Thread: Dewoitine D.520

    Default Dewoitine D.520

Dewoitine d.520 is another fighter plane whose game performance has been over-limited by the official maneuver deck. Wiki describes Dewoitine D.520 as a fighter that could stand up to Me-109E, being slower but more maneuverable.

Shall we helped it by a few changes in the maneuver deck, like we did in case of Zero?

Wow! Definitely, Jan [I have a number of those fighters that need to be sent to action!]

Yeah Andy, i see you have a nice hatchery of those babies. They tend to get overlooked for reasons - they have really bad maneuver decks and really useless camouflages, but all that can be tweaked

So let's kick off - after talking to my buddy Michal, we would suggest using C deck (Zero, Hurry) and adding either

    1. long sideslips to both sides or
    2. 60° turns to both sides

    This way we would
    1. get rid of funny the "D" deck that fits heavy-bottom birds&bees
    2. make it a bit more maneuverable than Me-109
    3. make it a bit less maneuverable than Spit
    4. make it slower than Me-109

I'm going to have to take a long look at this one.
I definitely don't agree with 60 degree turns, though.

The most extensive and reliable source about the Dewoitine D. 520 and all its variants (production aircrafts, projects stopped by the Armistice of 1940 and prototypes, such as the D. 520, D. 521, D. 524, D. 550, D. 551, HD 780, D. 790...) is the rare book :

Le dewoitine 520, Docavia n° 4 written (in French) by R. Danel and J. Cuny.

    R. Danel received most of the original plans, technical documentation, etc. about these planes (for example : 650 plans of the D. 55x series !), compiled them in this book, then donated the documentation to Departmental Archives of Haute-Garonne (France).

I provided translated extracts (in English) of it on the War thunder forums. Unfortunately, most of the links seems broken now. Here is the link to the "front page" of the project : https://forum.warthunder.com/index.p...-its-variants/
    (very technical)

Some informations also in the short book : R. Danel, Dewoitine D. 520, Profil 135, nov 1971.

    PS 1 : the D. 524 and D. 551 are interesting beasts !

    PS 2 : The Réplic'Air association is building a replica of the D. 551. See https://replicair.fr/en/aircraft/dewoitine-d551/
(no news of the project since the COVID-19 crisis)

A picture of the D.551 (without camouflage painting) at the Aircraft Exhibition at Toulouse ('Semaine de l'Air') from 23 June to 1 July 1945 :
