Thread: Second Epiphany - The Universal Diceless Solo Deck

Default Second Epiphany - The Universal Diceless Solo Deck

    Some things are strange.

    They are.

I've been thinking about the Universal Diceless Solo Chart for WW1 for months now.
I've tried several different things - even those that worked were clumsy and hard to master.

Then it came to me. In a wave that made all the sense.

Yesterday there was a strike in the Lisbon subway. I went to and came back from work by bus.
People tend to become less and less civilized during these events. Bus completely filled up. People trying to get inside. Squeezing each other. I was trying to ignore them. I gave my seat to an old lady and she thanked me and offered a compliment that it is a common Portuguese expression. She said: "You're a card out of the deck", that means that I was a rare or unique person. And then it hit me! Epiphany!

    I could have kissed her!

I can now announce that I have created an Universal Diceless Solo Deck for Wings of Glory WW1.

    I'll sketch it this weekend!
    I need you Mike.

    Thanks, my friends!
I hope I can finish it until Christmas so that it can be my Christmas gift to everyone at the 'Drome.

    Joaquim / Mike (hopefully),

Thank you for this early Christmas present! The Universal Diceless Solo Deck for Wings of Glory WW1 would be a great gift to us all.

Please accept my encouragement to get this done.

Thank you and please keep us updated once the Aerodrome becomes available again after the server maintenance!

    Yeah,
This evening, I just finished my last project for my fall semester college course. Hopefully, my last until Jan cranks up again. And if I can get some free time, the Ju-52s and Ju-88s will get done, along with a few custom B-17s. I have a backlog of custom cards to do, and a map for the HMS Glorious (cause the Ares Coast map doesn't have enough water on it, go figure!). And Christmas is Family time, and I have a list of baking that I put on hold for exams.

What's another project on the pile? If I can borrow the base graphics from the WWII version, it will take a day or less, perhaps.

Not that I wish to stifle or limit any genius, Joaquim. Send me your drafts, and I'll have at them.

    Thanks, Mike.
    You are a true gentleman.

But I'm afraid that this is a different animal altogether.
Not that you won't like it, but the USC for WW2 won't work here. Sorry.
A completely different concept, I'm afraid.

That would be a simple but smart solution Quim. A true master mind must stand behind it...

    Cheers for Mike the "Multi-tasker"!

Thank you for taking on the project despite your busy schedule.

Shortly Aerodrome will go offline due to the scheduled maintenance cycle. See you all on the other side.

Thank you and happy holidays to everyone.

Yesterday I've tested the Universal Diceless Solo Decks in two games and they not only worked very well as they are very fast to use. Andy will love them since playing with multiple planes in a solo scenario is something that takes him too much time.

Today and tomorrow I'll put them in page format so that I can scan them and put them here. Then hopefully Mike will work his magic with them.

    My usual:

    HOT & SPICY PARTY MIX

    Original Ingredients:

1/2 cup Butter or Margarine 3/8 Tsp Tabasco sauce (1/4 *)
    1 1/4 Tsp Salt 3 Cups Cheerios
    2 Tsp Garlic powder* 3 Cups Pretzels (1 to 1 1/2*)
2 Tsp Onion powder* 3 Cups Shreddies
1 Tsp Chili powder* 2 Cups Peanuts
    8 Tsp Worcestershire sauce (4 1/2*)

    Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
    2. Heat butter in sauce pan until melted, stir in seasoning and remove from heat.
    3. Mix cheerios, pretzels, shreddies & peanuts in a large roaster or cake pan (or a disposable aluminum roasting pan). Pour spice-butter mixture over top and stir well.
    4. Heat in oven for one hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

    Alternate Ingredients:

Half or reduce all marked "*" ingredients for less spicy, or add more to taste.

Caution: Watch the Salt - salt in recipe, salted nuts, salted pretzels, salt on the Cheese things = very SALTY stuff! Try it without salt, and use unsalted nuts.

Use "Life" or "Crispex" cereal instead of Shreddies.

Use Almonds or Cashews with or instead of peanuts. Or mixed nuts.

Add Cheddar Cheese Nips, cheese "Goldfish", or cheese flavoured "Ritz Bits."

Note: I have made many variations on this recipe, including using a Tbsp measure for the spices rather than a Tsp measure.
this year, I used unsalted butter, and did not add the indicated salt. I used three cups of Deluxe Mixed Nuts (salted) and one cup of baking Almonds (unsalted), and I added 4 Cups of Cheese Nips. I used Crispex, not Shreddies.
Also, I have started experimenting with the heat. This year, for extra bit, I used Srirracha sauce instead of Tabasco (reduces the vinegar flavour with a bit more heat), and I used Chipotle Chili powder instead of plain chili powder (adds a bit more heat, and a nice smokey flavour).
Oh! And I used 1/2 bacon fat and butter. Extra crispy, not really a bacon flavor, but that might be hidden by the Chipotle.

    My Recipe (Double Batch):
    1/2 Cup Butter
    1/2 Cup Bacon Fat
    1 Tsp Sriracha sauce
    2 Tbsp Garlic powder
    2 Tbsp Onion powder
    1 Tbsp Chipotle Chilli powder
    16 Tsp Worcestershire sauce

    6 Cups Cheerios
    6 Cups Pretzels (mini twists)
    6 Cups Crispex
    4 Cups Cheese Nips
    3 Cups Deluxe Mixed Nuts
    1 Cup Bakers Almonds

I only make this at Christmas time, or I'd weigh 25 stone (350 lbs).

And this year, I'm doing up Chocolate covered Peanut Butter Balls. Recipe is in a book.

    Joaquim / Mike,

On behalf of myself, and I am sure many WoG players out in the community, let me express my appreciation for your efforts to develop the WW2 and WW1 solo play systems.

I am already playing the WW2 system and I look forward to trying the WW1 one soon.

Thank you both for such excellent work.

So here they are. The Decks for the Universal Diceless WW1 Solo Deck.

Two things before I put them here.
One. I must give my thanks to several fellow members that in one way or another contributed to these decks:

Richard Bradley (Herkybird) - The creator of the initial Solo Charts, from where I derived my Advanced Solo Charts and then my 2nd Generation Solo Charts that now derived again to the Universal Diceless WW1 Solo Deck. Thanks Richard.

Mike (OldGuy59) - Who took his time to make a beautiful chart for my WW2 Universal Solo Chart and I hope to do the same for these Decks. Thanks once again, Mike.

Peter (Teaticket) - Who helped me to create and put into digital charts the 2nd Generation Solo Charts, pushing me to do better and better. Thanks, Peter.

The Flyboys from the Solo Campaigns - Be it Over the Trenches or Fire in the Skies, that accepted, used, gave their opinion about the charts I made. I must nominate some of them, trying not to forget anyone:

The ubiquitous FO Kyte (Rob) always with a helping word and ready to try another game, another idea.

The indefatigable Nightbomber (Andrzej) who's friendship and warmth are becoming legendary.

The golden-words-reporting Skafloc (Neal) with his absolute zeal in wrapping our AAR's.

The combative Marechallannes (Sven) always capable of give his clear report.

The glorious gully_raker (Barry) from Down Under, always with a kind sentence.

The good humored tikkifriend (Paul) with his wonderful AAR's since the beginning of Over the Trenches.

The constant Flash (Dave) taking care of key and lock.

The young Barkmann (Nicolas) a gust of fresh air and friendship from another Portuguese land.

The very missed Watchdog (Jan) that I hope to meet this year(?).

    Thank you Flyboys.

And of course, last but not least, two people who are always to praise, Zoe Brain, for her continuous help. Thanks Zoe. And Oberst Hajj (Keith) without whom we wouldn't all be here. Thanks Commander Keith!

And now Two. The rules of how to use the decks.

    The Decks are three:
Red Deck (Deck One) with 24 cards and is the deck to use when the player's plane is closing at less than one ruler of distance.
Orange Deck (Deck Two) with 32 cards and is the deck to use when the player's plane is closing at more than one ruler of distance.
Green Deck (Deck Three) with 32 cards and is the deck to use when the player's plane is moving away.

These decks all work in the same way.
    Shuffle them in separate.
Use the deck that matches the position of the player's plane in relation to the AI plane.
The back of the cards have the name of the deck, number and the quadrant area where the player's plane is.
You must take one card at the time until you see one with the right quadrant. Use that card.
The topmost group of maneuvers, without any letter above it is the maneuvers to use unless the AI plane uses a deck that is detailed with the maneuver letter in the card. In that case use that set of maneuvers.
If a player's plane is moving into another quadrant area, use that quadrant area to choose a maneuver from.

Note: The decks I've uploaded are scratchbuilt decks. I'm putting all my trust and faith in Mike's hands to have something prettier to play with.

Do we want the cards laid out so that the backs are attached to the fronts on one side for single-sided, single-page printing, or printed back and front for two-sided, single-page printing?

Are we going to put the cards in sleeves, or just back-glue them?

This makes a difference in what I do for the graphics and layout.

    And, Joaquim...

Not as nice as a single page chart.

I'm sorry for not being able to make them a single page chart. Too many sets of maneuvers... I did try.
But this is a game with cards for maneuvers, cards for damage... I thought that the solo decks had the same feeling...

As it is very important that back and front match in each card, they should be printed in a single page and then glued together.
Sleeving them is optional, I guess.

Let me offer my thanks to Joaquim and team for another outstanding effort!

In terms of the formatting/printing of these decks this would be my preference:

Setup the layout of the cards so that both the front and back of the card can be printed on a single side of a sheet of paper.

My thoughts here are that not everyone may have a duplex capable printer (i.e the ability to print on both the front and back of a single sheet of paper) and I would think it would be easier to cut out the front / back of the card, fold it over, and then sleeve it. I think that gluing just adds an extra complexity for little gain.

Be that as it may I accept whatever format the designers choose to produce the decks as. I am just grateful to have the system.

    Many thanks.

I'm a fan of easy. If the fronts & backs are connected, I don't need to line anything up when I print... I can cut, fold, and sleeve.

But I'll take them any way I can. Thanks for all the work!
