Default OTT Early Doors scenario 15: 31st March 1917: Beware the Hun in the sun!

Early Doors Mission 15: March 1917. ‘Beware the Hun in the Sun’.

    14th March

    • German forces withdraw from the Somme sector to the Hindenburg Line

    31st March

    • The Emperor of Austria makes secret proposal, conveyed in a letter to prince Sixte of Bourbon, to the French President (M. Poincaré) to open conversations with a view to peace (see April 11th, 1918).

With the German forces withdrawing to the Hindenburg line the Emperor of Austria had decided that they had had enough of the war and wanted to start peace negotiations with the Entente. After weeks of talks it was agreed that a representative of the Austrian Emperor, carrying the secret dispatch, would be picked up by a Caproni and flown to France. Bad weather forced the Caproni crew to change their original flight plan and instead headed further north than they intended. The Caproni was escorted by 3 Spad VII’s as they crossed the Alps.

However 4 Albatros DIII’s on patrol have spotted the bomber and its escort and are swooping in for the attack.
Set up: 2 mats joined by SHORT edge. 4 randomly placed cloud formations (not too large) 2 on each mat.

Right hand edge is German territory Left hand edge is Entente territory.

Entente Player/AI set up: 1 Caproni bomber 1.5 rulers in from middle of right hand edge. Either side 1 Entente scout. 3rd Spad (roll 1d6) either to front (odds) or rear (evens).

Mission: To exit the left hand edge of the playing area.

Central Powers Player/AI set up: 4 Albatros DIII scouts enter on right hand mat edge. Roll1d6:

1-2 Enter in top right corner
3-4 Enter directly behind Entente aircraft
5-6 Enter in bottom right corner

Mission: Shoot down the Caproni bomber.

    Victory Points:
Shooting down a CP scout 1 point.
Shooting down an Entente scout 2 points
Shooting down the Caproni 5 points.
Caproni exits left hand edge 5 points

    Special Rules:

    1. If any Cp aircraft can draw an imaginary line from the right mat edge, through its rear base edge, out of its front edge and to the left mat edge with any Entente aircraft within its gun arc then the CP aircraft can add +1 to firing at short and long range.

Hence Beware the Hun in the Sun. Entente aircraft caught this way can only fire at short range.

Looks like it will be a real furball Neil - just need to check the number of SPAD VII's in the tray (may well end up flying XIII's as VII's for one). Note to self - still have to fly #14 as well

Yes indeed I'm looking forward to this one, and a chance to use my Caproni at last.
    Nice one Neil.

    Thumbs up

Without a Caproni can I please sub a H-P 0/400 & will I need to make any adjustments to its stats to be fair.
Not sure what the Caproni uses for manoeuvre deck.
Also only have 1 Alb D.III but can sub some D V's or Pfalz's!

This promises to be a great set too Neil!

Caproni CA 3 XD deck, 25 damage points, climb rate of 6, ceiling 11, you have B firing rear and forward gunners, and 2 pilots if I recall.

Can't wait to get to 14 so I can do 15!

Play it with the experimental 0/400 Barry just amend the escort to compensate.

HP 0/400: XA Deck 34 Damage, Alt 9 (10 in stats doc), Climb rate 8 in FotG.

Caproni: XD deck, 25 damage points, climb rate of 6, ceiling 11

reduce the escorts to 2 not 3 Barry. (loose the rear one)

Had a go at this one 'as per' except I forgot the Special rule Not that it would have made a huge difference as it turned out but I think I will replay it on a 6x4 so the Huns can give the Caproni a real run for its money - they need time to pummel it !

    Question One more Query!

    G'day Neil!

Just one more query for Neil & Dave.

Should the Bulldogs supply the crew for the Bomber or is it presumed they come from another Squadron?

I crewed mine Baz but then my Caproni has... British roundels
I would suggest for all that in the normal scheme of things the crew could be an unknown French one or a mixed entente crew. You could have the option then of providing a co-pilot or a gunner ? If you crewed it fully and it goes down you stand to lose all your two-seat crews !
As you're using a HP Baz have an unknown Brit bomber crew but feel free to sub in a co-pilot or gunner from your roster if you wish to weave that into your story.
    Bon Chance

My thoughts were that the crew were not part of your roster only the scouts.

This looks like one I might try just to get used to using the multi-engine aircraft.

Having played this a few times now my top tip is to bring the Huns on line abreast (which I didn't do in my first game) and if you do move it up to a bigger table still start the Huns from the same distance as you would on the smaller table (ie about 45cm or 18" from the centre of the baseline) or you may not get on him at all !

    Thanks Dave & Neil!
I will crew the H-P with an unknown crew from a Bomber Squadron & can weave that into my story.
Hope to play it end of next week. Too much happening in real life at the moment!

Too late for the Huns in my scenario Neil!
Whilst I did have them in a line abreast behind von Bukard the Kette leader it did not help them much.

Too late for me to Neil, although I did start the Capi from the far right edge as there were no huns directly behind it, so it has to run the full 2 mats.

Neil - never played with clouds before - what are the rules?

Oh, and can the Entente flyers get the "in the sun" advantage in the unlikely event they get behind the Eagles

  25. #25

Basically Brian, if you are behind a cloud, the enemy on the other side can't see you. If your center peg is inside the cloud base, you can't shoot or be shot at.
Personally. If I'm in a cloud longer than my three turn cards, I pick random moves until I emerge to simulate orientation problems. That is just a personal quirk.

Cheers Rob & Neil - I'm going to fly this tomorrow (I am hoping I might have a bit more luck than the last one, but this looks a bit dicey)
