Default The Augsburg Raid March 1944

Here is a AAR of a mission I want to host at Prague Summer Con 2015.

Main actors are the four-engines heavy Lancaster Bombers and their opponents in the night fights over Germany.

The gaming area needs the three official Ares Games gaming mats.

First mat is the coast, called sector A.

Second mat is the country, called sector B.

Both sectors are guarded by two heavy night fighters of the Luftwaffe.

Third mat is the city, called sector C.

This sector is guarded by two Focke Wulf 190 A6 of the Jagdgeschwader 300 "Wilde Sau"

Per dice is determined where in the different sectors, a Lancaster bomber appears. This simulates the bombers, which were caught by the Würzburg Radar stations and their position transferred via radio to the German nightfighter crews. This is for sector A & B. The night fighters know the positions of their enemies and can locate them with their on board radar.

Sector C ist different. Enlightened by the burning target city and search lights, the Focke Wulfs spot their targets with out radar and attack.

Unfortunately the Lancaster in sector A wasn't located at the beginning of the game and appears in the second turn. So the two nightfighters had no idea where the target is before they planed the maneuvers. (I will change this, because this rules contains a risk of misplaning - so at the start of the game every interceptor has an orientation where to fly first)

It's not that easy tho choose the right direction and maneuver for the heavy fighters. You see, the shark camo Bf.110 choosed the wrong angle for approach.

By the way: All Lancasters fly with fast speed straight to the target. If they loose more then 50 % of damage points in sector A & B, the Lancaster will break off the attack and try to leave the gaming area to the left or the right.

In sector C the Lancaster will not break off the attack and try to throw the bombs into the city.

Wilde Sau fighters can attack from all directions and the Butcher Birds did their best to bring the Lancaster down.

But 42 hitpoints are hard to reduce.

The Lanc passed the Focke Wulfs and throwed the bombs into the city.

Here you can see the Flak activity. I used the sector template for the solo games and determined with a dice, where the city search lights look for bombers. (have a look at the ruler in the picture)

Meanwhile the heavy fighters try to catch up with their targets.

The shark camo Messerschmitt ended in front of the Lancaster. As long as the they are in sector A & B the front gunner does not see the fighter and has no chance to shoot at it as long as the fighter has no chance to fire at the Lancaster, too. This does not count for sector C over the burning city.

The black Bf. 110 scored a nice hit and killed the frontal gunner and one engine. I used the optional extended crew damage.

An overview of the Bomber stream heading for Augsburg.

The 1st Lanc leaves the map. The "Wilde Sau" fighters weren't able to get in range again. Only the Flak send a last goodbye with an A-damage.

The second Lancasters continued the way to the city, followed by the black Bf.110 that catched fire.

Fire makes a night fighter visible for all gunners in range.

For a loaded Lancaster a fire damage is the immediate end.

The second Lancaster is shot down the moment it drops the bombs.

Dambuster versions of the Lancaster inflict more damage to the city.

Meanwhile the unlucky sector A Bf.110 detected a Mosquito.

Mosquito fighter were in the bomber stream as Patfinder with marking bombs, night fighters and normal bombers.

The Luftwaffe fighters have to avoid the contact with a Mosquito. The moment they get into fire range the Mossi starts an attack. (same firepower as a Beaufighter )

I have an order in whis new bombers & Mosquitos enter the game. Each time a sector has no Allie plane, a new one appears in this sector

Meanwhile the Ju 88 tried to start a "Schräge Musik" attack. The fighter knows the flight direction of the bomber and aproaches from the left.

The Lancaster has no possibility to detect and shoot at the Ju 88 because the Ju 88 isn't able to shoot at the Lanc, too.

If the night fighter would aproach from behind it has the choice of the normal attack or the try for an use of the "Schräge Musik". The figher decides - not to fire and the Lanc rolls a D6 to determine if the gunner spots the fighter. (1 - 5 no detection / 6 = Lanc fires at fighter without return fire for the shooting phase)

The Ju 88 fires with "Schräge Musik". I use a special D-damage counter deck for those attacks. (I removed all Zeroes)

16 points of damage isn't that bad and the pilot is wounded

After this attack and two hours gaming, I finished the test run.

    City bombed twiced
    One Lancaster shot down
One Mossie had to drop bombs and to return

I have to develop a point system for victory conditions.

I think this scenario gets very dynamic with 6 individual pilots. But they have to plan carefully to get in shooting position. The Lancasters can swallow many hits and an unlucky draw means the end of a Luftwaffe carreer.

Just caught up with this one Sven.
I am impressed with the whole set up and ideas. Who said bombing raids were boring?
One question that jumps out at me is which deck you use for the Mossie. I have two and have not used them yet because I can't decide on a deck.

    Thank you, Rob.

The Lancasters need more presence in the WGS section.

I used the M deck of the Beaufighter.

I know it's normaly to slow for the Mosquito, but I have no alternatives at the moment.

Interesting scenario Sven. Night fighting rules seems quite good, I need to try them myself. So far I was skipping planes with night camo, but that might change...
