To summarize: Britain is restoring a monitor, M. 33, as part of an exhibition on the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. The claim is htat M. 33 is only one of three surviving warships from the First World War (in Britain, one assumes).

    Well done Sam.
It takes a chap in the States to spot a bit of news that we have not had on TV here.

Glad to see someone is "monitoring" the news channels!

    Thanks for that.
Not many of the Gallipoli ships still around.
The Australian War Museum has the only remaining lifeboat from the original landing. Seems it was a steel one from a British warship used to ferry ANZAC Troops & survived (with bullet holes) because it was metal. All the others were apparently wood & were chopped up for firewood.

"one of only three British ships remaining from the whole 1914-1918 war" is what it says - I feel a trip to Pompey coming on later this year - been a while since we did the last one - so much more to see with Mary Rose and now the M.33 coming in. Thanks for the heads up Sam

Yep - she's the smallest of the three, but also the only one still looking like a warship, the other two being HMS President (a Q Ship / sloop, now used to host conferences on the Thames) and HMS Caroline in Belfast - the only Jutland survivor, but half light cruiser and half shed at the moment....

There is a fourth and she is the smallest, H.M. Coastal Motorboat 4.
She can be seen in the Imperial War Museum Duxford. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HM_Coastal_Motor_Boat_4

If we're counting CMBs there's another one - CMB 9 is in Bristol, afloat and restored to her 1918 Distance Control Boat (ie. master unit for radio controlled vessels) guise. I believe DM got a go on her last year....
