HOT & SPICY PARTY MIX
Original Ingredients:
1/2 cup Butter or Margarine 3/8 Tsp Tabasco sauce (1/4 *)
1 1/4 Tsp Salt 3 Cups Cheerios
2 Tsp Garlic powder* 3 Cups Pretzels (1 to 1 1/2*)
2 Tsp Onion powder* 3 Cups Shreddies
1 Tsp Chili powder* 2 Cups Peanuts
8 Tsp Worcestershire sauce (4 1/2*)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
2. Heat butter in sauce pan until melted, stir in seasoning and remove from heat.
3. Mix cheerios, pretzels, shreddies & peanuts in a large roaster or cake pan (or a disposable aluminum roasting pan). Pour spice-butter mixture over top and stir well.
4. Heat in oven for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
Alternate Ingredients:
Half or reduce all marked "*" ingredients for less spicy, or add more to taste.
Caution: Watch the Salt - salt in recipe, salted nuts, salted pretzels, salt on the Cheese things = very SALTY stuff! Try it without salt, and use unsalted nuts.
Use "Life" or "Crispex" cereal instead of Shreddies.
Use Almonds or Cashews with or instead of peanuts. Or mixed nuts.
Add Cheddar Cheese Nips, cheese "Goldfish", or cheese flavoured "Ritz Bits."
Note: I have made many variations on this recipe, including using a Tbsp measure for the spices rather than a Tsp measure.
this year, I used unsalted butter, and did not add the indicated salt. I used three cups of Deluxe Mixed Nuts (salted) and one cup of baking Almonds (unsalted), and I added 4 Cups of Cheese Nips. I used Crispex, not Shreddies.
Also, I have started experimenting with the heat. This year, for extra bit, I used Srirracha sauce instead of Tabasco (reduces the vinegar flavour with a bit more heat), and I used Chipotle Chili powder instead of plain chili powder (adds a bit more heat, and a nice smokey flavour).
Oh! And I used 1/2 bacon fat and butter. Extra crispy, not really a bacon flavor, but that might be hidden by the Chipotle.
My Recipe (Double Batch):
1/2 Cup Butter
1/2 Cup Bacon Fat
1 Tsp Sriracha sauce
2 Tbsp Garlic powder
2 Tbsp Onion powder
1 Tbsp Chipotle Chilli powder
16 Tsp Worcestershire sauce
6 Cups Cheerios
6 Cups Pretzels (mini twists)
6 Cups Crispex
4 Cups Cheese Nips
3 Cups Deluxe Mixed Nuts
1 Cup Bakers Almonds
I only make this at Christmas time, or I'd weigh 25 stone (350 lbs).
And this year, I'm doing up Chocolate covered Peanut Butter Balls. Recipe is in a book.
