Thread: How did they fight their war?

Default How did they fight their war?

Apart from the bombers on all sides how did tactics differ from country to country. I know the Germans fought defensively as the British always came to their side of the line but what about the other nations? I have heard that the French fought differently from the Brits for example but how?

Tactics also derived from opinions on how air power should be used -- for ex.: The Germans and Soviets used theirs as adjuncts to the ground forces, which is part of why so few high-altitude and/or long-range fighters are found on the Eastern Front.

Given the sub-forum we're at, I think Gary is looking for World War One information.

I did a little research online and came up with this PDF:

Maybe not a general tactics list so much as a tactical overview of the planes, but interesting nonetheless.
I'd also have a look at the Dicta Boelcke. German pilots typically followed it religiously:

German Gothas flew in diamond formations of 4, close together for mutual protection. Groups of these flew in a wedge, 1 diamond, then 2, then 3 - 24 aircraft.

At night, formation keeping was impracticable, so they flew independently.

The French were the first to group their Fighters into Escadrilles, predating the German Jastas by some weeks!
