Thread: Recharged Battery - of the 3" 20cwt AAA variety !!

Default Recharged Battery - of the 3" 20cwt AAA variety !!

A WW1 3" ack ack gun has been restored to working condition and emplaced at Dover Castle as they had them in Dover during the war to combat Zeppelin and bomber raiders !
Just been shown on the local news firing away crewed by volunteers in period costume. Apparently you can see it in action at the castle on Saturdays over the summer and it is the only working example in the world of the five known to exist.

Missed that Dave - thanks for posting.

Does this mean we should have AAA on Sunday if the latest Zep raid on Ashford crosses the coast at Dover??

Exactly how was AA shells set off during the Great War? Did they have timed fuses of some sort?

Exactly right. Radar-triggered proximity fuses didn't come about until the middle of WW2 (for the USA at least).

I would say that is almost obligatory now Brian.

Thank you for bring this to our attention Dave.
It should be well worth a visit just to see that, if you can get through the Lorry park.

Yeah, you got that right Rob - anyone going will need to check the Chunnel & Op Stack if they're going anywhere near Dover this Summer !

For those wingmen unfamiliar with Op Stack:
Operation Stack is a procedure used by Kent Police and the Port of Dover in England to park (or "stack") lorries on the M20 motorway in Kent when services across the English Channel, such as those through the Channel Tunnel or from the Port of Dover, are disrupted, for example by bad weather, industrial action, fire or derailments in the tunnel.....or when swarms of people are trying to access the UK apparently.
(Swarm definition: An aggregation of persons or animals, especially when in turmoil or moving in mass - yeah, surprise ! Seems DC got it right for once !)
