Lightbulb Derbyshire Wings of Glory Scene.

I would like to let everyone know that on Wednesday evenings Galactic Models off Sadler Gate in Derby City Centre holds a Gaming Night. Anybody whose into wargames is able to attend for £1 admission and has to be at the shop by closing time which is 18:00 or 6 PM. This then operates like a lock-in until quite late on into the evening. Shop Address is 3 to 4 Strand Arcade, Sadler Gate, Derby. The shop stocks loads in terms of wargaming accessories and figures etc.

My wife and I attended for the first time on March 4th 2015 and played Wings of Glory WW2 (WGS) from around 18:00 until just after 21:15 as we were both hungry by then. Light refreshments are available at the shop. As we were playing WGS we were surrounded by three other games - one which was similar to Bolt Action as well as two Star Wars themed games. What a pleasant little get together this has turned out to be and we will definitely be going again as we learn our way through and then begin playing WGS. As I know the shop Manager well (Mark Meredith) we or at least I will be trying to attend as often as possible if anything for moral support. It really would be excellent if other WGS players or WGF players too came along developing the presence / footprint of Wings of Glory on Wednesdays as then Mark says that he will begin to stock related products and aircraft miniatures.

Apologies for a lack of photos from March 4th - will take camera next time and create an album in my Profile which will give everyone a good idea of what my wife and I are getting up to on these Gaming Nights. These will also give me a chance to show off my brand new 90 cm x 90 cm gaming mat which was created especially on the afternoon of March 4th and replacing my sellotaped hand-drawn A4 paper creation which we were playing on before! The new mat was created using and adapting about £20s worth of N Gauge model railway scenery rather creatively and is working out very well: I do miss those Kangaroos from the other hand-drawn mat though!!!

Two missions were flown using Basic Rules - the first one 'Green and Pleasant Land' featuring two Gloster Gladiator Mk 1 aircraft performing manoeuvres and circling objects in order to master the basics of the game. Then the second mission 'The Italian Job' built upon the experiences of the first when during VFR flight training the two gladiators were required to track down and fire tracer bullets ONLY at a Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II which had somehow ended up infiltrating the training area. The tracer bullets idea arose from what happened during a WW2 intercept performed by the RAF if the subject aircraft was not communicating via radio. But also introduced shot-ranges at a beginner-friendly pace to what had already been a very enjoyable and entertaining first mission above all scoring our 'first solos' in the Gladiator (and Re.2001 in my case!) We are making good headway in terms of learning the game.

If playing WGF / WGS at these evenings is of interest do please come along - it only costs £1 per person

Just a quick note to say that WGS was played again at Galactic Models on March 11th 2015. Many thanks to Mark the Manager and George for their hospitality

As we were playing George mentioned that on Wednesday afternoon a fellow Wings of Glory fan paid the shop a visit and was talking to him: Only problem was George could not remember his name or whether he played WGF / WGS.

Whoever that was - hello from me. Please if you are interested come and join the Wife and I on Wednesdays as you are most welcome. The more the merrier

Photos - From March 11th 2015 when the Bristol Beaufighter and Messerschmitt Bf 110G made their debut in our WGS 'arena' ... Much was learned about both types in this confined space!

When WGS was played on this latest occasion (March 18th 2015) the Wife and I appeared to master 'The Ten Minute Skirmish' as there were four played involving three aircraft ... None of which exceeded eleven minutes!

Also got the chance to take the latest Spitfire Mk 1 to join the fold out for a tootle - it is the le Measurer grey 'recon' Spitfire and this outing also started a new tradition with us ... All brand new aircraft introductions begin their first outings from now on from the Airstrip / Airfield facility located on our gaming mat. Busy night with X-Wing and Warhammer 2040 games also being played at the same time. Only grabbed a few photos this time - here are the best of the bunch

Hello Everyone, March 25th 2015 was the latest WGS Session at Galactic Models Gaming Night as surrounded by our friends playing X-Wing and Warhammer 2040 ... Plus one other game I am not quite sure what it was but it involved plenty of dice-activity and ended with one of the most joyous victories I have ever witnessed!

As possibly overheard as far away as Little Eaton (sorry but it was immense / funny at the time)

Photos ... Oh yes we have the pick of the bunch for you. One two-aircraft scenario lasting for one hour and twenty minutes in the skies of 'Kent. August 1944' ...

Will do and contributing photos is a pleasure. So far each week has featured a new aircraft type for one / both of us.

Turning out to be an excellent gaming night - everybody is very friendly and welcoming plus I have known Mark whose shop it is for a few years now. Marion and I aiming to play WGS there as often as possible

It's Wednesday ... It's Galactic Models Gaming Night and today three of us are heading down to the shop on Sadler Gate (Derby City Centre) for a WGF and WGS combined extravaganza. So long as I have permission I will bring back some photos of both WGF and WGS in action: Latest aircraft to be put into action WGS-wise are two more Bristol Beaufighters including the Mk VIF and another Messerschmitt Bf.110C-7.

As said previously if you know how to get to the shop and play either WGF or WGS please x 3 come and join the fun. This is turning out to be a great night most of all for playing Wings of Glory and X-Wing plus Warhammer 2040 but all board or wargames are welcome.

What a night April 1st 2015 has turned out to be at Galactic Models. Definitely the busiest I have seen it and we had our usual spot reserved for us. Just as well as at this Gaming Night WGF appeared for the first time care of Simon a k a Maverick.

WGS was also played - thank you Simon for coming along and for an excellent introduction to actually playing WGF for the first time. The full range of photos are on their way to you via e-mail but here for this thread are ten of the best:

    Default All pilots need sustinance!

    Excellent photos from Barney,

    WW2
The good lady had an interesting set of tactics,
fly wide, wait for the other pilot to do most of the fighting,
then attack in at the last minute to finish off the enemy and take all the glory
    Typical Spitfire pilot...!

WW1 ~ The Red Baron made his obligatory appearance and made the difference....

A very interesting evening with the ability to compare the differences between WW1 and WW2

A super evening and three hours literally flew by, let alone the aircraft.

Next time we will take the time to record the events and produce an AAR for all to enjoy.

A super evening with biscuits as well!

Thanks Barney and the Long Suffering Mrs for a superb evening

    now off to the Mess.......!

Sorry this AAR from April 8th 2015 is a tad late - have been busy although Galactic Models Gaming Night was attended. Unmissable and easily the highlight of the WGS playing week in this neck of the woods. With the arrival of our first Medium Bombers imminent the Wife and I set up a Messerschmitt Bf.110C-7 which is detailed as a fighter bomber with long-range fuel tanks as a bombing aircraft to intercept. Even bearing in mind the compact gaming environment these intercept missions were fun firstly using a Bristol Blenheim Mk IF aircraft and than a pair of brand new N A P-51D Mustangs to bring the marauding Axis aircraft down ... Or be brought down if not careful or complacent in going about our duties!

Five of the best - the full range can be seen over on my profile.

Certainly was along with a couple of cans of Relentless - that is the good thing about Galactic Models: You can bring your own refreshments although Mark already stocks a good selection at the shop in his mini-fridge.

The only thing not allowed is alcohol as the shop does not have a license. Also IMHO alcohol can have the potential to impair play so I agree with that rule from both these points of view

I am going to try to get over one week - SWMBO has given pass , but not this Wednesday as my daughter is visiting.
Where is the best place to park at that time of day?
I don't come in to Derby very often but Bold Lane car park is nearby and there used to be parking on the Strand. Is that still the case?

    Hi Richard
Not sure of your location in life?
if it helps you can drive to my place just off J28 M1
leave your car there and we can travel to Derby together?
Car parking is 'interesting' and for three hours was £6 so not cheapest around
if you can make the 29th April that could be a good one
look forward to hearing from you, and meeting soon

    Hello Richard,

You mentioned Bold Lane car park which is the closest available as Galactic Models is in the Strand Arcade. There is meter parking available still along the Strand but I would recommend Bold Lane over this option as we know it so well.

Would be great to see you - the more the merrier is always the case now Mark Meredith (Manager) has said that following Bolt Action accessories Wings of Glory is what he is about to begin stocking next. I have already begun to order all of my new Miniatures via Galactic Models (used to buy them on E-Bay) as a supporting gesture towards this move.

It is also looking very likely that this week no Boeing 787-8 modern airliners will be getting in the way of proceedings so what I plan to do is bring WGS down to the shop early as I will be without the Wife until about 20:30 and run some training scenarios / solitaire scenarios involving the N A B-25B / C Mitchell seeing as we have just acquired two. Then if anybody who would like to play WGS does show up before 6 PM I will firstly be there and can also easily just 'plug and play' anyone into the scenario as a fighter / interceptor aircraft. Also likely to run will be last week's hotly anticipated but then at the last minute delayed Bristol Beaufighter Mk IVF vs Heinkel HE.111 H ... massacre??! Hopefully as the Wife loves Beaufighters and so long as those BoOm CaRdS stay away!

Even if it takes a Boeing 777F-200 Freighter to get us there this week I will be making up for lost time this week after last week's no-show (tutoring commitment.)

    Hi Simon and Barnaby,

firstly I live in Burton on Trent, so thanks for your offer Simon but...
Bold Lane seems the best choice as I know where it is and I don't think they have changed the roads too much so I think I can still find my way

I have only played WW1 and all my aircraft are WW1 but I am quite willing to have a go at WW2.
I am looking at trying to get down next Wednesday 29th April. I work until 5pm in the centre of Burton so I should be able to make it before 6 as long as I can get away on time.

I'm looking forward to seeing you there

Rich, If you are a tad late but definitely still coming contact the shop on 01332 344033 and speak to George whose usually there on Wednesday afternoons. They will then know to look out for you.

When Simon joins us we play WGF and WGS but when Simon is unavailable it's usually the Wife and I or me alone with WGS on the go. You are in exactly the situation I was in before Simon joined us and I had only ever played WGS / all my Minis are WGS and my gaming mat is a little on the compact side (and the DIY side - see photo!) But it works very well so far. All I have to do now is keep a N A B-25 Mitchell medium bomber from flying off it by accident. Simon plans to join us on 29th April - I will definitely be there as will my Wife who will be joining us later.

The roads into Derby from Burton have not really changed significantly - Have not found myself in Burton since 1999 when I last DJ'ed at a nightclub called The Refinery (and there was a pub nearby called Barnaby's - no relation!) Used to be a crackin' night out back in those days though we still had 'the Jube' around the corner!!!

BTW Thank you for the hilarious PM I have received about trying to fit either a Boeing 787 or Boeing 777 Freighter down Sadler Gate or The Strand ... You know who you are!

The Wife says I should try a KC-135 ... Now where would I get one of those from??! Would definitely bring something classy into the equation

Anyway jokes aside I'll be there Wednesday - Also got something Dewoitine D520'ish on the move now those Minis have joined us too (these fought on both sides - Allies and Axis) so if anybody does fancy turning up for a game I'll easily be able to 'plug and play' you into something I have planned with those or the pair of Kawasakis I otherwise have waiting to shred those Mitchells!!!

It's Wednesday and this quick message is to say that Aussietonka (or Barney) will be at Galactic Models Gaming Night today ... Sporting a brand new 120 cm x 120 cm Gaming Mat which has been created in the hope that a more bomber-friendly gaming environment will result compared with what has been going on regarding my usual Gaming Mat! Needless to say it is another DIY effort produced in the same style as my other mat which has appeared in many photos.

I will be playing solitaire WGS for part of the night - hopefully not too long before the Wife is able to join me and should anybody else feel like it the usual invite is extended ... The more the merrier.

Will bring some photos back and am looking forward to it

Have just returned from Galactic Models Gaming Night having played a 2 hr 25 min solitaire scenario which began with three aircraft but eventually involved four. The Wife was delayed returning from Edinburgh so she was unable to come along but nevertheless what a great night ... Here is what happened. No shooting ... Just training for three Dewoitine D520 aircraft which arrived brand new into my Collection last week. This scenario began at 18:00 hrs GMT.

STATUS: Training. RULES: Basic. MODS: Circuits and Bumps - based on my original 'Circuits and Bumps' stick and rudder experience Mission which can be found on here (WGS Missions Section.)

    Diary Of Events:

18:05 GMT - Three Dewoitine D520c aircraft airborne one after the other from airfield located on Gaming Mat. Base is RAF Little Fartington in England during 1941. French pilots are on Squadron Exchange.

18:45 GMT - Dewoitine D520c # 2 required to perform violent Immelmann manoeuver placing stress on both airframe and pilot alike. Pilot suffering from g-loc condition hits head hard and complains of incapacitation. D520c stays on gaming mat.

18:50 GMT - Flt Lt Bob Dunkin despatched flying Gloster Sea Gladiator N5516 / N from base to assist stricken French pilot in safe recovery to base. Four aircraft now airborned from RAF Little Fartington.

19:15 GMT - Dewoitine D520C # 3 lands normally back at base. Instructed upon arrival to remain on ground as safety precaution due to developed situation aloft.

19:45 GMT - Stricken Dewoitine D520C # 2 recovers safely to base with pilot still seriously incapacitated by head injury. Two aircraft down. Two still to land.

19:50 GMT - Stricken Dewoitine D520C # 2 still on runway as D520C # 1 is making an approach. D520C # 1 forced to go around and returned to the traffic pattern.

20:00 GMT - Stricken Dewoitine D520C # 2 still on runway as Gloster Sea Gladiator is making an approach. Flt Lt Bob Dunkin forced to go around and returns to the traffic pattern.

20:15 GMT - Dewoitine D520C # 1 lands normally back at base but is low on fuel. Remains on ground as a result.

20:25 GMT - Flt Lt Bob Dunkin recovers safely to base: END EXERCISE / END EX with all aircraft now on ground ... Gordon Bennett what a close shave that one was!

Photos: Here are five of the best of this action as it was taking place. Includes Gloster Sea Gladiator photo.

A very nice evening it must have been Barney, although the wife's absence reduced the fun factor for sure. Frankly I can not wait for the moment your pilots stop that peaceful training and start pressing the fire buttons
Yes, the bigger mat, the greater fun and place for maneuvering. Well done. Personally I prefer 2/1 metres mats that allow bombers to be intercepted on approach or return.

Shots do get fired here but my preference if playing solitaire / going solo with Glory is to practice stuff and conduct training sorties. The Wife was sorry to miss out on playing this week but like I said to her the delay in coming back from Edinburgh was beyond our control. I think that this one has to have been my best training sortie since the one I conducted on our kitchen table at home amidst which I found myself with a left rudder jam ... right rudder jam ... only 90 cm x 90 cm in terms of gaming environment. Plus an angry looking Reggiane Re.2001 Falco sat directly on my tail. Yet I managed to get out of this utter pickle by using Immelmann manoeuvers and side-steps ... oh and the helpful selection of a 'B Token' BoOm CaRd once within range of that not so friendly looking Re.2001 again.

Boomshanka! And during a so-called training session too

    Cheers Simon, will do.
Not sure when it will be, I've got a pretty busy May coming up starting with Newark this weekend.
If you can make it over to Burton some time I am usually at the club on a Tuesday night but generally arrange games in advance so let me know in good time if you do as I will not usually be playing WGF.
I think there is a good chance of seeing JohnBiggles, Ringbolt and F O Kyte this weekend at Newark so we may look at arranging something.

    Get well soon Barnaby

Thank you for the Get Well Soon messages everyone. Simon / Rich - sorry it had to be a no show yesterday but I have suffered a bad bi-polar relapse and this one is taking it's time to shift itself.

I really am missing playing Glory at the moment something chronic but this is also just not possible with the mood swings I experience: Much about playing Glory is fun - I want it to stay fun.

I am being honest about what is going on because should I have to pull out of a future commitment unexpectedly or appear to be lacking interest then those who know me will know straight away what the matter is. Because needless to say I am determined not to let this condition beat me. Had it for 10 years now and until I discovered Glory (2014 to 2015) nothing was really helping much with this other than getting married in 2007.

Hoping to return to Galactic Models Gaming Nights soon.

I can answer for Rich Simon.
We have a big joint event with both the Sealed Knot and the English Civil War Society involved to celebrate the official opening of the new National Civil War Museum.
I will also be limited as to my postings Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

    Hi Simon,
As Rob said, big event at Newark, I shall be going straight after work tomorrow

The club I go to is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from about 7pm and try to finish in time for a pint at the pub next door - Monk's Bridge, I generally go on a Tuesday
BAD Wargamers (Burton and district) at the Priory Centre, Church Road, Stretton, Burton on Trent, DE13 0HE

we play very varied games and, if organised in advance, you could probably get players for just about anything you want to play

Is it possible to just turn up there with WGS or can we speak to somebody in advance. I know Stretton well and the Wife is available to play WGS on Thursdays in general. Instead of returning from Edinburgh like she is on Wednesdays leaving me to soldier on at Galactic Models with Simon when he can come over / anybody interested / Myself playing solo or solitaire - speaking of which ...

Next Wednesday's plan is the GMRD or Galactic Models Race Day if I am playing solitaire. It's basically Reno meets the Red Bull Air Race - one aircraft of each type having to complete a 3D Scenery assault course involving maneuvers, no cheating or deck-swapping but no firing either. More of an air show type scenario. Been waiting to do this for some time and the earlier WGS types such as the Gloster Gladiator are going to LOVE this!!!

If I get news of an opponent wishing to join me plan off - normal WGS / WGF will be on the cards. More making up for lost time after having to drop out of this past week.

    Hi Barnaby,
You can just turn up but there may be problems with space as Thursday we are in the smallest room but having said that there is room for 6 6x4 tables
I tend to go on Tuesday when we are in the big back room. The entrance to both rooms is via the rear door.
There is free parking but it's the polling station so next Thursday ....

    The club website is :-

We are quite a small club but we are friendly and welcoming

Well done to you and your wife, Barnaby, for promoting the game at Galactic models. It makes me wish I was still living in Chesterfield so that I could visit your sessions.

May I ask what the Stewart's tins, showing pictures of a Spitfire and a Lancaster, are, please?

These tins did contain Stewarts Shortbread and are available from The Friendly Farmer whose off the A1 / A46 / A15 in the Newark Air Museum area. There is one tin of the BBMF Spitfire Mk 1 and one of PA474 (Lancaster BBMF) ... Then a bigger tin which I use for paints at home with the three most commonly seen BBMF types seen on it overflying Beachy Head. For some reason I have never seen such a tin with just the Hurricane on the lid.

Stewart's Shortbread also comes in tins featuring classic and vintage cars and I think there are three - one of which is an Austin Eleven Hundred. I don't know where else sells this brand of shortbread but it is made in Perth, Scotland.

Making up for lost time the choice of what I take to Galactic Models Gaming Night this week (tomorrow) is important. Unless I am joined at the last minute I will be playing Solitaire until the Wife is able to join me - she is in Edinburgh again as I write this.

So far I have a 'firing' and a 'non-firing' option - both of which involve four aircraft. The 'firing' option is a two-on-two: Fiat Cr42s vs Gloster Gladiator Mk 1s as the Gloster Sea Gladiators both went for an outing on the dining room table together recently. The 'non-firing' training sortie looks at what both the Nakajima KI-84 Hayate and Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen are all about. Involving four aircraft again.

    Looking forward to it ...

A major Glory session is lining up very promisingly for later on today featuring both Simon Comben (Maverick) and Myself (Aussietonka) along with both World Wars. My plan has had to change however from Fiat CR.42 Falco vs Gloster Gladiator Mk 1 to Kawasaki KI-61-I-KIAD vs Bristol Beaufighter Mk IVF plus just in case these games get too short I will be coming equipped with N A P-51Ds / Fw190D-16s too. Later on around the 8 PM (20:00) mark my Wife will also be joining in the session: Total is three but if you wish to add to that PLEASE DO you are most welcome. Particularly now normal services have resumed as I have recovered sufficiently from my recent bi-polar lapse.

Simon will provide an AAR and I will remember my camera so photos will be available too.

LOOKING FORWARD TO IT ... Big style!!!

Sir, we always carry a camera to capture the best of the action and the memories to share. Such as when a virtual superstar decided to come and drop in on tonight's WGS game ...

Another great night of action featuring Simon and Barney with Marion arriving in time to play two games with us as well ... Even though the first one ended prematurely for her with a BoOm CaRd! Things started off with the planned Kawasaki KI-61-I-KIAD vs Bristol Beaufighter Mk IVF action and this resulted in two games being played with these types: Both lasted around 10 and 15 minutes respectively. Then the WGF action began as firstly Simon gave me the opportunity to help him pace out a brand new WW1 Reconnaissance scenario which I found highly interesting as a learning experience. Following this came quite a long game in which the Red Baron flying the Fokker DR 1 Triplane met his match against the one and only ... Snoopy! Flying his Kennel. Throughout the scenario Simon took notes so that an AAR may be written on this session.

A second WGS session then began after Marion joined us having arrived back from Edinburgh as we were swapping back over for a spot of N A P-51D Mustang vs Nakajima KI-84 Hayate WGS action. So this was played with two Mustangs versus one Hayate flown by me for the first time. The session was composed of two games including the first one which ended with a BoOm CaRd for Marion. On both occasions the KI-84 Hayate was downed and when this happened during the second game both P-51D Mustangs survived. What a great night that certainly has seen me make up for recent lost time due to being unwell. It's great to be back playing Glory again!
