Default Wings of Glory goes to school: Poland 2015.

This is the project I have been fruitlessly trying to complete in recent years. And finally it has been done today.
Some weekes ago my daughter's history teacher asked her to prepare a lesson for other pupils (10 years old kids) in her class if she wanted to get a higher mark.
Parents were allowed to cooperate, so ... you know...I grabbed the chance.
As it is more or less 100 years anniversary of airwarfare, we (my Michelle and me) decided Great War in the air is a second to none chance to tell the kids what it all was about and introduce them to the Game. The teacher was over the moon when heard we are going to merge a lecture with a game!

Nonethless to say, this is a great WOG week for me, for returning from Prague last Sunday meant the start of the lesson project. Writing, printing, teaching my young pilot what and how to say - a nice time .

During two hours of lessons time I arranged the classroom, set up the 1915 fighter clash (3 boys playing the French team, 3 girls fighting for the Kaiser) - and we started!
Michelle, her teacher and me told the kids how the airwar in the Great War started...

    The fight got really intense...
Below you can see the best pilot of the French, scoring just one kill, but flying as a devil.

I am sorry the last picture got curved (do not know why!). There we can see Adam, the best flyer with his prize!

BTW - The girls WON 2:1 in kills...

Outstanding job. Good for you trying to get the younger folks involved in history. I watch a segment on a show where they ask questions. Such questions as who is G. Washington, A Lincoln. Most have no idea. Who did we fight in WWII? Who won the ACW? The people they ask are college students and they have no clue. Oh one answer was that the French won the ACW.

That's how you do it... much like propaganda, you wrap your information "payload" in an entertaining "package" for delivery.

I plan much the same once I break back into academia, but I'll be working with college students myself.

Great job, really! Fun and learning, a great combination indeed. But you need a great barman to properly mix a cocktail with such delicate ingredients, so... Congratulations to Michelle and you!

    Great project, Andrzej.

The kids had no pure history lessons at the moment I think (if the school system is similar to the German school system), so this could be an entry in former Polands history.

Excellent effort Andy. At the very least it might wean them off Warhammer

    You are all right, chaps.
@Andrea: indeed. The youngsters do not recognize the two periods of history (WWI and WWII), so the teacher and me had to explain the differences between notions like "The Germans" - "Hitler" and so on; you know what I mean. We both stressed the way of The Knights of the Skies, shooting at planes, not the pilots, galantry on the ground and the treatment of downed pilots. They were all ears!
The kids had many questions. Some touched excellent points; one of the boys asked: "But how could they shoot through the propeller blades, Sir?" Of coursed it triggered the whole story about Saulnier, Garros and Fokker...
@Steve: These kids do not know WH at all yet, but some of them do play computer games; hopefully I know some of them personally and intoxicated them and their parents with boardgaming. So there is a hope for them....

You can not imagine how involved they got in the game! They felt like being personally hit ("Ouch! That hurts!"). To my surprise the girls turned out to be much better in orientation, planning flight paths and all. To my despair I saw tears in one of the boy's eyes when got in a crossfire and drew 4 cards in one turn (got 5 pts of damage together out of 10).

Their last question was: "When will we play again, Sir?"

    Covers all the bases Andy.
The only time our Head showed any interest in the school War games club was when we were having an Ofsted inspection. Then he wanted us high profile to show all the things you did, plus the fact that we ran the after school club and took kids to shows and did demonstration games with them there.
What children get the most out of a lesson is hands on first person experience.
When Eileen and I take our re enactment lessons to schools we always get most interest from the handling of the artifacts, and that's only from the teachers.
Well done that man and lass.

This is a wonderful thing you've done here with your daughter - what a great way to teach kids about events in the past. They will remember this for a LONG time (which is what education is all about, after all...)

    Well done, Andy!

    All the best,
    Matt

Andy have to extend you play to WWII to show how the Poles fought on in Britain. Quite a few Polish squadrons there.

You are all right, chaps. It was a complete new experience for the kids and they loved it. They asked me where to buy the game, how much does it cost and - when one of the boys heard about the SoG said the Kid's Day was coming and presents..., I had to write the address of the online shop where to buy such games....
I will have to introduce them to WGS and BoB especially next time.

Battle of Britain with Polish pilots in Spitfires will be amazingly rewarding for them. History teaching and gaming. Powerful combination.
