Thread: What is the largest single game you have participated in?

  1. #1

Default What is the largest single game you have participated in?

I was surveying my collection last night and with the latest series I will have over 110 individual planes as I have 1 of each. Do I need this many, of course not, but the collector in me compels me to buy each new set and it keeps the gaming companies in business.

Right now between the player pack and the original box sets I think I have enough control panels, tokens etc. to fly about 20 at one time. At home the largest I have ever played is maybe 16 planes with 8 planes on a side and 6-8 players. Most of our home games have been 2-4 players with 4-12 planes in a fight.

At ROCKCON last year I think we had 10+ players each controlling 2 planes each which is probably the largest single action I have flown in.

    ROCKCON 2013:

So what is the largest you have ever played? While we are at it what do most of your games average in size?

The largest game I've ever played was 5 players per side each with 4 planes. It was pretty fast. Lots of shooting.

If I remember correctly it was a demo game at Cancon when Jon (steel rat) & family plus others joined Zoe & myself & we had about 12 + players involved.

I have been in a game at a Brisbane club where there were over 10 players must have been about 4 or 5 years ago. It was in that game that I fully learnt to use the hight rules as there were lots of collisions in that game.

It is nice to see that large tables, even with several planes for each person, are played and appreciated!

I love the Caproni picture, may I post it to BoardGameGeek?

As far as I am concerned, I had been invited a few times at the foolish "Largest WoW Game Ever" events. Here the story:

The larget game I have run so far had 16 players with one plane each. The largest I've played in had 12.

When I run games in Schenectady I usually get 12-14. On the 13th I'll bu running a couple of cames at the Game-A-Thon at Proctors put on by the Schenectady Wargamers Assocoation.

Having read Andrea's post, it occurred to me that no record for WW2 aircraft seems to have been attempted yet.
    How about it chaps?

    Andrea,

Feel free to use my pic. It was taken at ROCKCON in Rockford, IL in late Oct 2013 when the bomber visited our area.

24 players in the "Time of Aces" tournament in Cardiff in 2011. This was 24 players in a single action. Quite the furball

Judging by the last effort we'd have to allow two years for its circumnavigation Rob !

    OK,
So, on the numbers, this might not be anywhere near big. But the scenario, and the location(s) make it into the scale, somewhere. The scenario had the biggest plane of WWI (well, if it made it to 1919), and the location was a hemisphere of the globe. Only six players on two continents:

Alastair [Doug] was in Toowoomba, Australia, myself [OldGuy59], in Comox, BC, Canada, Eric [7eat51] with Dave [degodave] in Bloomington, Illinois, USA, and Andy [freebird-52] with Gordon in Haughton, Louisiana, USA.

See the game AAR here: SND - International Skype Game - Slay the Leviathan - 8-9 June 2013

I've run larger numbers of people and tournaments with more matches, but not as many planes over a single game (the count was up to 13 scouts entering the playing area by the end of the game).

Well, "The Largest ever" is fun but quite a flat dogfight in the end. Your large games are intriguing indeed!

Thanks for the press cut and the pictures. Yes I will post something around, if single owners of pictures allow!

Sadly I've only played small games. 5 players and 6 planes (I had 2) and 3 players and 12 planes (I had 6)
Would give my right.... no left arm ..... to be able to participate in a bigger game some time.

I have played a game with 6 players and 24 planes on two of the old maps!!!! It was crazy small and over very quickly. Lots of laughs by all for sure!

For WWII, I have played a game with over 30 planes managed by 3 players. One player played the B-25s on a bombing run, which accounted for 10 of the aircraft. Another player played 14 intercepting 109s and 190s, and I played the six escorting Mustangs. Yeah, the Germans were mauled, we didn't really think the B-25s could defend themselves so well! Plus the Mustangs just ate the 109s up. So really bad chit pulls by the German player.

    Sounds like a blast!

Hope no one flew a SPAD XIII. With such a small map it must be a game just avoiding the edges.
    But flying a Dr1.........

Origins 2013 was the largest game I ever participated in. It was run by the master and it was 24 of us (12 vs 12) on 8 maps. I think this year (2014) we only had 21 or 22 planes on the 8 maps. It was a lot of fun but you had to watch your 6,12,3 hell you had to watch your 1 thru 12. haha.

14 players and had a blast it was at Cold Wars it lasted 4 hours late in to the night. If you got shoy down you grabbed another plane and jumped in again.

The largest for me was on 17th of june on the School that I teach, with 32 planes and 32 pilots (mostly my students).
I think it has to be the Scandinavian record?

There was an attempt at Origins 4 years ago to break 100 players; I think we managed somewhere in the 40s. Ken (The Cowman) might remember.

Largest game I've played in consisted of 8 players, each flying two aircraft on two of the old Nexus mats. As for solo? I think 10-12 aircraft are about where I've topped out. Nowhere near 62!

Many times over the last 5 years, 7 of our local gaming group members flew 2 AC each in a single game, BUT...
My largest was a Play By e-Mail (PBeM) game run by Mark Gibbons; 40 players (1 AC each). Mark has probably run 10 or more such large games over the past 3 or 4 years.
They have been awesomely enjoyable, mid-winter pastimes for me; 2 Turns/week, massive dogfights usually, but he has also run at least one, same-size, balloon busting scenario.
His most recent game finished just a few months ago; it was a 40 AC dogfight that pitted fliers from the Americas against the Rest-of-the-World. We "Americas" won handily to my mind ... although my Fokker DVII suffered the bloody EXPLOSION CARD in Turn 8 ... aaaaargh ... and by a burst from a one-trick SPAD XIII ... double aaaaargh ... but simultaneously my return burst destroyed it ..... yaaaay.

Aaron, that is quite the motley crew in your OP picture, especially the bloke in the number 19 jersey; I believe I have seen his picture in Post Offices in Milwaukee.

Huh. I'll need to amend my response... I've played in a couple of those as well. Didn't think of them, however, as Mark does all of the heavy lifting!
