Cool Derby weekend Wings of Glory style

In honor of the Ky Derby that will be ran this weekend, I am going to have my own derby, of sorts. I am going to take my 14 different WWII planes and line them up and race them 5ft across the floor and back, for a total distance of 10ft.

    Rules of engagement:
    1) all planes must start with front of bases even at start line
    2) all planes are to travel 5ft, turn around and go back to the finish line, the front of the base must either end a move on the 5ft mark or pass it to be able to turn around
2A) special rule: all planes can Immelmŕn.
    3) no ramming other planes
    4) there will be 2 heat races with the first 3 in each heat advancing
    5) all distances will be reported as miles, example, 50 miles out, 50 miles back, total 100 miles
    6) planes will be placed in heats by random draw
    7) starting position will be by random draw

The line ups for the Derby are:
    Heat #1
    1) Dewoitine flown by Thollon
    2) B-25 flown by Doolittle
    3) FW-190 flown by Gotz
    4) A6M2 Zero flown by Sakai
    5) Wildcat flown by Galer
    6) Spitfire Mk IX flown by Skalski
    7) Yak-1 flown by Litvjak

    Heat #2
    1) Memphis Belle
    2) P-40 Warhawk flown by Lott
    3) Ki-61 flown by Ichikawa
    4) Hurricane flown by Kuznetsov
    5)P-51 Mustang flown by Ellington
    6) Beaufighter flown by Davoud
    7) BF-109 flown by Galland

The betting windows are open Ladies and Gentlemen and Lads and Lasses.
Step up and make your pick for the winner of each heat. The finals will take place shortly after the winners of both heats are posted, inspected, and certified that no one cheated. ;-) :-)
    Have fun

Yep that would be a pretty safe bet!

    Hello!

    Excellent idea, Dale, very sporting!

Very inclusive field too, bombers and fighters.

    No handicaps I suppose?

Being an Bluegrass gent I'll place my bets across the board.

That typed, whilst the FW-190 is a large engine strapped on to a minimal airframe, she's a Cavalry Hoss (Gor love 'em) not so much a Racing Horse, but she'll bring her attributes to the air show.

Here are my crystal balls-gazing to previse the possible future.

    The First Race

Tip o' the hat to the Spitfire IX, bravo to the Dewoitine still....

First Heat Winner: the Fw-190(D-13), Goetz won't have goad the "Shrike" for the win.

    The Second Race

Snappy bow to the Ki-61, honorable mention to the Hurricane, yet....

Second Heat Winner: the P-51(D), Ellington will 'charge' the field in his red-tail Mustang, ye-haawww!

Now what about a Mint Julep with deux bourbon, it's traditional.

Do they get to shoot at each other? That would make the races *much* more interesting. >;)

    Chris,

    That is funny.

It was to be part of my follow-up question about handicapping. Good man!

    Best,
    Mel

I had thought about letting them shoot at each other but, the only ones that would be able to shoot early and often would be the bombers. The fighters would have to "jockey" for position to be able to get off a shot.

Just wait I am working on the play by play with announcers, reporters, and sponsors. It should be fun. Real names were used but changed to protect the innocent.

The idea came about after reading a post the other day where a guy did a bombing run with Zeros defending the target. The guy made the statement that the Zeros had a problem keeping up with the bomber. This got me wondering just how fast the Memphis Belle and A Bit O' Lace really, seeing as how I've more or less just received mine and have yet to do more than read the material that came with them and looked them up and read about them on the 'net.

    Dale,

I "bet", hands down, your Dashin' Derby will be one for the books.

    It'll be a blast!

Best to you fellow flier and tip o' the hat for your creativity.

    Regards,
    Mel

I love the Derby, we grew up in KY, leaving to go to college. My sister is having her annual Derby Day party in Silver Spring, MD. Only about 100 people expected.

    Love this idea!

This is a fantastic idea - please publish the results.

Always thought about air racing / a Derby like this as a 'stick and rudder' session ... But now you have beaten me to it I am seriously thinking about my next Solitaire session turning into Reno / the Red Bull Air Races complete with obstacles which have to be flown through. But only using applicable manoeuvring decks - no swapping. The Gloster Gladiators and Fiat Cr42s if we have them by then are going to just LOVE this one!!! The faster P-51Ds and Spitfire Mk IXs may not so ...

Anyway here are my bets ...

The line ups for the Derby are:
    Heat #1

    2) B-25 flown by Doolittle - Third place
    3) FW-190 flown by Gotz - Second place
    6) Spitfire Mk IX flown by Skalski - First place

    Heat #2

    1) Memphis Belle - Second place
5)P-51 Mustang flown by Ellington - First place
    6) Beaufighter flown by Davoud - Third place

The line up for the KY WoG Derby is as follows:
    1) Franz Götz FW190
    2) Spurgeon Ellington P-51 Mustang
    3) Stanislaw Skalski Spitfire Mk IX
    4) Chuichi Ichikawa Ki-61
    5) Lydia Litvjak Yak-1
    6) Adolph Galland BF 109
    7) David Hill P-40 Warhawk

The betting window is now open. Bet often and bet heavy folks. The results will be posted, hopefully, by Monday.

Getting ready to post the big race.
Did not even think about Ken Squier, Kris Economaci, or even Barney Hall as my broadcasters. And a shout out to the Godfather of Motorsport Dave Moody and Sirius Speedway.

Oh, yes -- had almost forgotten MRN (I'm old enough to remember when that was the only way to get racing coverage some weekends).

And not remembering Squier, Economaki, [Sir] Jackie Stewart, Brock Yates, Steve Evans, and others is forgivable if one is sufficiently young to not remember when only the big-name races got TV coverage.... >;)

Of those names the only one I'm not familiar with is Steve Evans. And I am old enough the remember the rest and old enough to remember Jackie Stewart the racecar driver..

Many, many moons ago, when cable was first becoming widespread, The Nashville Network had a show titled _American Sports Cavalcade_ which featured various forms of auto racing; the TV talent were Brock Yates and Steve Evans. There's some stuff on YouTube, but it's scattered all over.
