Thread: Pictures from Omaka Aviation Museum in Blenheim, NZ

Default Pictures from Omaka Aviation Museum in Blenheim, NZ

I took these a few years ago while I was in New Zealand. The Knights of the Sky exhibition contains aircraft and dioramas constructed by Peter Jackson's workshop. Interestingly, the faces of the pilots etc. are modelled on real people that work in the workshop. Perhaps Mr Jackson likes to play Wings of Glory at 1:1 scale?

Oh yes, a 'must see' for anyone visiting the land of the long white cloud. Even my wife enjoyed the diaoramas and exhibits though she did sneak off to the cafe while I continued to drool

Great photos Dan - Omaka is on my list for when SWMBO & I go to NZ for our retirement holiday late this year (she's been kind enough to indulge me on this AND Hobbiton )

What gorgeous pictures, Dan! Thanks for sharing them. These Vintage Aviation guys do amazing work - I love going to their site and looking at what they've done and have in the works - it's a great website.

I'd love to make it to this museum some day.

    All the best,
    Matt

Thanks for sharing these pics with us, Dan.
These photos keep me thinking how the hell is it possible that so many fantastic aircraft survived (even if only in parts) or where carefully rebuilt on a continent/island that far from the Great War fronts. This is just amazing what kind of people/hobbysts/enthusiast live down under.

Nice pictures, Dan. The S.E.5a pilot preparing to leap clear just before his machine crashed is dramatic.

That diorama is based on an actual event.
From memory the Aircraft caught fire & the Pilot climbed on to the wing & flew it by the joystick & managed to land it safely.

I am sure someone (Zoe?) will be able to give further details.

Here is another pic of one of the Omaka Dioramas showing MvR's Fokker Triplane after the crash & Aussie soldiers getting plenty of souvenirs!

"War Birds", the Diary of an Unknown Aviator" - quoted in Pilots Luck (Clayton Knight)
Grid Caldwell's SE5a collided with a colleague's. It went into a spin because his aileron controls were jammed.
He balanced it out by crawling out onto the wing, then at the last moment (before it hit the ground) he landed the plane by reaching in and grabbing the joystick.

PS The diorama may be based on the painting in the Pilots Luck book

    Thanks for the insight, Barry.
Next time our honorable UK WingCo draws a usual fire card we shall tell him to try it out.

The scene is exactly the same as the Omaka Diorama.
Consequently - unless someone knows of another SE5a landed in a similar way in the trenches - this is the source of the diorama.
Just to repeat myself, the SE5a was not on fire - it was damaged in a collision.
Incidentally, the pilot Grid Caldwell survived the crash landing without serious injury.

PS Please note the left aileron is jammed fully down in the diorama, while in the drawing the left aileron is damaged.

PPS The dioramas do look great so thanks for posting the picture.

Love the DH2, too - its size is very apparent in this picture, unless the mannequin is extra-large...
