    Default Cold Wars

Went to Cold Wars this weekend and the name was appropriate. Friday & Saturday when I got up it was 0.

Played two Sword & Flames games with some old friends and handed out some cards to promote the Aerodrome. Saw a few air games but only 1 WoG game. There was a game about to start and I thought it was awesome. It was the SAS raid on a German airfield. Here are a few photos of the setup.

What scale was it, Bob? 28mm? It looks pretty spectacular.

Glad you had a fun time!

    Great pictures Bob.
We had some large scale aircraft at WMMS but only on display, not in a game.
I can't get the attachments either.

I ran a WGF game with my Zeppelin Saturday night, too bad you didn't drop by Bob. 9 players, Zep survived with 5 hit points left after shooting down the last Entente plane that had just jammed it's guns. I'll post some photos and a recap tonight.

There actually were 2 Wings of Glory games but unfortunately at the same time. My Return of the Leviathan (Zeppelin) started at Saturday 6pm with the other, Attack on the Fleet, started at 8pm. Sadly I didn't get to see the other game at all as I was too busy running my game.

I had 9 players including a few rookies. I had one take to piloting the Zeppelin, two escorts and 6 Entents attackers.

As soon as the Zep cleared the coast it was set aflame. Can't make it out but the flames are full of blinking LEDs. (I'll be doing a 'how to' and include a video)

This young pilot started off with a Nieuport 17. He was finally downed after 20 cards of damage! Not bad for a 12 point plane. He and his father (not in photo) are excellent pilots.

After fighting off over 20 Entente scouts the Zeppelin survived with 5 hit points remaining.

One of the escorts was flown bt a rookie and she was the only scout that survived the entire battle.

Pete I was with a friend who is a dealer until 1800 then went to play a game where the flea market was. The people I played with were friends from Mass. We did ACW reacting when I was stationed there (85-90/ Ft Devens). We played until midnight. Sorry I missed you. I was looking forward to meeting you so I guess have to wait until Historicon or Fall In.

They were 1/48 scale. Can only think how much that must cost to put a game like that together.

Yup -- worked this time. I see I'm not the only one who pillaged a Disney toy store for its flying wings.... :)

Got them fine now thanks Bob.
Well worth waiting for. As you say must be worth a mint. Mind you someone worked that our 31 Giants at WMMS was over Ł1,000 worth on the table. That was after we had to abandon them because of the Fire alert.

Rob, this is the one I built for the scenario you put up for the early war campaign. It's a survivor! I still have to put the gunners on top...

Great reports, Bob and Peter Thanks for sharing them. The minis during the scenario you had participated Bob were stunning!
Did you use all the realistic rules for Zeps, Peter (gas cells and stuff)?

Yes. Zep had 123 hits out of 128(!), lost only one complete cell to Boom! All the fires were wimpy and went out quickly. Several cells had 3-4 hits but the engineers saved the day and earned many medals for their service. The Entente players thought I was a traitor (I also flew Entente) for drawing so many '0' hit fire damage cards. GMs get no respect!

Thanks Rob. I made it a bit shorter than Clipper's Zeps. It still is impressive with all the tiny planes buzzing about it. I will do another with the classic camo, maybe even have lights!

Thanks for info on the scale, Bob - 1/48 works pretty well for 28mm figures if you can't get exact scale (1/56 I think??)...makes for a pretty impressive display! It's a shame you and Peter were cross-purposes at the con.

Peter, like Rob, I really like your Zeppelin - and while I consistently drool over Clipper's beasties, yours is no slouch in the envy department - VERY nice work there. I look forward to seeing your camo version.

Thanks for the great pictures from the show, guys! Looks like a great time was had.

    All the best,
    Matt

A couple guys I know where there (including Capt Willard from this forum - he of the horrible dice rolls that lead to a failure of the Allies to win D-Day), and it sounds like they had a good time.

So... what does it take to run something at one of these here cons?

The troops behind the wall fires at the Egyptian unit advancing to the crossroad. He had 10 D20 to roll with a 1-5 chance to hit. 5 hits on the Egyptian unit.

The night before we had another game and 3 Dervish units charged 1 Egyptian unit. We had some really bad die rolls.

We played S&F Friday and Saturday night. Had a great time in both games. One of my British units (20 figures) ended the game with the LT and 1 rifleman. They never broke. We started out with 3 British infantry units (60 figures) and 1 gatteling gun (4 man crew). The Egyptians had 4 infantry units (80 figures) and 1 cannon (4 man crew). At the end of the game both sides lost their gun crews and the British had 18 figures left while the Egyptians had 30 left. What a great time.

John I missed meeting Teaticket (Pete) and didn't see any WOG games while checking out the games. I did get with some old friends and one of them I hadn't seen in 20 years. We gamed and had a good time which is what matters.

Well, a Disney park souvenir store was the only place one *could* get them, initially -- in my case: The souvenir stand just opposite Jungle Cruise at Disneyland (never been to WDW, darn it). Other than overstock on eBay, they've never been sold anywhere else.
