    Hi Zoe,
A few of my club will be at CANCON 2015. They are playing ancients. Look for their dark blue NWS shirts. Hope to get there maybe next year for WOG game with you. Hope all goes well.

After an unsuccessful attempt to join in the demo game on the Saturday (Mrs Fish insisted on taking the Little Fish off to lunch) we had our chance on the Sunday.

Zoe and her crew ran, as ever, a really friendly participation game and were very generous with their time, toys and expertise allowing each player to select from their huge collection of aircraft. I asked Little Fish the Elder which aeroplane he fancied and to my surprise he picked the Hans-Brandenburg floatplane, as this was a two seater he decreed himself the observer, his little brother the pilot and myself the ‘helper’.

The game itself attracted nearly a dozen participants, a majority of which ranged in ages eight to 12, all of which augers well for the future of the hobby. Most of these chaps (it was an all-male affair) had some familiarity with the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game so the learning curve wasn’t too steep. Zoe also gave a very brief description of each aircraft before the game progressed so the players had a basic idea about the capabilities of each machine on the table as well as its place in history. It was very informative to learn that the Fokker DVII is the only aircraft ever specifically mentioned in a peace treaty?

As the game progressed the pilot (aged two) delegated more and more responsibility to the helper and wandered off to inspect other tables with his mother. This left the observer and myself to fend off the best the Triple Entente could offer. We managed to get about a dozen hit cards on a Spad XII piloted by the luckiest ten year old in the skies (he was still in the air after receiving his 2oth damage card) and cause a bit of consternation to a Sopwith Snipe with minimal damage to ourselves, but could not be there for the end of the game as Mrs Fish again insisted on whisking the Little Fish away for lunch. Nevermind, all good fun and the boys will be back for more next year (or Wintercon if it’s on in 2015).

Thanks to Zoe and her crew for running another great demo game!

When the Fokker D.VII appeared on the Western Front in April 1918, Allied pilots at first underestimated the new fighter because of its squarish, ungainly appearance, but quickly revised their view. The D.VII's unique ability to seemingly "hang on its propeller," and fire into the unprotected underside of enemy aircraft made it a highly feared combat opponent. The Armistice agreement requirement specifically demanding that all Fokker D.VIIs be immediately surrendered attested to the general high regard for the airplane.
