Default WW1 or WW2 and why?

    Hi everyone,
I was just wondering which version of WOG you prefer and why? I prefer WW1 because Ares seems to be producing more of the WW1 version, because the planes in my mind are all very different appearing and feeling (not a big fan of WW2 planes), and because I really like all of the very different liveries of planes in WW1 whereas in WW2 all of the planes seem very standard with not much defining a single pilot apart from maybe a squadron marking. I do really like the damage system used in WW2 though with chits and different combos for all the different planes.

    G'day Elijah!
Well I started off with WW1 because that is my main interest historically. My dad was an original Anzac.
However I have since got into WW2 as well due to Carl-Brisgamers efforts at Cancon a few years ago & I must say I like that too. Only fly Pacific War Vs Japan.

I still prefer the WW1 system & the quirky aircraft & colourful German colour schemes but both systems are good.

Both. But, if necessary to choose, WW1 - it's system in WoG is more maneuverable.

I started with WWI back in the days of Nexus... all we had was WWI and the out-of-the-box friendliness of this game was an immediate draw. I've collected WW2 miniatures the last several years, as well, but play WGF far more regularly... no real reason, however. I like them both.

I too started with WWI back in the days of Nexus... when it was Wings of War and WWI was all they did but the period held the childhood fascination for me, the rules were simple, models were cheap & beautifully crafted, as were the cards & contents of the various box sets and people laughed when they played - what more could you wish for !
When WW2 came out I was so disappointed with the 1/200 scale that I never got into it and haven't since.

Of the two, I greatly prefer WoW/WGF over DoW/WGS. I feel the gaming engine translates the feel of WW1 air combat better than WW2. That said, I certainly play WGS (and have enough planes in the
    hanger(s) to prove it ).

WWI for me - like Dave the period was a childhood fascination (I remember my school library had a series of WWI volumes illustrated with colour plates of various aircraft), and I was drawn to WoW as a set of rules that are quick and easy to play on a fairly small area - unlike the larger scale games of yesteryear!

I started this game playing the WWII version since I had a great interest in the period growing up. When I came to this site it opened my eyes to the WWI history and I found myself just as interested in the Great War. I have planes for both, and I like playing both. I don't really have a favourite yet.

I like both versions, but prefer WGS for the more interesting warfare history.

I can only say WW1. For the obvious reason that I have not tested WW2 (something that I want to do some day)
I love the aircrafts of the great war. They are just so beautiful and personal (well most of them anyway )

I love the WWI planes and their very different maneuverability between them. WW2 has a very different feel as it should. I love them both and all the planes but play WWI 95%. I will definitely try this year to get more WW2 games in.

I played WW1 exclusively until about two years ago, but am now a convert to WW2 for many of the reasons already given. I think WW1 is a good starting off point, but WW2 has a special ambiance all of its own.

I play WW1 exclusively. I have found I really enjoy the game mechanism of three cards chosen in advance, the colourful aircraft of wildly different manoeuvre characteristics, the whole "Romance" thing of Knights of the Air (including my own colours on my own personal kite), and of course the friendly attitude of the players of the game, who all seem to share the same goals as myself. I have amassed a frighteningly large collection of planes.

I have played WW2, just on one day, a while ago, and I just didn't seem to get on with it, and with my falling for WGF in such a big way, I ruled out getting into WGS. Completely. Absolutely.

Now, however, there seem to be ominous dark clouds on the horizon.......................

I started with WGF primarly, but WGS system was slowly growing on me through the years and if I have to say wnich of the two I personally prefer it would be WGS for just one reason: a better control of a plane I fly and lesser random factor in maneuvering. You may adjust your speed and have just one card ahead to plan. Also when you find yourself in a tailing position, a chased opponent is in a real fix; shaking of a taling plane is sometimes difficult.
And your guns never jam which may be sooo frustrating in WGF!

WWII. I prefer WWII history as it's where my grandfather served. However, I played the WWI version the very first time, and promptly went home and put the game on my Christmas list. I figured that WWII would be similar so I asked for (and got) the Starter Deluxe from Wings of Glory.

WWI, my dad when I was a kid of 10, made WWII models (He served in the Navy in WWII on the aircraft carrier Bataan), and when I saw the first WW1 airplanes I fell in love with them. I guess climbing into a plane made of wood and cloth and held together with wires just sounds crazy and then go off and fight in them, MAN that took GUTS. Love WW1 flyers and planes.

Seriously? My grandfather was a Lt on CVL-29!!!!! Despite being "too old" when the war broke out (he was Indiana class of '33), he got them to let him be in charge Physical Activity on the carrier. He told me a lot of stories about losing basketballs over the side and having to rig a lot of nettings.

His AA post was at the extreme right of this picture. This always fascinated me.

I am devoted to WWI as, since I was a child, I always liked the pioneering and "romantic" aspects of the early stages of aviation and its men.

Those colorful and individualized aircraft help dropping into the role of the pilots and, in my opinion and taste, I rather prefer dealing with jams than being sprayed in a couple of bursts (well, not counting the boom card).
More, I like the different characteristics of the several flying machines that compel players to fly these in distinct manners.

Last but not least, I DO love SPADs.

Only WW2 for me. My grandfather flew a P-40 and a Corsair in the pacific plus the history of WW2 has always fascinated me much more than WW1. I did own the Dr. 1 vs Sopwith duel pack and my sister of all people loved playing that with me. Its obvious that the WW2 players are in the minority and I really hope Ares start putting the same amount of attention into WGS than they do with WGF. In saying that this year is looking bright.

    WW2 all the way

Do you play with planes painted in his honor? You have the paint schemes?

    -----------
Rob, you have your Dad's ships colour's too? Maybe I'll have to have everyone paint my planes in their father/grandfather's uncle's honor's.
My great-uncle said he flew 60 missions in the Pacific, all behind a desk.

HMS Biter was a Royal Navy escort carrier during the Second World War. She was laid down as a merchant ship at the Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Company yard at Chester, Pennsylvania. Wikipedia That's right across the river. (For those not current on USA geography, the Delaware River divides NJ & Philly. I live on the NJ side of the River, 8 miles from Philly. The Battleship New Jersey is parked on our side of the river, near the Camden Shipyards, while the Philadelphia Naval Yards are on the other side (but South of the city, as the river bends around Philly), then the airport, then the Chester Shipyards. )

I would love to do that but I'm a terrible painter. I couldn't even change the X on my 109 into a swastika with a fine tip sharpie. Shaky hand syndrome even though I'm only 28 haha

This question has been asked many times but all answer. Myself I started with WWI and now have all mini's (WWI & WWII). I like WWI because it is slower to play but I have played WWII more. I love the system and always have a great time playing either game.

I play WWI a lot but think I should be doing WW2 more. My dad was on the USS San Diego CL53, Atlanta class anit-aircraft cruiser. This ship unofficially was only 2nd to the Enterprise in battle honors. I say unofficially as a couple didn't get awarded as the war ended and they were sent home in a hurry. The San Diego was given the honor to lead the US fleet into Japan after the surrender announcement. (They thought it was a trap and went in under battle readiness.) The Japanese delegation came out and surrendered on the San Diego. A few days later the USS Missouri was due in with MacArthur and all the big wigs for the official surrender, so the San Diego was sent home before the battleship arrived.

So I should be playing WW2 Pacific. It will happen very soon...

WW1, because to be blunt: The system doesn't work for WW2.

And I have no former-military types in my bloodline -- I come from a long line of 4Fs and People In Important Industries.

For me I like both, but I find WW1 is more of a social game, whereas WW2 is hardcore gaming and you have to be on your toes. So with the group I game with we play more WW1 and I and a couple of other have irregular WW2 games on a non games day.
