Galactic Models Gaming Night today sees WGS games being played courtesy of Myself playing Solitaire where despite this there will be some shooting! The line up features the Curtis P-40E Warhawk vs the Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen or Zero followed by a debut as the Grumman Martlet Mk 1 is deployed into combat against the Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II.

The Martlet represents the first of the navy-specific types of aircraft which just recently joined the Collection here: It also represents the first Royal Navy FAA aircraft into the Collection - also known as the Grumman Wildcat.

After around 20:15 (8.15 PM) there will be two of us playing as the Wife is joining me. May save the Grumman Martlet action up until then as she is interested in flying this type's debut. If you are interested see you there ...

Action packed five-game Session played at Galactic Models featuring the Grumman Martlet Mk 1 and Curtis P-40E Warhawk for the Allies: Up against the Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II and Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen for the Axis side.

The Martlet Mk 1 made it's debut in combat and stood up to the nimble Reggiane fighter valiantly. Three games were played with the Wife - one with her flying the Martlet and taking a likeness to it and two with the Curtis P-40E Warhawk with me flying A6M2. It was a quiet'ish night surrounding the WGS activity with X-Wing being played by two teams of others. BoOm CaRdS: 2 to report - one either side in Game 1 (Axis) and Game 4 (Allies - after only 5 minutes!)

Photos: Five of the best - I'll put the rest in an album on my profile.

Many many many humble apologies ... But due to my tutoring schedule for this week going 'skewiff' I was unable to attend Galactic Models Gaming Night yesterday.

What I found myself doing related once again to a certain modern airliner that begins with a B and is powered by 2 x General Electric GE-115C Turbofans ... That and there was at one point a bit of a random 5 minutes discussing the Clash song 'Rock The Casbah' which for those not into modern airliners that begins with A or B most of the time would have been the highlight. Also our Glory-playing friend from Qatar who was mentioned over in Officer's Club last month: Passed out on type and has begun to fly the Airbus A330-200 as First Officer with a major ME3 Carrier. This is the same trainee who inspired the thread WGP - Wings of Glory Present: Would it work? As posted by myself on here.

What I should have been doing was playing Glory!!!

Will definitely be making up for lost time next week - with a pair of Grumman Wildcats now knocking around this should spice up even a Solitaire Session just nicely until the Wife is able to join me. Then as she took to the Grumman Martlet Mk 1 so well last week she can easily be plug-and-played into one of the Wildcats or a Wildcat versus ... Now let's see. Kawasaki KI-61-IB Hien (NOT the D Token Distributor version) ... Or the Dewoitine D520C wearing Italian markings (the 'Stella' Edition) which has never been deployed into combat before (only into a training scenario four weeks ago.) Promise to make it a good one

I am afraid that a second week on the trot down Galactic Models Gaming Night has had to be put to one side: Usual reason - tutoring commitment.

This has been a blow as not only did we miss out last week but I also had the first Heavy Bomber flight in this direction lined up for a Solitaire training scenario pencilled in for tomorrow ... My plan says to delay this until next week down Galactic Models in order to seriously make up for lost time. There was to have been some single-engine action too but as those who have been watching my most recent photo albums may have already realised the Grumman F4F-3 and F4F-4 Wildcats made their combat debuts over this last weekend. Clearing the way for the Heavy Bomber to make it's debut by surprize ... Or so we thought!

Once again my sincere apologies over this one - hopefully we will return to the action next Wednesday (June 3rd.)

Planning in advance this week ... Wednesday June 3rd is looking excellent for my next 'gig' at Galactic Models Gaming Night.

WGS as usual and some interesting Solitaire Scenarios based on the introductory operation of heavy bombers unless anybody would like to join the fun in which case an alternative is easily arrangeable.

NOTE: Any Modern Airliners thinking of getting in the way of this Heavy Bomber activity ... well let's just say that there is a thwacking great B-52 in the attic on standby (Corgi one as well ... Nice!)

Sounds great Barney. Wish we could be there to witness this epic. Unfortunately we will be nearing Atlanta at about the time you are indulging in a firefight over Derby. I will, however, expect to see the stills on my return.

CANNOT WAIT until this week's Galactic Models Gaming Night later on today. Got all sorts planned ...

As usual the plan can be easily changed to accommodate anybody who wants to come and join the fun. Where it will be a mixture in my planned Solitaire Session of formation flying and Heavy Bombers - not one but TWO of them are heading that way today. Photos to follow

It has been Heavy Bomber Heaven at Galactic Models Gaming Night which was busy ... And don't I know it when I managed to fly an Avro Lancaster B Mk III off the gaming mat by accident in front of everyone. OMG! As the photo caption said - I'll include that one in this posting's Five Of The Best photos. Never mind this is what practice Solitaire Sessions are all about: That is the time to be flying off the board by accident and other such guff! Not at times like during the final 30 minutes of being there after the Wife had joined me slightly earlier than planned and attacked my Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress with a Messerschmitt Bf.110C-7!!! Even though the damage to the bomber was relatively light.

The Avro Lancaster which flew off the board by accident did actually perform a successful training sortie which lasted 26 turns and at one point entailed a spot of formation flying with a Spitfire Mk II after the 'Reset' button was hit. This was then followed by the Flying Fortress action.

Five of the best photos including the OMG! one - go on I don't mind if anybody does laugh at that one!

Today's word at Galactic Models Gaming Night ... Is Challenge. Well, either that or Duration?!

The Wife cannot meet me down there until around 9 PM today and so I have a record-breaking THREE HOUR Solitaire Session ahead of me.

Having said that though I have managed to pull off some remarkable SSs in the past - maybe my best one so far being the 3 x Dewoitine D520C and 1 x Gloster Sea Gladiator 'Pilot Rescue' scenario which took around 2.5 hours to resolve. But if anybody reads this and thinks that they would like to come and have a game of WGF / WGS ... please do

Thank you ... Consider it done.

A successful night on which ... Surprize! Our two Yak-1 fighters had arrived into Galactic Models today earlier than expected this week and so these made their combat debut against a marauding Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II fighter (Metelmicchi Edition a k a one of my latest repaints!) There was a slightly delayed start to the Session and an early arrival from the Wife and so the three hour Solitaire Session I was anticipating was never actually played: More like 2 hours Solitaire with 30 minutes played with the Wife to round off a really enjoyable time.

Here is a refreshing change: The Wife and I will be playing Galactic Models Gaming Night later on today throughout (WGS) due to a change in her work commitments. Usually it would be me playing Solitaire for a couple of hours then around 30 minutes with the Wife but both of us can play throughout today. The more the merrier of course if you feel like coming down ...

On the WGS table later the line-up features the Vybiral Supermarine Spitfire Mk II going on it's first 'tootle' in this neck of the woods and a Yak-1 Russian fighter. Also on the cards is some action involving the Grumman Martlet Mk 1 against Metelmicchi's Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II which first saw action last week against a pair of Russian Yak-1s.

    Barnaby,
I was going to ask what these were, and where I might get them.

OK, once in Photoshop, I managed to read the sides and Googled these:

Stewarts - Lancaster Bomber - Shortbread tin

Stewarts - Veteran Spitfire - Shortbread Tin

    Name: stewart-tin3.png
Views: 379
Size: 103.7 KB

    Additionally, I found this one:

Stewarts - Battle of Britian - Shortbread tin

However, now that I know what they were, originally, what are you using them for (besides mat weights)?

    Hello Mike,

These are indeed my Stewarts Shortbread tins - I have them all and use the bigger one for storing acrylic paints in my attic.

The other two smaller ones are use to house 3D Scenery as well as miscellaneous items and equipment for playing Wings of Glory. I do tend to decorate my gaming mats with some 3D Scenery as seen in so many of my photos.

Stewarts Shortbread comes from Perth in Scotland and I believe is sold throughout the UK. We obtained our tins from The Friendly Farmer which is on the A46 close to Newark Air Museum.

DOH!!! Guess who forgot to take their camera along to Galactic Models Gaming Night today ...

FORTUNATELY the Wife came to the rescue of this situation with the camera on her phone which turns out to have taken some good photos. Seven games were played in a WGS Session which totalled around 2 hours 45 minutes in length.

Before leaving it was established that the first of my public demonstrations of Wings of Glory will be taking place at the shop on Saturday 4th July 2015. I will be demonstrating WGS but if any WGF players would like to drop in and give a demonstration of WGF too you are most welcome and will be helping out enormously. Alternatively pop by the shop during the day to say Hi. This would also be most welcome as Galactic Models becomes the latest FLGS to stock Wings of Glory / Ares Games products.

STOP PRESS: Due to some disappointing news as just received today from Galactic Models.

GALACTIC MODELS GAMING NIGHT IS HISTORY.

It is with regret that the shop is pulling the plug on Wednesdays but there are a few reasons as to why this has happened. Mostly because of the cost of electricity and having George on site for an extra three hours to run Wednesday nights versus declining attendance and with that revenue earned. Having become a regular and having introduced WGS to the gaming scene here successfully I am both shocked and saddened by this development. Galactic Models Gaming Night will be fondly missed in this neck of the woods but may (subject to confirmation) be replaced in the future by some form of Sunday afternoon gaming outfit. Watch This Space.

However the Wings of Glory public demonstration day at Galactic Models will still be going ahead on Saturday 4th July 2015. Hope to see you there if you would like to come along - All Welcome.

Following the demise of Galactic Models Gaming Night (details above) please do not close this thread.

It can be used for updates on Saturday July 4th 2015 and to give details of further Wings of Glory events to this which are taking place at the shop in The Strand Arcade (Sadler Gate) in Derby City Centre.

This just makes me all the more determined to do well on July 4th and if possible involve others who for instance would be able to / interested in demonstrating WGF alongside me demonstrating WGS. It is also an opportunity for promoting the Aerodrome thinks me as Mark the Manager is fully aware of what we do here and it is also a tremendous asset to Wings of Glory (Wings of War) as a Wargame. I will be in the shop all day and the event is being publicised by Mark in various ways.

It would be fantastic if on the next day Galactic Models meets Wings of Glory what happens blows everyone's socks off and is not just successful but a great success ...

Very much looking forward to seeing you both. My plan is to be at Galactic Models from 10:00 AM until around 16:30 - later if required.

So what have I got instead of the usual AAR / Five of The Best photos after Galactic Models Gaming Night this week? Edinburgh to East Midlands Airport as BE267 flown real time on Microsoft Flight Simulator (flyBE flight - the Wife's return flight from work in Edinburgh too as it happens. Then thanks to naff all on the television ... East Midlands Airport to Edinburgh as BE268 flown real time -15 minutes on MS FS2004 (flyBE again using the same Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 turboprop assigned to BE267) before returning to naff all on the television again over dinner: Give me a decent game of Glory over everything I read about in the TV programme listings! The Wife is too tired to play today having just travelled back from Scotland but says that she is looking forward to a Kitchen Dogfight tomorrow - so not all bad news and I'll try and get some decent photos. Especially as this will feature (for the first time) the Hawker Hurricane. Well looking forward to that!

As I try and think of a bright idea as to how to fill this void ... I will no doubt think of something eventually but for now all I can offer is my apologies to all those who follow this thread. Roll on Saturday July 4th 2015 is all I can say as this remains unaffected by this latest development ...

GALACTIC MODELS WINGS OF GLORY PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION DAY 1

Saturday 4th July 2015: WGS Demonstration by Barnaby Dunkin.

Commencing at 11:00 Wings of Glory WW2 / WGS will be demonstrated to the general public by Barnaby Dunkin. This is a public participation event which aims to show WGS played under Basic and if requested Normal Rules. Throughout the day the opportunity will be open to fly the Bi-Planes of World War 2 in the shape of the Gloster Sea Gladiator vs the Fiat CR.42 Falco. The opportunity will also be open to fly something faster in the shape of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX vs the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate. With a 120 cm x 120 cm custom gaming mat in use throughout this event it is anticipated that it will conclude around 16:30. Although extension time to 17:30 based on demand has been allowed for.

As you may well appreciate Aerodrome Members are all welcome to come along to the shop which is in The Strand Arcade off Sadler Gate in Derby City Centre.

Even if it is just to pop in and say Hi it would be great to see as many faces as possible. Come along and have a laugh as I engage in my first ever public WGS demonstration and hosting my first public participation games in the process: The moral support will be very much appreciated. Additional faces from here will also assist greatly in promoting the Aerodrome to those showing a serious interest in the game and introduce the quite unique social side / banter aspect of playing as not seen elsewhere when playing PC games and other Wargames. I'll try and bring some photos back from this event to post on here ...

It's the big day ... Leaving for GM in around 15 minutes time so I can get an early set up and be there in case today's VIPs arrive early at the shop.

I'm a bit nervous having never done this before but hopefully give it an hour or so into the Demonstration for that to pass. Am taking camera so some pictures will be coming back from this event with me

Good luck with your demo games today, Barnaby! Most folks I've encountered are receptive and open to the easy of play of both WGF and WGS - I'm sure that will be the case with your mob there in Derby!

Get stuck in and make some converts - I'm sure the jitters will subside with the enthusiasm of play. It would be great if others nearby are able to 'show the flag' and help this worthy endeavor. At least you'll have Mr. and Mrs. WingCo watching your six for a while...

    All the best,
    Matt

Galactic Models first WGS Demonstration Day has just been completed and what a successful event it has been. The good news being that early next month all being well we get to do it all again. A total of three demonstrations took place along with one full game against an opponent during this Session where the rest of the time was occupied flying Solitaire training missions. Playing on the 120 cm x 120 cm gaming mat which I have worked fine on a day which I very much look forward to repeating in the near future ...

Must say a HUGE thank you to Flying Officer Kyte and Mrs Kyte for joining the Wife and I at the event today. Also thank you to Wings of Glory newcomer Richard Seville from Allestree who had fun learning and mastering the basics of WGS although he was actually more interested in playing WGF full-time.

If you fancy popping in you will be very welcome

Looking at what the Japanese player did with the biplanes there above, Barney I would rather called the place Galactic Butchers.

It was two biplanes versus one Nakajima KI-84 Hayate which was quite heavily damaged by the end of the skirmish. It was me playing this aircraft which was later shot out of the sky by brand new player Richard (mentioned) from Allestree in Derby. Both games were fun - in fact the entire day was fun. We are doing it again in August.

It's August 2015 and towards the end of this month ... There is to be a repeat of July 4th's Public Demonstration Day at Galactic Models.

As seen in this thread a whole day's WGS is open to the public and to fellow Aerodrome Members - as many of the latter as we can possibly get

Actual Date: TBA still but it will definitely be before the end of this month

Sorry to advise that for the moment the WGS Public Demonstration Day scheduled for August 2015 is on hold: Two reasons.

Firstly and mostly I am becoming unwell again. I suffer from bi-polar disorder quite badly and from the way I have been thinking about everything over the last five or so days I can tell this is what is taking place.

Secondly Galactic Models was supposed to begin stocking Wings of Glory / ARES Games products in conjunction with my last Demonstration on July 4th ... Then as a result of this Demonstration. Anyway this has still not happened rendering further Demonstrations WW2 / WGS or WW1 / WGF pointless IMHO if the shop is not going to stock items for the game.

Like I said sorry to be the bearer of bad news here but I want to be well enough for DONCASTER 2015.

Happy to advise that the next WGS Public Demonstration Day at Galactic Models is scheduled for the middle of September 2015: Two reasons.

Firstly and mostly DONCASTER 2015 and my recent ill-health are the current priorities ... Being fit enough to attend the Doncaster Event comes first when it comes to my WGS playing agenda.

Secondly With the date still to be confirmed this event will most likely be taking place during the weekend after DONCASTER 2015. I was supposed to have been abroad on a tutoring assignment by this weekend but that was recently cancelled owing to ill-health. For the moment Ares Games products including WGF and WGS are available to order through a supplier to Galactic Models who delivers to the shop on a weekly basis. This supplier is well stocked and also very reliable: As to when the shop itself will begin to stock WGF and WGS that is still a case of watch this space.

So far as well as myself demonstrating WGS we will have Richard Seville from Allestree as a WGS opponent and hopefully a WGF demonstration given by David 'Dave' Naylor from Darley Abbey in which both Richard and I will be players. Date TBC ...

Good to hear that things are moving again on this front Barney, and also that your current health problems are giving you the optimism to press on with this.
I wish you all the best and better health for Doncaster and the following weeks.
Thanks for all the good work.

    Question Potential New Event Question?

Who would be interested if one of my Wings of Glory Public Demonstration Days (held on Saturdays) was opened to the Aerodrome and turned into a Gaming Day for us. I am thinking of maybe two months / three months time to give plenty of notice as to when this would be held. Mark the Shop Manager has in the past advocated that the more interest I can bring into the shop regarding the game the better. What better way to do it ... Create an event?

Open to WW1 / WGF and WW2 / WGS. I would like to say Sails too but we may face a space restriction if both WGF and WGS are going to be played at the same time. However I'm not going to say never on this as it's Mark who has the final say-so. So Sails - TBA.

Public Demonstration Days have run before and been very successful - should the interest be generated then Galactic Models is still intending to become a full-time stockist rather than just having products available to order. Also the game was popular when Galactic Models Gaming Night used to run on Wednesday nights where it was regularly played alongside the likes of Bolt Action, Warhammer 4000 and X-Wing.

Additional Thought: Time frame for event may very well coincide with the release of WGS Series 6 or the now delayed WGF Staaken and O/400 releases giving us something to celebrate. The event would be held in Derby City Centre close to the main A38 / A52 roads into town which in turn easily link with the M1 / A50(M) and M42 motorways. Plenty of parking within walking distance including Bold Lane - which claims to be the world's safest car park ...

Please may I have your thoughts on this idea

    Go for it Barney.
It is one of the reasons the area Flights were set up in the first place.

Wink Sunday 29th November 2015: Galactic Models Wings / Sails of Glory Day.

Mark The Manager is a STAR! He and I have come up with the following plan for Sunday 29th November 2015 and a Wings and Sails of Glory Day which needs the Gaming Room (free of charge to us!)

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO THE AERODROME: Come and play WW1 / WGF and WW2 / WGS or Sails. There is even talk of prizes from Mark at the shop as well as a top table in the shop itself should we want to hold a tournament-style series of games over the day. This event is unconnected with my Public Demonstration Days and will I envisage require the Gaming Room which is bright and airy. Mark is all for really pushing the boat out (and the plane too judging by our combined enthusiasm!) So now all this needs ...

    IS YOU
