They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

    Thank you so much Rob!
Attached is a pic of my eldest daughter Jennifer-Anne standing on the beach at Anzac Cove yesterday holding a picture of my Dad, Ernest Henry Hickson who One Hundred Years ago landed in the second wave under machine gun fire, survived & then fought all through the final years on the Western Front, was wounded twice but survived & lived until he was 76.

So bad that most of this generation have no idea of what you are talking about or what they and others have done.

During my years in the Canadian Legion, I always found this prayer/testimonial very moving, particularly the second verse.

    Thanks, Rob.

    All the best,

While living in Australia I always remember being told the story of Simpson and his Donkey at Galipoli every Anzac Day.
I still remember the story some fifty years later, a great story of courage and heroism and putting others before ones self.
May he and all the Veterans of terrible conflicts be remembered.

It's a good time to remember the heroism and sacrifice of the troops as opposed to the lunacy of the high command - Mr. Churchill - not your finest hour...

At least he resigned and went and fought on the Western front. So should have all the war cabinet IMHO.

Here's to Jen, Ernest Henry Hickson & the thousands who crossed that beach a hundred years ago - we will remember them.

Our eternal memory is what we all owe them Thanks Rob for starting this thread and Barry for the story of your dad. He was a lucky man, but I can not imagine the suffering of others he witnessed.
    Long live ANZAC heroes.
Did you know guys that during that landing Australian and New Zealand troops fought under their national flags for the first time in history?
