It's been on my Wish List for a while. Probably get it this winter.
Never seen it Eric, but now you chaps have drawn my attention to it I must have a closer look.
Thanks.
Rob.
"Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death."
I've seen it. I think it is very good. Some of the scenes at the front are brutal, I think very realistic, and you get some views from back home too.
I've seen it a while back, and it's a pretty good movie. Go ahead and watch it.
Never heard of this film before so I too will be popping it on my wishist ... Looks and sounds good anyway so thanks again for the pointer
My interest has been piqued. Will definitely look into it.
"I love the smell of Cosmoline in the morning -- it smells like... dead Commies."
The trailer looks a little bit elevated and the Finish troops look like Germans.
I can recommend this one:
Generation War
Made in Germany.
Voilŕ le soleil d'Austerlitz!
I've had this movie for a few years (on VHS) so that tells you how long. A very good movie. The copy I have is in Finnish but I don't mind subtitles. I either have to pull out the VHS machine or get a DVD copy to watch it again.
LOVED Generation War, Sven! What a wonderful pastiche of characters and situations. The brother who's the officer is very sympatisch, I thought...
Good recommendation for all here.
I saw The Winter War a while back - it is very realistic and gritty in spots, and seems to do a nice job of illustrating the Finnish experience against the Soviets in that conflict.
All the best,
Matt
Sven, thanks for posting that. That is another one I looked at on amazon.
“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” ― Plato
Bought the DVD a few years ago. Enjoyed the film.
Agree with Teaticket. Brutal battle scenes, but not gratuitous.
Only hiccup are some of the subtitles. The DVD is actually a Korean release.
Some of the translations aren't done very well.
All in all I recommend the film.
From Amazon.com:
Language: German
Subtitles: English
Voilŕ le soleil d'Austerlitz!
Talvisota...of course I have seen it some 15 years ago. A worth seeing film on a war unknown to popular audience. [Kind of flashback... uhm...uhm...].
Even own a copy and must dig it out.
"We do not stop playing when we get old, but we get old when we stop playing."
Besides seeing this movie I have read a book about the Winter War. The Russians were so ill prepared or thought they would just walk over the Finns. A few things I remember were that the Finns would shoot Russian soldiers out of sympathy due to the frostbite they had. Another was a Russian battalion getting ready to attack a Finn platoon when atry started falling on the Russians. Turns out it was Russian atry because it was called into the wrong area.
