Thread: Pimping for WW2 Soviet Planes!

  1. #1

Default Pimping for WW2 Soviet Planes!

    Cheers!

I know this thread goes against the grain of the mainstream WoG player and even against Ares' marketing policy... but I would like you guys to take it with an open mind
As (probably) most of you I started as a WW2 aviation enthusiast when I was a child, and the planes I loved were Western Allies and German fighters... well, Japanese too!
If I have to pick up my top three all favorite WW2 fighters those would be the Spitfire, Me-109 and the 'Zero'... close followed by the 'Corsair'
It was later in life when I turned my head to the East-Front and I found it's full of beautiful Soviet fighters, dive bombers and more ... and the Air War in the East wasn't a place for the Luftwaffe aces to shoot down planes by the dozen on each sortie. That was true only on the first year of the war... later on the East had very contested skies that can make for really fun scenarios. Largest air battles in WW2 were fought on the Eastern Front (largest air-battle was fought over the sky of the battle of Kursk, just like the largest armor battles).

Ares is moving (apparently) to late war planes, and in terms of Western Allies we already have the P-51 and Spitfire Mk.IX -- and the promise of a P-47 Thunderbolt, F4U Corsair, P-38 Lightnight, and I'm forgetting something else

So this thread if your Soviet Planes Lovers to pimp for your favorite plane!

    Pics are a must!

So, the first Late-War Soviet plane I would love to see is the Lavochkin La-7 or it's predecessor the La-5

Those were as good as its German counter parts and it would give for very nice painting variations from white-snow cammo to grey-blue air superiority like the one flown by Allied top-ace (64 kills) Ivan Kozhedub.

as you guys see La-5 and 7 painting options are colorful and some have very nice nose-art and those cool lines written in Russian-alphabet

I would not ever call myself a Soviet Planes Lover, Gallo Rojo, but I do appreciate your thread and effort to promote the EF airwar, which is fascinating in a way.
These planes, sometimes flying coffins, sometimes superb designs, just give players more options and ignite their (our) imagination, letting us invent many more interesting scenarios.
I will definitely support your efforts and surely post my EF projects here

It goes without saying that WoG must have an official L-2 Sturmovik. That plane was the most-produced combat and two-seat aircraft ever, and described as more important than bread for the Red Army
And again... it comes in all possible cammo variants and did carry almost every imaginable weapon, from bombs, anti-tank guns, rockets, molotov-cocktails! or you name it! french fries! salad side! onion rings!

I don't have any particular favorites among the Soviet birds; I will say the current WG2 rules lends itself more to the EF style of air combat (low-level, and mostly turning) than WF (lots of altitude changes, not much turning).

Oh, and don't forget the MiG-1 and -3 -- not terribly effective, but still present.

I'd go back a bit and add early-WW2 plane, I-16. You can see here some different painting schemes: Soviet (left column), Spanish Republicans (upper right), Chinese (right middle) and Bulgarian (last plane on the right).

This plane should be a must for any new multi-engine special series. It was not only one of the best ground attack aircraft of the war but also an extremely successful heavy fighter, night fighter, and reconnaissance asset.

It looks we are forming a group of EF airwar enthusiasts here.
Moreover, those unusual soviet planes' colors resemble me the German fantasy schemes of the Great War.
What a good source for repaints.

True David! To be precise, there're 5 summer soviet painting schemes, 3 winter ones, 3 Chinese, 3 Spanish Republicans and 1 captured Romanian, Bulgarian and Finnish each.

Apart of that there are 1 winter camo Yak-1 card, 1 winter camo lend-leased P-40 Tomahawk and 1 Soviet summer camo for Airacobra in "Fire from the sky" .

This is interesting painting scheme for early Il-2 (one-seater). They were used in 1941 and 1942. Due to heavy losses 1 seater version was replaced by 2 seater one to provide defensive fire backwards.

I would love seeing an official mini of a Polikarpov I-15, not to speak of the I-16!
Although I doubt Ares will make one, since it seems they're moving to late-war right now
But the I-15 was a great plane on its days. It can make for scenarios not only in the Spanish Civil War, but also in the Far East flying as part of the Chinese and Mongolian forces (backed by the USSR) against Japan. And those were no skirmish: oposite forces added up to 600 planes.
Of course we would need a Mitsubishi A5M "Claude" too to fight with

Any chance to get a Pe-2 together with a Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" as the next bombers special pack?

I find your attitude defeatist and panicking, comrade!

Jokes put aside, if chosen well, "I-16 and friends" could make a wonderful series!

I can only applause and support these "early war" needs

Some painting schemes for two seaters. A standard one, introduced in 1943:

In 1943 additional markings started to appear on the planes. Here the plane from 617th ShAP (summer 1943). note the colour markings on tail and spinner:
    a/ orange tail cap (and, probably, rear part of the spinner) as standard for 617th ShAP;
    b/ 1st Squadron - red spinner tip
c/ 2nd squadron- white (?, not confirmed) spinner tip
    d/ 3rd Squadron - yellow spinner tip.

Here's the plane from 281 ShAD at Tartu, Estonia, in October 1944, flown by Hero of Soviet union, V.V.Titovich:
