Default Raid on Bremen - After Action Report

This past Saturday night, we mixed it up over Bremen. The Germans were up against over-whelming odds, and the results confirmed it.

    We had 5 x Messerschmitt 109s and 5 x Focke-wulfs trying to knock down 6 x B-17s with 8 x P-51s as escort.

We were playing the Fast Play rules, with the newly added "Per Barrel Damage" - which amped up the damage inflicted.

Plan was to spearhead through the line of P-51s Roger had set-up in front of his B-17s. The Focke-wulfs went in first.

A Focke-wulf burned after first shots fired from the P-51. But, the FW's wing man returned fire, downing the only P-51 casualty of the night.

Jousting with P-51s proved to be disastrous. 2 x Focke-wulfs fell from one encounter with a 51. The 51 only suffering minor engine damage.

Only one FW and 3x Messers pushed through the 51s to find the B-17s licking their chops. The crossfire was horrendous.

As the first bombs fell on the Deschimag U-Boat Base (8 x 1,000 pounders) the AA guns went silent.

Only 1 Focke-wulf survived the onslaught.

CHANGES IN THE RULES: Our version of house rules "FAST PLAY" - worked very well. The addition of pitch to every play encouraged altitude change and made the dog fighting more 3D. The increased damage with the "Per Barrel Damage" made the game move faster and was very deadly. I liked both additions and thought they added to the play.

Here are a few pix from the slaughter... and I've included a copy of the FAST PLAY house rules (version 10)

Great AAR but a real slaughter for the German defenders.

    I really like the setting.

Did the Germans try to concentrate on one side of the fromation?

Did you youe aim bonuses? If yes - for fighters only?

    Oh my god.

I had a look on your fast play rules. Did you really used that values for the .50 cal armament?

Yes I will post the targets... Used actual photos from Bremen....
Yes we amped up the damage and it showed... Really added a white knuckle affect.
Yes we used aim and altitude advantages for bombers and fighters - Extra A chip.

The Germans tried to spearhead through the line of 51's, at what I thought was the weakest point of the formation... It was off to one side.
As soon as Roger (U.S.) saw where I was going, the hole was plugged. Plugged with burning German fighters!

I knew it was going to be a blood bath going in. Anything for the Fatherland! Really had an awesome time getting my butt kicked!

I am a purist when it come to the rules, but...

I have to admit and agree that 50 caliber armament appears understated as listed (un-modified) on the aircraft miniature flight stands.

What the Per Barrel Calibration (PBC) has done, was simply apply a uniformed value for each caliber/gun type, and give each aircraft credit for what they are bringing (per calibration) to bear during that firing solution.

The FW 190's were virtually un-apposed (my perception) prior to calibrating all aircraft armament under the change.

The question was proposed, why would the US aircraft choose a 50 cal. BMG if it had roughly the same yield as the British .303s (at the expense of available rounds/weight)?

If anything, it definitely hastened the action.

I have to admit, this is simply my interpretation of the ballistics involved (as a complete non-expert that is)

I made a bunch of these for the Raid on Bremen and they worked very well.
Glued this to Black Foam core and used brass clock hands with a Chicago Screw to hold in place.
Slapped on some self adhesive laminate for the "glass" crystal.

But, I think you could print on card stock for quick counters.
