Thread: Building Bomber Boxes : )

  1. #1

Default Building Bomber Boxes : )

Received this nose art tool box from a friend over the holidays . . . then the bombers arrived, hmm what to do?

Found two blank black "canvases" at the hardware store, hmm one for B-17's, one for British Bombers, one for B-24's : )

Now for some art turned stickers . . . added a few spray coats of gloss lacquer

Now for an evening with the scissors . . .

And some sorting out the insides, all have a lift out tool tray and room for 6-9 bombers, cards, stands, etc. Maybe a Quonset hut damage holder ( http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...hlight=quonset). . . . rust never sleeps . .

I love where this is going, David! When I saw the tagline, I was expecting masses of models in formation on a tabletop. But THIS is equally as cool - I really like these sorts of add-ons to a game. I can't wait to see your spiffing up of the extra boxes...

    All the best,
    Matt

Wonderful treatment of the outside - like the others, I'm equally excited to be inspired by what you do to the inside...!

So it's tomorrow already! I cut foam board trays and located short bomber pegs to anchor the bombers in place.

After test spacing the pegs are glued into holes, a spacer bit is shaped and glued in place

Here they are, 3 dam busters in place

Top tray behind, holds the other 3

    First tray in the box

    Second tray in the box

Dam maps and instructions tucked into the back

Tool tray holds the bits . . .

    Bases and cards . . .

Same was done for the Fortress and Liberator boxes. A trip to the local Warbird Museum will provide 3 "Remove Before Flight" key rings for the latches and we are ready for action in style! Cheers!

Impressive, David. But what are you doing up? I have to go to work at this ungodly hour, and you're 3 time zones earlier than me!

They look as if the boxes were tailor made for the job Dave. I never envisaged using the tool trays in boxes for that. i usually take them out and use for odds and sods in the workshop.

Very nice job (as usual). I have one of the Nose Art B-17 (Yankee Lady) box. Never thought to use in such a way.

Now, a Gotha box - THAT I'd like to see!

These turned out wonderfully, Dave! Like Rob, I'm pleasantly surprised that the tray accepts the cards and stands so easily. It has caused me to rethink using something like this.
I really like your "pegging" them to keep them from wandering around during transport.

    Thanks for the inspiration!
    All the best,
    Matt

Found at most air museums and even on line, these tags add the final touch to the bomber box program . . .

    Now about those Staakens . . . .

    What a great touch, Dave!

Really adds an apropos finish to the box And I love the picture on the inside of the Lanc box - are those guardian angels 'helping' the plane whose engine is ablaze? Where did you find it?

    Wonderful work, as always.

Very cool images, Dave. The artist's name is Glen Angus (perhaps you already know this...) - he passed away in 2007, but he did a bunch of really neat paintings. Thanks for the tip on where to find these pictures. They work so well on your bomber boxes!

    All the best,
    Matt
