Thread: New to WoW/WoG

    Default New to WoW/WoG

    Hi guys,

Wanted to post in the Dutch wing but it's non existent and seeing that US aircraft have always interested me most I figured I mightaswell post here.

Anyways, I am looking to buying WoW or WoG (WW2) but I am unsure if I want to make such a large investment.

I was thinking of buying WoW Fire from the sky. This way it's relatively cheap to start and see if I like the game.
Can anyone tell me if Fire from the sky is compatible with any of the WoG expansion aircraft? Or if I want to buy those I need the WoG starter set?
Also, does the card version (Fire from the sky) also work with the different altitude system for the aircraft?

Hope you guys can give me some info.

    Regards,

    Daan

Hi Daan, not from US, but I know the answer. Yes, Fire from the Sky is OK with new WoG stuff. Some rule details changed, but WGS rules are free for download, so you can check it personaly.
By the way, this box will be under the bed soon, because if you will (or even play) a game with minis, there is only one way
Daan, welcome here, you are just entering an awesome world of air history!

Thanks Dan-Sam for the quick reply!

What do you mean ''only one way to play''. Are you hinting that the only fun way to play is with the minis?
I should guess it is since it simply looks awesome that way

    Regards,
    Daan

Welcome to the Forum, Daan! Hopefully you'll find some other countrymen close by and a Dutch Wing will be in the offing. This is a great place to wander around and get involved.

My experience is with the WW1 stuff (so far), but the WoW First World War materials ARE compatible with the WoG First World War stuff - as long as you're getting WW2 planes and supplements, I don't think there would be any difficulties. Anything you MIGHT find that is confusing can be cleared up here on the Forum - in fact, it probably already HAS been straightened out in some thread here!

    All the best,
    Matt

In 2006 I was thinking about buying Famous Aces (WWI) for my scout unit, but I did not do it. In 2009 I saw a Deluxe set with 4 minis and...I was lost. I was only WWII fan before that moment, but game showed me a beauty of WWI too.
Fire from the Sky is a good box for test of game mechanics. There are even bombers, so you can try moving and all other options of the game. Good choice for the start If you would like the game, you can buy some minis. It is great that with FftS that you do not need RAP, because you will have damage tokens and target cards from FftS. As I say: nice and cheap "game opener", but if you would like the game, you (probably) would have more and more (sorry for grammar)

Thanks Matt for the warm welcome
Dan-Sam, you paint a pretty clear picture. I'll go for Ffts and then expand from there. Next to being a pilot myself I am a huge WWII aviation enthusiast so I can almost justify buying the models already just for display purposes but I would still feel kind of stupid if I didn't enjoy the game mechanics.

    Thanks for the replies guys!

Blackronin, thats awesome! I went to a gameshop today in Rotterdam to inquire about WoW/G but he said not many people play in NL. Like you are reading above I am new to this and don't even know yet how much I am going to enjoy it. But I will definitely shoot you a PM if I get hooked and am in the neighbourhood

Welcome to the Aerodrome Daan from across the North Sea. Around a month ago there was discussion as to how there is no Dutch Wing at present and I think one will be created soon. There are definitely other Aerodrome members from Holland and Reporting for Duty is by far the best way of meeting them.

Playing WGS (I am a WGS fan although I play WGF on occasions) with Minis is by far the best way to enjoy the game in my opinion. I have played Wings of War with cards only and prefer to play with Minis - the gameplay is just as good but there is not all that much to look at. In comparison with a Miniature you feel more as if you are in control of an aircraft because you can actually see it. You feel a sense of attachment and a far greater sense of responsibility towards playing with a Miniature than you do towards playing with a card.

In terms of what are currently available look at AA which is linked directly to here for an excellent range at good prices. Aerodrome Accessories ship internationally and if you have a question Keith always returns with a friendly and informative answer.

Excellent! I already met another member from Holland. Guus! (Aardvark1430)
It would be very nice to meet you and if you want to try the game, just say so.

Hi Daan and welcome to the Drome.
Just to make things clear and apologies if you already know this.
Originally WW2 came in a box set WoW Dawn of War, this was a card game and the box set came with cards for Spitfire MK 1, Me109, Hurricane, Zero and another few aircraft that escape me for now.
Minis were then introduced, once you play with the minis it will be hard to go back to cards, in my humble opinion anyway.
Fire from the Sky was the first Boxed Supplement for the game and introduced a couple of two seaters, the Stuka and Dauntless and Val for example.
Wings of war went out and Wings of Glory replaced it.
This time though only as a mini game, the rules pack has all the chits and rules that you need but no cards for aircraft.
In the original game altitude was used using altitude chits that game in the box sets.
So if you are looking for a card game look for Dawn of War box set if you want Spitfires and Me109 and Zero's.
In the files I'm pretty sure there is a listing of each box set so you can see what was available.
    Hope this helps

This is all good info guys, what a nice community
Just to get 1 thing clear that I think I have miss understood. Fire from the sky is not a standalone version but it's a supplement? I was under the impression it was standalone and therefore looked much more appealing.

It is standalone - complete card version

Apologies if I was not clear. Yes it is a stand alone game with cards.
But it was the first supplement to the main game Dawn of War, that introduced two seaters to the game not just single seater fighters as in Dawn of War

G'day Daan & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the pilots who fly in N.S.W. down in Australia.

May I suggest you "Report for Duty" down in the bottom section rather than the US section.
More folk in Europe will see it there.

I am sure you will love the game & the Minis make it just so much more enjoyable!

Hello Daan and Welcome from Western Kentucky. I started with the WWI boxed sets and soon advanced to Minis. I now have over 80 WWI minis and over 50 WWII minis, and there are people on here who have far more than I.
All of the Nexus produced merchandise and Ares merchandise are compatible.
Once you dive in and take the plunge with minis you won't look back.
Have fun and here's to many safe flights.

On behalf of the Squadrons based here in Dear old Blighty, welcome to the Drome Daan.
For many years from before the last war my Great Aunt has lived in Den Haag so I know Zuid Holland quite well for a foreigner. it is a beautiful part of Europe even if it lacks a few mountains. It makes up for that in so many other ways.
It is high time a Dutch Wing was established. We just need to get a few more regular posters first. Do get in touch with Blackronin (Joaquim) in Haarlem.
    Fly safe.

    Hi guys,

I don't even have the game yet but when I do and it's as awesome as it seems then a Dutch wing would sound good.

I heard someone say single player? Would that also be possible some sort of co-op? My girlfriend isn't really into games where we kill eachother but together shoot down some sort of ''virtual'' enemy is something she loves

  29. #29

Yes, there are rules for singleplayer. Or you can join some skype game (one is running today). Or there is an iApplication (no experience with it).

If you can't find the game, see here. I'm selling one unopened copy of Fire in the Sky.

And for the solo rules, see here.
And it's amazing playing co-op. More even with your girlfriend.

Daan, one thing you will discover about Wings of War and Wings of Glory is how many Wives Spouses (Partners) and in some cases families get involved with playing the game. There is a way of you playing on the same side as your Girlfriend and shooting down a third target ... The Wife and I play such games frequently in which we go hunting for drone targets from the opposite side to the one we are on. These drone targets are often either controlled by me as a 'secondary' aircraft or just set up to maintain a straight and level course across the gaming mat.

The social side of this Wargame is one of the best I have ever known. Plenty of fun to be had surrounding it (banter) which creates a pleasant atmosphere during sessions and games ... One particularly encouraging thing I find about the Aerodrome is that if you ever have a question it is never treated or regarded as a 'silly' question. Particularly from a new or learner player. I hope you are settling in here fine and you have fun learning the game

Yeah I've noticed how nice the community here is. Usually when you ask something anywhere on the internet there is a long list of verbal abuse you have to filter through until you get your answers.

Not here. Men and women at this establishment are gentlemen and ladies. And that's what will bring here again and again.

Definitely NOT the place for this - the Aerodrome Moderators should anything like this ever occur would deal with the matter swiftly! I know what you mean though from PC Wargame forums with War Thunder being the biggest offender by far for abuse and general stupidity in response to questions from inexperienced players. I think Warbirds 2013 had the best PC Wargame forums IMHO but this still was allowed to happen now and again. Which is wrong.

Most of the people who respond to learner players like that are just idiots themselves - what a pity they have to go and advertise the fact! I have yet to come across one such person on the Aerodrome: The appearance and general aura of the site does not attract this sort of conduct and as mentioned the Moderators would not tolerate it ...

    Hey guys,

I received Fire from the sky today from Blackronin or ''Quim'' as our polish friend calls him . I already started playing with my fiancée. She doesn't really like games where we have to shoot at eachother but she loves games where we shoot at others together so we quickly adopted Blackronin's solo rules! Atleast, a simplified version of it since we are both just starting out. Man there are so much rules to this game! Can't wait to slowly work through all of them.
We are currently in the process to switching apartments so all the money we have is going to be reserved for any unexpected costs but when things level out I definitely want to invest in miniatures.
Now I understand there are maneuver packs with cards that aren't in the base game. If I buy miniatures, do these have their own maneuver cards? If so, do they also have the special maneuver cards with them?

On a side note, anyone (I am looking at Blackronin here) know which is the cheapest miniature supplier if you are living in the Netherlands?

  48. #48

    Default

If you buy the ARES planes they come with the maneuver deck specific for that plane. If you buy planes not from ARES, like Shapeways, you will have to get cards elsewhere (the maneuver card sets) or make your own.

My wife and I love playing together vs the solo system. She also loves shooting me down! Get the miniatures when you can as they add so much to the visual appeal of the game that is priceless.

I am happy that you got it already. It was kind of hard to me to bike all the way down to the post office with a sore ankle. But it was worthy.
There are two decks with different planes and other maneuver decks: The Last Biplanes and Revolution in the Sky.
All the planes from Ares have the plane card and correspondent maneuver deck.
I couldn't find planes in the Netherlands, at least at a decent price. But buy them here at the Aerodrome. They're cheap and Keith is the best seller you could ask for:

    http://www.aerodromeaccessories.com/

Any question about the solo rules, feel free to ask.

PS. And you can call me Quim anytime you want to.
