Thread: Greetings!

    Default Greetings!

I just joined Aerodrome yesterday, and I take it that the protocal is to introduce one's self. So here goes:

After months of sitting on the fence, I finally took the plunge and purchased some Wings of Glory WWI airplanes (and one duel pack). Decades ago, I played TSR's Dawn Patrol , but that never really got off the ground (sorry for the pun) as I found the game a bit too fiddly.

Fast forwarding to today, I'm the father of five budding gamers (aged 5-12). I'm always on the lookout for something to play with them. We've tried a lot - from Risk to Axis and Allies to Memor '44 to Conflict of Heroes. With the proper teammates, even the little ones can get into the action. But I kept looking for a game that was more manageable for our group - something smaller scale. What could be smaller scale than a single aircraft (or two) per player?

I tried dusting off Dawn Patrol, but still couldn't get it to work for us.
After reading and reading the WoG rules (basic), it seemed to hit the spot perfectly.

I've yet to play - my WoG order is still in transit. But I (we) can't wait. I'm sure it will be a hit.

Finally - if I may - is anyone aware of stores here in northern NJ (Bergen County) that carry Wings of Glory products? I've only been able to find them on the Internet.

    Thank you!

    Cheers!

    Hello James, and welcome!

Great to hear that you've a "homegrown" squadron all kitted up and ready to fly... I think you'll find this game to be a great time (and a little addictive... or maybe that's just my problem?) The Duel Packs are a great way to jump in; two reasonably balanced kites and a solid introduction to the rules. If your initial steps are successful, I would suggest expanding your collection with the Rules and Accessories Pack (RAP)... expanded rules and all of the damage cards, tokens/counters, etc. you'll need to play.

I'm not familiar with NJ retailers (my apologies), but the Aerodrome Store (http://www.aerodromeaccessories.com/) is a great place to pick up miniatures, the odd Duel Pack, and the RAP (only WGS at this point).

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions as you're working your way through the rules... this community is wonderfully knowledgeable and more than willing to help.

    Thank you both.
Christopher - I actually ordered all my WoG stuff from Aerodrome - thank you.
Since they didn't carry the RAP I shall need to pick that up elsewhere in the near future.

Welcome! I'm in South Jersey outside of Philly. Does Fantasy Games & Hobbies carry them? As for the game - my 10 year old loves it! He can't get enough and the 7 year old doesn't want to fly the planes yet (well, does and doesn't), but she enjoys drawing the damage chits.

I hope they enjoy it! As a total aside - not WoG related - Ticket to Ride is a great game for gamers and young ones can play easily as well.

Welcome James, from Middlesex in the U.K.

I'm sure your young pilots will soon be blasting you out of the skies, as all children everywhere seem apt to do to adults!

Hi James. I can now officially welcome you on behalf of the Squadrons based in the U.K.
The best thing about Wings is that it is easy to learn, quick to set out and take down, and can be transported easily when going on holidays for those rainy days to entertain bored kids.
Enjoy your kids whilst you can, but be prepared to get shot down a lot.

You'll have a great time with the game and the website, James! They both are a ton of fun, and there's lots to see here that you can use to complicate the game (as needs be). Have fun with you "automatic squadron" - it will be a blast.

    All the best,
    Matt

G'day James & welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.

This is a great place to learn all you will need to know about this great game.
Good to hear you already have your own Squadron.
One small piece of advice! Beware of the offspring coming out of the Sun on your 6.

Obviously I don't have a clue where to buy WoG-stuff i NJ but I can say that though I'm living in Sweden I buy all my stuff at the Aerodrome store.
It's cheeper, faster and have a lot of "extras" that is just great.

So James - welcome to the 'drome from Sweden,

Have fun as you explore the forum, James - it's a great place to stumble around and find all sorts of things. Nice that you have a ready-made group to fly with, eh?!

    All the best,
    Matt

Welcome from Philly. Your best bet is to buy online. I haven't found many stores anywhere in PA or NJ. I've mentioned it to a few and some showed a little interest but that was years ago and I haven't seen anything yet. Good luck the duel pack is the equivalent of a gateway drug. I only wanted the duel pack to play with a friend of mine, then my 10 year-old liked it and there has been no turning back. I swore I wouldn't get involved with WGS, but alas I couldn't resist and my collection grows and grows to the constant annoyance to my wife. I am running out of room and excuses for all the planes I now have.
