    Question Card protection

    Hey guys,

just getting into the game. Normally I purchase card protector sleeves for any games that have cards, but I am finding that the sleeves are making it a little tricky to do the maneuvers accurately and to stack the damage cards against the console.

What do you guys find, do the cards tend to wear out pretty quick? Do you use card sleeves or is card wear and tear not really a problem?

    Thanks.

    Cheers.

    G'day Shawn!
I have been playing often at both our games club & with the Solo campaigns & have had no problem with card wear.
    I have never considered sleeves.

If you are going to use them in a club/con environment you may want to protect them from sticky fingers but mine are mostly home use so I've found there's no wear at all & my visitors keep their paws clean !

I have sleeved all my cards, mainly as I use them at shows/ cons.
Mainly against smaller members of the public with sticky and chocolate fingers, you would be surprised how many, plus the spilt drink.
Disadvantage is the decks expand to almost double if using fantasy flight sleeves, not so much with thinner ones but still more than without.
Unfortunately no way around that, so it's a case of choice, personally I prefer the protection.
    Just in case

Thanks all, I appreciate the varied views. Just finished playing a game with them off and it was a bit easier, but I can see what you mean about the sticky fingers. We quite often have some chips (crisps) while gaming so that could be an issue. I hadn't thought of that. I'll play a few more games some on some off and make a call.

Does anyone have custom cut KR cases and knows if they fit the cards with sleeves on?

Sleeved cards DO fit in the KR tray card cut-outs - they do require some pressure to push 'em in, but they are then held securely.

As Tim already said, yes sleeved cars fit standard KR trays, I use KR for most of my collection.
fiG do trays also and these are good but made of a more rigid foam so I found it tended to make the corners curl, the ZR is a bit more flexible and the sleeved cards fit nice and snuggly

I sleeved all my damage cards (with better quality, sturdier sleeves) and many of the decks (with penny ones).
Since I play with kids and they "tend to bend" the cards in the heat of battle, drop them, eat snacks - it was necessary and pays off.

So far all I've 'sleeved' have been my airplane cards and my 'target' and 'bomb' cards. I will probably do it to my damage cards one day, too. But as others above have mentioned, I only play at home with my stuff. Were I to take my equipment to a con or run games at a local store, I think I would probably want the protection from food and drink that others have mentioned...

Speaking of sleeves, does anyone have sleeves for bomber airplane cards and management cards? I haven't gotten around to looking and need those, too.

    All the best,
    Matt

Hard and fast rule everywhere, home and conventions (if I'm providing the game components):

In other words, clean hands. I do offer the option of refreshment breaks. Also, Skype games mean only I touch my stuff.

But, I have seen sleeves used at Enfilade, especially for mixed Damage decks, and for keeping maneuver decks separated (four people flying the same type of plane in close proximity). I like the ease of quickly packing up the game, with all the deck sleeves clearly delineated. Size increase and slipperiness are issues, as I've found with my Solo decks (Second Epiphany - The Universal Diceless Solo Deck).

Another practical use of sleeves, you can mark individual decks so if a deck gets mixed they are easy to identify.
I use 8mm coloured dots, other use smaller, but at cons and when multiple decks are used they really help to make sure decks are easy to keep separate.

Yup, I stole this idea off Chris to use on my multiple decks, and it really works well!

I just use permanent different colour markers and make signs right on the cards, regardless of sleeves (A, S, AS. A1 an so on). Last time I played with kids at school using 6 P decks marked like that and not a single card got lost or mixed up.

Thanks guys! The marking of individual decks is particularly pertinent to me as even though I am an at home player I will probably be the one that buys the planes and then my friends will come around to play - provides my fix for playing something non 40K and means they don't have to fork out to play it, so win-win.

I was planning to pick a couple of different planes and then get around 2/3 of a single type. This would allow us to play "squadron" battles. So there would be several of the same maneuver decks and marking them would be useful.

i sleeve all my maneuver cards and damage cards after seeing some significant wear on the more desirable a/c. i work at a games store so i tend to do alot of demo games (thought not so much lately it seems). so far ive acquired 3 different varieties of sleeves; swan thin, swan thick, and ultra pro thick. unfortunateley i can no longer get the swan thin. i use the thin for wgs a/c the swan thick for wgs and ultra pro for damage cards since theyre the thickest (it makes my double a deck rather unwieldy but at least theyre protected.

When my Kickstarter planes finally arrive, I'll sleeve the cards with cheap but robust Swan Sleeves: http://www.smiling-monster.com/Karte...emium::51.html
