as a JPEG, which might make things a little easier.

I take a picture of every manouver, plus close ups of any meaty bits.
I use MS picture to crop the pictures, then resize the to 640x480 so I don't use too much space on the server. I then save them into a folder numbering them in order.
I write the story in word, refering to the pictures and notes taken at the time, putting the picture number in the text.
When I am happy with the story, I cut and paste it into a new thread, then upload the pictures, removing the picture number as I go.
As for length, I stopped worrying about it when no one complained

Learn something every day! Just tried it and that automatically did what I did manually in about 3 seconds.

Glad to have been of service. You might also want to turn off the spell checker just before you export, so that you don't get the red underline. I was quite impressed that the forum did spell checking until I realised what it was.

Nice AAR Pete. A great start. I second Neil's plea for you to fly with us for the Eagles. We are badly outnumbered.

I think I do similar to Neil and John. I take shots of just about every card play, sometimes a few pics per card if the action is heavy. First I'll resize the photos and number them. I write up my AARs in word inserting the # where I want the associated photo. Then copy and paste the story and then replace the numbers with it's photo.
No quick way to do it I think. I usually fly the mission one night, resize photos the next, complete the write up and submit on another night. All for the glory of the Kaiser!

Excellent AAR Pete and love the way you threw in the German to start your scenario. I've had the same starting idea and am just waiting to get to that point in my Hunt for the Red Baron scenario to use it, had my sister in law do the translation, she was a German major at a nearby college.

How did you do the color on the pictures, was it a red lamp during shooting or do you go into the paint shop to change the photos color?

Once again excellent AAR for your first one.

    A lot simpler than that
Just poor lighting over my game board at the moment. The neon is flaky so only the single incandescent was on for that scenario.
    Thanks for the comments.
