    Default Newbie...

    Hello everyone,

I'm a newbie to this game. I am really into X Wing miniatures and didn't even know about this game until I stumbled upon it while looking for X wing miniatures. I looked on Youtube and there are not a lot of videos but I did scour the net looking for reviews. Simply, this game looks awesome.

So, I ordered the "Rules and Accessories" Pack along with several Spitfire's and German planes and those will arrive this week. Anybody recommend other planes to use? Not sure I want to get into the bombers unless there are a lot of missions you can use for those.

Can you use "Wings of War" cards for these planes to add another dimension? What about the "Fire from the sky" expansion pack? Can you use that with this game? I welcome all recommendations about planes to purchase and expansion packs that I should get my hands on.

    Thanks everyone.

    Chris

Welcome to the Aerodrome, Chris, from here near Norwich in the U.K.. You can use 'Wings of War' cards and the 'Fire from the Sky' expansion pack with your planes. They are from the original version of this game. If you explore the 'Aerodrome Store' link at the top of this page you will find some of the things that are available to expand your collection. Also exploring this website will give you other ideas.

    Thumbs up

G'day Chris & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the Pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.
Actually Fantasy Flight Games based the X Wing game on the original Wings of War game as they had the distribution rights before Nexus went belly up & then Areas republished the game as Wings of Glory.

All the old Nexus card & aircraft packs & extensions are fully compatible with the new Wings of Glory game.

There are some variations between WoW and WGF versions of some aircraft like the Sopwith Tripe--the designer has suggested treating the older cards as "War Weary" aircraft in need of overhaul but still flyable.

Welcome to the Drome Chris Not been playing long myself and just in case you are interested there is quite an extensive discussion which can apply to WGF as well as WGS relating to being new / learning under Missions - 'Circuits and Bumps'

    Thanks everyone for the welcome.

I'm excited as tomorrow I"ll be receiving my Rules and Accessories pack and some planes I ordered. I cannot wait.

I've been looking for old planes as well and they are obviously harder to find. I guess that's my penalty for discovering this game a little late. I found some older Spitfires but can't find any BF 109's. I'm focusing more on the European planes first then will move to the Pacific.

Any recommendations for sites to keep an eye on for older planes? I bought an older plane on funagain.com and a German Stuka on Amazon. I see Miniature Market is having a clearance on Italian Stuka's. I am awful at painting models so repainting it German colors probably isn't a good idea for me. Do you think simply slapping on German decals would work?

We are promised to get a re-release of the earlier WW2 planes; Trolling through the News and Announcements and the Dawn of War general discussion sub forums should bring up those threads.

So how do you account for the different maneuver deck sizes between old Wings of War planes and the new size of Wings of Glory? I got an old Spitfire and want to know what you veterans do to account for different card sizes.

    Chris,
The arrows on the cards indicate the max speed of the plane you are flying. With the later model planes, their speed was longer than the small cards. So, bigger cards for the faster planes. Wait for the Me-262 jets.

Basically, you use the cards the same way. There is no difference in the way you play the game.

Welcome to the Aerodrome! The new large cards are for late war planes to show the speed differences! If you want to do Battle of Britain or early war Pacific, the original cards work fine. It also reflects the evolution of the game and it`s different publishers. The WW1 and WW2 games were card games. The miniatures were released latter. I have in my collection three sets each of the DOW and FFTS and at least five sets of each squadron packs.

Welcome Chris! I take it from your name that you are in Chico/NorCal. I am from the bay area in Alameda, home of the USS Hornet. Guess which theater I am into...

I have all the US and Japanese planes and just started picking up European models. I have been picking up more since I watched Battle Over Britain 3 times in the last few weeks. What German planes have you picked up? I think you should at least try out a Heinkel if you are focusing on Europe.

I also recommend checking out this site thoroughly as there is some great support for solo play, which I found useful for getting the flow of the game down. I also give the Aerodome store props for having some great official and unofficial product.

Last but not least, keep your eyes on the skies for new planes with a strong showing from the Pacific later this year (do we have dates yet?).

Welcome and... Feel free to bring friends here!

All Wings of War stuff is 100% compatible with Wings of Glory. Beware anyway that all miniatures come with their own bases and cards - If you play with minis, you have no real use of the maneuvre decks in Fire from the Sky or old cards-only booster packs. WoW minis are a good buy anyway - always useful and fully usable.

Bf.109s and other Battle of Britain planes will be reprinted "soon", I guess within the year.

As far as the Italian Stuka is concerned... Depending on your aptitude toward history and where you want to set your scenarios, you can also leave it as it is and use it together with German planes. They operated in Mediterranean, Balkans, North Africa. I open one of my books at random: "On the 10th of April [1941], the Gruppo Ercolani with 6 R-2 (three from 236a Squadriglia and three from 237a) took off at 11.45 together with several Ju.87 from German Stukagruppe, under the protection of nine Fiat G.50 of 155o Gruppo and three Me.110 from III./ZG.26. Target: veichles retiring South-East of Tobruk".
Actually they had the opposite story - from the factory they came with German insigna, then Italian pilots flew them to Italy where Italian ones were overpainted.
