James - Excellent reference for WWI and later British submarines is Maurice Coker's Observer's Directory of Royal Naval Submarines 1901-1982 (1982) ISBN 0 7232 2964 3. Lots of drawings by J. Lambert. Also any of several volumes by Commander Richard Compton-Hall, the director of the Royal Naval Submarine Museum in Gosport. He can probably supply what you need from his files.
If you are in time-saving mode, I believe David Penngaly (sp?) (Pendragon) makes a coastal sub in 10mm, and I know (Rod Langton) Langton Miniatures makes one in 1:200.
Specific to the C-Class boats. Those were modified by VIckers from the original Holland boats. You could achieve the same thing by ordering a Holland in 1/200 from Peter Krtina (Hai Modelle) and building out the casing and conning tower on that.

Still on the workbench but in serious danger of being mold-ready. The P-30A will be spun into 8-10 1930's AAF variants. The AAF heavies, excepting the prototype B-17, may be their only appearance in 1:200. A whole bunch of other "XP" interceptors in the pipeline. Curtis's, Seversky's, etc..

A project that may be of more interest for gaming is recasting a supply of aircraft for friends who are doing mid-late war Essex Class CV's. We will be recasting our Hellcat, Corsairs, Helldiver, Avenger, and probably also the Dauntless. They will be unpainted, 1/200 scale resin castings. Landing gear and prop's to be worked out. Ditto the decals.

    Do virtual workbenches count?

I wanted to do a full-color German/Austro-Hungarian mini-aerodrome target for Shapeways, which meant I needed a good Albatros D.III model. Since I didn't have one, I might as well add that to my list of models, which means also doing a Mercedes D.III engine before even starting on the plane. Then -- and this is new... the whole thing needed to be texture mapped, which is something I've only played with a little bit. Before doing a texture from scratch, I started with one I borrowed from elsewhere...not a perfect fit, but pretty good for a proof of concept. Next I'll scrap that one and do my own texture; I'm thinking of Jasta Boelcke's white-tailed Albatroses.

Once all that's done I'll wrap back around to the aerodrome/target, with some canvas hangar-tents and wooden hangars. That's a lot of extra work for a plane that ends up 1/4" wide on the final product, but it's fun work.

Now if only I could paint as well as my computer can!

A change of plans has me abandoning the 15mm Star Trek (for now), and scrambling to finish some minis for D&D5. No plans for painting planes in the foreseeable future.

I whipped up this for Son#2.

    And this for Son#1.

Five SPAD XIII to finish repainting and adding decals. Four Snipes to add decals to. An RE8 has had a few bits of paintwork done after which all of these will need varnishing.

I then have wide choice as to what to tackle next in the repaint line. Perhaps two DVa will be next up or Jasta 12.

Again this month I'll most likely not be doing any aircraft. I'm elbow deep in plastic 28mm WW2 Japanese. Will be building and painting these this month. Also finishing up painting my Wehrmacht 28mm figs and painting up a few infinity sci-fi figs. Also doing some hedgerow scenery for Normandy and some bunkers for the Japanese to defend. Will have to wait until next month to get the US Marines underway. Good luck on your projects everybody.

The biplanes probably have a maneuverability edge on the Battlestar craft, but they're at a major firepower disadvantage. ;-)

I have both these models. Without knocking the models, the Pendragon U Boat is rather generic in design and could be converted to any type of sub WW1 or WW2 the only thing that would need changing is the conning tower and scratch build to suite. I rather like the Langton model. I have made one for WW1 &WW2, the only difference is that I stuck a 1/200 37mm AAG on instead of the 13mm MG that is supplied with the WW1 kit. Doug

For December I am finishing of my 15mm 1745 Jacobites (started 15 years ago) only 6 more figures to paint. Then I will be finishing of my 7YW British and French in Europe
(started about 18 years ago) only about 30 mins in total. All based for the "Black Powder" rules which I have got to say is a very good and useful set of rules.

Just received my 1-144Direct decals today, so that means my Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 will be done by the end of the month! Along with a repaint of the brown balloon and a Rumpler CIV...and then there's all the OTHER stuff in various states of completion.

Ah, well, it keeps me off the streets and gives me an excuse to avoid grading English essays...

    All the best,

still working on my b-17s plus im converting a b-25 to a 75mm gun nose variant. i do have a problem with one of the 17s and need some advice. its something of a fantasy paintjob, the old aircorp blue and gold on an early b-17b 9ive always though an early b17 would look nice in this livery). anyway the blue painters tape wasnt all its cracked up to be and bled through rather badly. do you guys have any suggestions to fix this?

A pair of early Tiger I's in 1/72 to prop up the Ost Front -
These were 'ready made' models I was given or picked up cheap but they were grey ?! As far as I can tell only four grey ones were delivered to combat units so I did a generic paint job, turret numbers I had to hand, no specific unit so I can use them as any tiger unit.

These are some Panzer Aces, reading from their barrels
Well done, Dave. Dunkelgelb/Schokobraun scheme makes them generic for any front. The numbers are just right. I do admire the weathering effect on the wheels.

That's how they came Andy - I'm undecided whether to paint over some of that barrel detail but having read about Kurt Knipsel and his comrades recently I may play them as just that - Panzer Aces ! I was pleased with the wheels too, just stippled the paint on with an old brush. Glad you liked them. No planes yet - banned until Christmas day !!

This only turned out to be so, so, but it did give me two ideas. One for a method of photographing "nighttime" shots and also to use enlarged photographs as I go along in order to see what corrections are necessary since my eyes aren't what they used to be.

I suspect that's a whitewash used for winter camo -- it was allowed to "age off naturally".

  45. #45

Yeah, it was meant to look like whitewash. I took an old bottle of flat white paint that's actually starting to "thicken" slightly and dry brushed it on.
BTW - there are a couple of more pictures in the Soviet file on my page.

I finally finished something on my "virtual workbench" -- full texture-mapped "painting" of one of my Shapeways models. Why bother, you ask? I want to use it for a full-color sandstone German aerodrome model; and some day -- some day -- we'll be able to print in full color, and I wanted to have one ready to throw at my dream 3D printer, when it arrives. It could use more weathering, but I think I'll just say this one is fresh from the factory.

What I learned: 1) I can paint a physical model a lot faster than I can do a texture map. 2) Generating different wood grain for each plywood panel is probably overkill. (I wanted discontinuities where they met.)
