Reg. Fully appreciate the supportive nature of this but it's not just the moody git factor I wish to avoid everybody seeing. It's the drained and depressed feeling which has been going on for a while now in addition to which my sleep pattern is all over the shot ... It would just not be fair for me to inflict all this on anyone.
I just hope that this event now disappears into life's rich pattern so a friend of mine likes to say. Taking Squadrongate with it as it does so allowing my reputation to roll right again some day
Barney , happy to be your wingman. Your Rep is A1 with me buddy.
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
I second Paul's comments Barney.
Never Knowingly Undergunned !!
Chris this also means a lot. Great stuff to play first Glory game since September 29th 2015 and then come on here to discover this
To assist with my bounce-back when I am finally feeling up to it I am changing identities on here from Aussietonka to just Tonx. It was Sylvia (who thinks Ben's name-calling during Squadrongate has made her sound like a foreign country - Latvia for instance) who came up with the winning suggestion. Upon doing so her suggestion of remembering the good times so far but ditching the monstrous mouthful of a nickname in the process was something I strongly agreed with ... So I have requested a rebrand and this will hopefully appear soon.
Let us know when your new Avatar is up and flying Barney.
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Looking forward to it Barney.
See you on the Dark Side......
Be well soon mate
Cheers Everyone! In the back of my mind is that something good or positive will come from all of this one day
Paul so much for this support - I've got some slightly better news on the bi-polar relapse front. This latest one has now become my worst for two years and I am currently still confined to barracks ...
However the relapse is starting to feel as if it may at long last be turning a more positive corner. As you will have noticed in my photo albums WGS Sessions have started to be played in this neck of the woods again with the Lady Wife Mazzle as my regular opposition.
It's a sure good thing to be back playing WGS again as I have missed it so much due to my head being too fuggy for too long now
Thats great Barney .Small steps lead to giant leaps.
I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
They sure do and again for your support - way to early to say we are out of the woods yet but feeling like I am heading in the right direction again
Further quick one on Galactic Models where when better I was planning to give Sunday Afternoon Gaming a go as a potential regular replacement for Galactic Models Gaming Nights. That is until I found out that these too have either been suspended or stopped as of November 15th 2015! There is the slim chance that this stoppage may be temporary as the shop is now open until 10 PM on Thursdays in the run up to Xmas. But I have an ominous feeling about this after being told that the guys who used to play X-Wing on Wednesday nights were struggling to attend Sunday Afternoon Gaming too due to lifts home and other logistical headaches such as no buses running (my situation without the Wife.) To date the shop has yet to become a full-time stockist and the ordering-in situation remains unchanged since this last came up in the conversation for being problematic and disjointed.
My reckoning is that with no gaming nights or afternoons running (other than for Magic) Galactic Models may very well have dropped off the Wings of Glory / Sails Map by the end of 2015 ...
Hi Reg hope you are well. I think the best advice I can give on the Gaming Nights front points just across the Staffordshire border towards Burton upon Trent ... When I am better I will get confirmation on BAD (Burton and District) Wargamers Society before posting their location on here as to whether or not they could fit Wings of Glory into their Tuesday or Thursday night activities. Earlier on this year BAD W/S were sounding very positive as having potential for fitting us in around the same time as my three abortive attempts to join Derby Wargames Society ... Who despite multiple attempts either do not read their e-mails or worse are not welcoming new members at the moment - a bit cliquey maybe? It was then that I found out about Galactic Models Gaming Nights that were on Wednesdays and how that as a more open option allowed me to forge ahead and create a whole new Wings of Glory front for us to play on: Which between March and June 2015 was absolutely fantastic ... Though little did we know at the beginning unsustainable.
The second reason to consider a visit to Burton upon Trent is a big one which needs no confirmation: Spirit Games!
PS ...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34834799
They have named a storm after me haven't they? Rotters!!!
Burton on Trent is a bit of a route march for me. 70 miles = 1.1/2 hour car journey so no good for an evening and a bit of a push for a Sunday game. Not so much getting there but I don't look forward to the homeward journey after a hard days Flying if you know what I mean?
Not chuffed about the storm name then? Thought it might cheer you up!
It did Reg
All I hope is that Hurricane Barney does not affect the Wife up in Edinburgh over the next two days too badly ... Or her journey home from Edinburgh D-> East Midlands on a small'ish turboprop!
I am sure that I have read somewhere that Spirit Games has been in Burton upon Trent for 31 years this year. Very interesting to find out they used to be located elsewhere then probably moved to Burton for a more central location if they have always had a good reputation. However getting to Burton from West Yorkshire is something I remember well from when I used to be a nightclub DJ playing The Refinery (occasionally playing The Venue there too) c/o Ikon Records ... I agree that it is not the best of journeys particularly with the M1 in the current state (mess) that it is in! First got to know Ikon Records when I lived in Loughborough but continued to DJ in Burton despite a move back up north to Saddleworth (across the A635 / A62 from Holmfirth and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire) in 1997. Last DJ'ed there in August 1997 so both The Refinery and The Venue have probably been turned into flats by now ...
What WAS That Aeroplane? May some of you be wondering which overflew the UK south to north on November 28th 2015 between 15:30 and 17:30 GMT. With such a loud and intrusive noise attached to it this aircraft overflying would have been very noticeable.
The next assurance is that this aircraft is NOT suffering any technical failure or any other sort of trouble.
It was a Cavok Air Antonov An-12 (UR-CJN) which is a Russian manufactured four engine turboprop aircraft. Routing from North Africa over the Mediterranean and then France before crossing the Channel into UK airspace. As I am writing this it is still airborne having now turned north-westerly near Lancaster. It's on Flight Radar 24 as CVK7023 which is using the BAe 146 / Avro RJ shaped icon. Believed to be inbound to Prestwick (PIK / EGPK) ...
The reason for the aircraft creating such a noise from it's cruise height of 25,000 feet @ 215 knots was today's strong southerly headwinds at this altitude possibly coupled with an incorrect propeller blade pitch (propeller condition) setting! Just in case anybody is interested because of how unusual this is or worried because of the loud and sometimes waiver-like sound ... This is what was responsible for what was heard.
Last edited by Tonx; 11-28-2015 at 08:44. Reason: Inbound Prestwick / EGPK added.
As the creator of this thread may I thank the Admin Staff of the Aerodrome for it's recent upgrade within the UK Wing.
What an excellent start to December 2015: The conversion of this thread into a Sticky.
As the saying goes this thread which began life on March 5th 2015 has enjoyed going from strength to strength ever since. May I continue to encourage the level and quality of contributions posted within this thread whichever game (WW1 / WGF or WW2 / WGS) they relate to.
Events-wise should anybody wish to spend December 6th 2015 in Halesowen (West Midlands) then see the Event Thread created in UK Wing by GM Simon - Maverick. A promising day of WGF action sounds as if it is on the cards. Drive time from Derby is approximately one hour. Drive time from Chesterfield estimated at 90 minutes whereas from Buxton in the north of the county expect a drive time of around two hours.
The next major event to be taking place at a nearby location (confirmed) is Hammerhead 2016 at Newark Show Ground. The event which is scheduled to be held on March 5th 2016 takes place in the same location as Hammerhead 2015: Brunel Building. Expect WGF / WGS and Sails. Drive-time from Derby is just under one hour: A52 -> A46 -> A17 for less than a mile and you are there. From Chesterfield follow the A57 direct to Newark cross-country through Sherwood Forest and via Ollerton with a drive-time of roughly one hour.
Following Hammerhead 2016 comes WMMS 2016 on March 13th 2016 which takes place near Wolverhampton. Again see the Event Thread which will be appearing in UK Wing for more information with drive-times to this event being roughly the same as the Halesowen estimates.
Cheers Everyone
It is January 2016 and as can be expected after Christmas things in the east midlands specifically in Derbyshire have gone quiet. That being said there has been an exciting new development which has reached my ears regarding the Partizan Newark event which will be held on May 22nd 2016 over in Nottinghamshire. More TBA WATCH THIS SPACE!
The next big event as mentioned in the post above is again at the Newark Showground - Hammerhead 2016 which takes place on March 5th 2016. Which I guess is not all that far away: See above for details.
FLGS-wise the region continues to be served by Caliver Books Ltd up in Eastwood (Nottingham) and to the west Spirit Games is located in Burton upon Trent which is ten minutes away down the A38 from Derby. Galactic Models in Derby City Centre has decided that in terms of becoming a stockist that Magic and X-Wing are more their cup of tea. This is therefore the last time they will receive a mention in this Sticky.
AA continues to cater for all of our gaming needs with some highly recommended additional accessories also available too such as custom cockpits - which I for one am extremely interested in!
Like mentioned it has been a quiet January which has not really been helped by my ongoing stay in rehab. However all being well this looks set to come to an end around the same time as the Hammerhead event is being held in Newark. For February I will also think of some additional mini-enhancements which this Sticky could be assisted with from WW1 (need assistance please) and WW2 for which I'll hit my book collection!
Last edited by Tonx; 01-24-2016 at 11:02. Reason: Creation of a JAN 2016 Slot.
FEBRUARY 2016 has seen confirmation that the Aerodrome will be present at Partizan Newark which is being held on May 22nd 2016. As I am writing this Hammerhead 2016 at the same location is barely a fortnight away on March 5th 2016.
This month has been quiet again for WGF and WGS in Derbyshire ... But if you are into post-war aviation and ambitious WGS branch-outs a certain XM595 has helped create quite a noise ready for Spring 2016! XM595 is indeed directly related to XH560 in being a WGS-compatible Avro Vulcan B.2 and it was declared Game Ready on February 20th 2016.
Yours Truly commencing a WGF Playing Career has also been creating some positive noise around the Aerodrome from this direction. This now means that I play both versions of the game and am documenting the early / learning stages of this brand new direction in the WW1 Missions thread Circuits and Bumps II. Though not overly role-play like the thread follows the flying career of Flying Officer 2493889 Dunkin / B from his conscription sign-up and selection for the RFC through training at RFC Halton. But a discovery about his past soon puts him on a train to Boscombe Down where he will begin to fly and evaluate Central Powers as well as Entente aircraft types. From this point onwards the writing could like Circuits and Bumps I become a little more flight instructor-like ... But Dunkin first has to survive his first sortie in a captured Albatros D.Va when he is attacked by an Entente Sopwith Camel which doesn't realise that his flight is a friendly from Boscombe Down: This enables the shooting to begin far sooner than it did in C & B I.
There have been no events or Public Demonstration Days to report for this month. In fact due to heavily increased activities over at Chopper Squad (work) Wings of Glory activity has had to take a hit for now. I am currently in the process of encouraging two potential Members to join up - one from Derbyshire who has been instrumental to my decision to play WGF and the other is a member of Chopper Squad whose interested in the game and plays occasionally being from Scotland.
Finally I was discharged from Rehab in early February 2016 and was glad to be out and able to put my Wings of Glory playing career back to rights. Though when this happened even I wasn't expecting the WGF change in direction to occur!

For MARCH 2016 - 279 Air Sea Rescue Squadron Supermarine Spitfire Mk II - Update ...
Also the latest on up and coming events and coverage of Hammerhead 2016.
Finally a friendly face you may recognise + a colleague from Chopper Squad may be appearing on The One Show ... More details to follow.

Hi Tonx,
Not sure that your info's quite right?
I checked the Forum and UK wing info,
and the rather 'aged' wing / flight details for UK
there is / was a Derbyshire flight listed
granted no sqn leader detailed...
and about 10 members are listed (not sure how current this list is)?
Neither you or I are listed so expect that the details have not been updated in a while...?
Begs the question...
What is the point of having the information if it is not updated?
But then, it need's an Admin Staff Officer to do that, who's willing to maintain the info...
has access to the system to be able to make updates and has the time to check with all
the Wings / Sqn / Flights etc, relying on each individual CO to know each squadron's info...
A topic for another ADMIN conversation perhaps~
probably not later than October 1/2 get together?
Just a friendly 'heads up'
hope to see you at a show soon.
Simon
Maverick
I update once a year. In between times the sticky lists each new pilot as they join. We are the only Wing who keeps a list as far as I know other than Italy and I'm not sure if that is still active.

Thank you for the above clarification Sir. May I ask what * and p both mean please? I notice that I am down as *
May I also ask Mike (OldGuy59) for a Derbyshire Flight signature strip / banner if he is happy to create one or does that request have to go to you first?
To answers with one e-mail....

see you at hammerhead

Noted Sir....

That is just to indicate if someone has answered my Wingman request. P is pending. * is affirmative.
I am happy to let anyone who has joined have a County strip Barney. The only proviso is that the Oberst restricts them to paid up members.
One correction to the earlier post by Mav. he mentioned a Derbyshire Squadron Leader not being listed. It would of course be a Flight Leader if there were enough active members to justify one, and we had a member there who had shown commitment, over a period of time, to justify his Squadron Leader submitting his name to myself and the Administration team for ratification.
Rob.
"Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death."
Now who is the Squadron leader for the Derbyshire Flight Rob?
See you on the Dark Side......
Thank you Sir - as you may have noticed I reinstated my Gold Membership instead of paying up my Silver for next month so I am able to display a County Banner.
Grateful for * / p clarification and when it comes to Derbyshire Flight Leader I think I know which Member would have been under consideration. If it is who I think it is I hope he is well as the last we heard he too had been in hospital.
I know who else may make an excellent Derbyshire Flight Leader should Choice 1 not wish to take up position. Though I will suggest this Member through the correct channels if the need arises
Don't worry yourself about it Barney, it is in good hands, should there ever be enough active members of the Derbyshire Flight, and a general regular club meet established again somewhere.
Rob.
"Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death."
This as you can imagine I would be well up for although non-Aerodrome Member Richard Seville has put me back in touch with Galactic Models. Our running joke is that as soon as I have obtained my first Airco DH.4 he and I will head down there on Sunday afternoon(s) for a game or two. They no longer run Wednesday nights.
Still not a stockist either but let us head down there first of all and get things running again. Shop only stays open by request / ring in advance so it sounds like our faithful X-Wing Friends and George / Warhammer 40K players may not be there. However if we get there and it's crawling with Magic players making the racket they are known to it's an abort & play back at my place.
That Barney reminds me of a friend I had working for the RAC. Gets a call from some Australian tourist one evening. "Where exactly are you sir".
"Looks like a place called loobaroo", comes back the answer.
Rob.
"Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death."
I always tease Barn about his next run to Loogaborooga. Because he is always going to Loughborough for something or other. It was bombed in 1916 by a stray German Zeppelin - bombs falling roughly where his friend now runs his own barbers shop.
As for the rest of this thread ... BLIMEY RILEY you could make a best-seller out of this!!! A roller coaster of a ride through turbulence and dissent. With Stukas included. Just the occasional swearing and no bad taste. More Stukas. Heroic squadrons and evil villains and Oh ... Look at the grumpy b*****d! (Barn you borrowed that line from Sparkhouse - Carol says that to Andrew during Episode 3!) Glad everybody survived anyway
BTW - Come to think of it I remember one of our conversations beginning with I was in the right effing mood today to go into town and buy a filthy great German bomber! Actual quote - from early November time ...
You have nailed it Danielle.
Loughborough was indeed the place. It helps to know that becaose it was such a long name, a lot of roadsigns were shortened to read Lough'bro.
Rob.
"Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death."
I DON'T BELIEVE IT ...
BUSTED!
For the second time in one day! Come to think of it you now have two different perspectives on that German bomber (Stuka) episode ... But I still DON'T BELIEVE IT - first the Varnished Vulcan now this!!!
By the way - Nanpantan: You need to lose a pan and you have indeed got a village to the west of Lufbra. Osgathorpe has got to be my favourite one around here - west of East Midlands Airport where I am off to now in fact ...
Long town names? Really?
We got one: SZCZEBRZESZYN.
So easy to read and pronounce, quite short and famous because of the saying: W SZCZEBRZESZYNIE CHRZĄSZCZ BRZMI W TRZCINIE.
If you read this properly, you may apply for Polish passport succesfully.
"We do not stop playing when we get old, but we get old when we stop playing."
Just got short stocky names here, just like the Bretons Kernascleden is about the longest name locally but we do have a village called Cornhospital

Oh we got some nice ones too:
