Thread: Home Defense BE2C colors?

  1. #1

    Default Home Defense BE2C colors?

Ok all you wizened crew, I am sure this has been asked before, but now I care. Home Defense I think it is Squadron 77 had aircraft designated to defend the Island from Zeppelins and other bad things in the night. I am aware of altered insignias, no white in the roundel, but what of aircraft color? I am equipping a pair of BE2C's with "Strange" mounts for duty and was wondering if the colors were PC10, green, natural linen or even maybe a blue? My Russian source indicates blue . . . any definitive colors or am I getting to choose my own path?

My only source is Rogers' "British Aviation Squadron Markings of World War 1"

It lists 77 Squadron as defending Edinburgh and Central Scotland with BE2c and e models.

No squadron marking is known, planes carrying unspecified individual markings.

The only colours mentioned are wheel covers, being "most likely red, white, and blue"

Also listed are 76 Squadron, covering Yorkshire; 75 Squadron covering Bedfordshire; 78 Squadron covering the approaches to London.
All used BE2c and BE2e, BE12 and BE12b (except 78, which does not have BE2c listed).
None of these squadrons have any colours listed for them.

'Aircraft of World War 1' by Jack Herris and Bob Pearson (published by Amber) has a picture of a 38 Squadron BE.2C single-seat Night Fighter September 1916 (page 63) with a dark brown nose and wheels, lighter brown cockpit surround a cream rear fuselage, underwings and undercarriage legs. It has the normal roundel and tail striping, including the white pieces.

It also has a picture of a BE.12B single-seat Night Fighter (Squadron unknown) 1918. It is dark brown all over. The roundel has no white. Instead there is a large red circle in the centre. The tail has a dark brown vertical stripe where the white stripe would have been. Other late war night fighters depicted in the book were also mainly dark brown.

    I do like these Dave.
Might even get me to paint another BE myself.

Fantastic. Now I know what to do with my last two BE2cs. The one I bought with rockets will fit the bill nicely.

Info via the Aerodrome historical forum:
60 Sqd painted their BE's black & had a small white skull & crossbones on the side of the fuselage.

    Lovely BE2s!

I'd like to do a black nightfighter, but all mine are earmarked for the Western Front.
