Thread: Building the HANDLEY PAGE.

  1. #1

    Default Building the HANDLEY PAGE.

Here is the sequence in which I built My Skytrex Handley Page Bomber.

    1. Clean up parts. Use a fine swiss or needle file for the plastic.
    2. Wash plastic parts in detergent.
    3. Allow to air dry.
    4. Drill the location holes in body and wings.I used a No 62 drill.
    5. Trial assemble wings.
6, Glue bottom wing ensuring distance on both sides are =.
    7. Use the center struts and wing struts to ensure the above, by poping on the
    top wing without glue.
8, Cut the outer struts locating pins shorter to ensure the top struts over the wings have a hole to glue into later.
    9. Glue the wing struts to the bottom wing in pairs and add engine pods without glue.
    10. Make sure that the bottom locating peg on the engine is cut short to allow under-cart struts to share the holes in the wing.
    11. Glue on top wing, leaving engines floating in their holes for now (this helps when painting).
    12. Glue on lower tailplane.
    13. Glue lower tailplane struts in pairs.
    14. Glue on top tailplane, leaving rudders unglued to aid painting later.
    15. File down projecting struts and fill holes. Do not fill holes where wheel struts and wing supports will go in later.
    16. Glue on tail skid.
    17. Assemble the undercarriage (and the best of luck to you!). You will need to trim the wheel hydrolic arms to length.
    18. Add the top bracers to the wings and glue.
    19. Place props and crew in place but do not glue yet.
    20. Spray undercoat.
    21. Remove crew and props and swing engines and rudders right and left, to help with painting.
    22. Paint!
    23. After painting, spot glue crew, engines and rudders into place.
    24. Add decals and varnish to taste.
I hope this will help those of you intrepid enough to take on this giant. It is not one that I would recomend for a begginer at building, Start on an easier one.
Painting guide as for my other builds .See my last thread.

    Thanks Dom.
When you get your new printer going, how about some big decals for the bombers and balloons. I had to nick these from a Revell kit. The one on the side is one of yours.

I was going to wait for the Col to do some, but now I guess it will be my own
Acrylic and a favour from a friend who has a C.N.C. machine.

That looks really nice. I want one but OC home is unlikely to authorise the expenditure so soon after the arrival of new machines at the front, especially with with more crossing the channel as we speak.

I slung my bits box of decals years ago, so I'll second your proposal for Dom to make some bigger ones when his printer arrives.

In reply to your passing wit old socks, I am actually getting out this weekend. From early tomorrow morning you can poke as much fun at me as you like without the fear of a rejoinder from my stinging rapier like repartee. I will be on leave in sunny Scotland until Late om Monday, so make hay whils the sun shines. I will not make so bold as to suggest which part of your anatomy this relates to, but keep your backside firmly on that seat in the Officers Mess. You are the Duty Officer for the weekend.

For the wheel support try a bent paper clip.
Decals were courtesy of Dom and the large ones robbed from an Airfix Camel.

Just thought I'd add a couple of photo's of my finished HP 0/400

Fuselage Roundels are Dom's 10mm and lettering is Letraset (Again)

The wing roundels came from Hannants and are actually made for the HP 0/400. I only found out about these after asking the guy from Skytrex. He said his were hand painted but that Hannants did some in 1/72. As it turned out they do both 1/72 and 1/144, and the 1/144 ones have the four huge wing decals that you see here. I do advise painting the area under the roundels with white first as they are a little more transparent tham Dom's.

Important note: Use lots of Microset and Microsol for the upper wing decals as those ridges are really deep!!!

A Quick question if I may. Where do you get Letraset from these days. My local Draughting Office Store don't stock it any more.

The ribbing on the wings looks a little heavy. Did either of you guys sand or file it down a little. If you were to start another would you? By the way they look great!!!!

Unfortunately the ribbing on the wings is too heavy - looks as if Hugo Junkers designed the wing. I haven't started mine yet but I am certainly considering taking some 'Wet & dry' paper to it first.

You can still get it direct from Letraset on line. Obviously the thought police won't allow links but if to put .com after Letraset it might come good

Tony, what font are you using?

Actually, the thought police have no issues at all with links being posted to sites that do not compete with the site sponsor... as has been stated before.

Thanks. I didn't but when I was applying the wing decals wished that I had. they take up so much of the decal it looks oval when viewed from above and I had problems with it splitting, even when using MicroSol.

It's 'Helvetica Medium Condensed 5mm'. I used 7mm to start but it was too big and looked awful. It's a great font and I've used it in different sizes on quite a few planes now.
