Thread: Target Rich Environment

    Default Target Rich Environment

After playing a game or two attacking ground targets depicted by the cards that come with the damage decks, I thought I would have a go and paint up a few miniatures. 1:44 scale is close to N gauge, so I started to look at some railway buildings, but quickly came to the conclusion that while in scale on the ground next to a model aircraft, on the playing board they look too big. The are after all supposed to be ground targets some distance below.

The next obvious scale to try was 6mm and as luck would have it I had some unpainted resin models that I had been messing about with a while ago. After rummaging around I found a few likely candidates and mounted them on bases that are multiples of the standard size target card. I added some cast lead vehicles. A bit tongue in cheek, and only for a bit of fun:

    1. The British Chip Shop. It's loss would be a great blow to the moral of the tommy and weaken his resolve to fight on.
Mounted on a single card size base worth 5 damage points

    2. The Ambassador Sausage Factory. A large scale industrial plant churning out breakfast sausages by the ton every day. Mounted on a triple base and protected by anti-aircraft archie this represents a formidable target deep behind the front. Expect this to be heavily defended and hard to put out of action. Worth 15 damage points (plus 5 for the AA unit):

    3. The distribution depot. A vital cog in the Ambassador factory supply chain and found closer to the front line. Mounted on a double base for 10 damage points. Here the vital rations are split into smaller quantities and repacked ready for the troops in the front line trenches. Take this one out and moral in the trenches will plummet. It won't be a permanent solution but it could be enough for the big push to break through.

Very nice additions to game table. I love them!

Can you perhaps attach the phote with plane aside? Just to give an idea about the scale.

Super models, in the true spirit of Warmington on sea WWI edition Jez.
I'm sure that Neil and Chris the originators of "Bomb the Chippy", and the "Worst Factory in Germany" would kill to get there hands on models like that. All we need now is the after the raid models.
    Well done that man.
    Rob.

P.S. Leave the Tonic bottling plant out of it.

Just had another thought Jez. How about a ciggy factory, and I think we both know which one I have in mind.

Here are a few photo's with the targets in the thick of the action during a recent game. Since this, I produced bespoke target cards for the models to fit under the bases allowing you to lift the models off when the aircraft overfly. It also makes determining the accuracy of the bombing simpler as the cards have the standard red dot.

The factory is the largest target and it's base covers 3 standard game cards, the distribution depot 2 cards and the shop just 1.

The buildings are 6mm or 1mm = 1ft. This works out to be 1: 285 scale. Ares model their WW1 aircraft at 1:144. I did try this same scale with the buildings, but on the table they looked out of proportion to the models in flight. The eye expects objects on the ground, further away, to be smaller. 6mm models are cheap and plentiful on the web, and just about at the limit of what I can see to paint these days. I happened to have these already, but just hadn't painted them up. The smaller shop measures 26mm x 23mm : height 35mm and fits on a single card base 68mm x 44mm. The factory model is 82mm x 48mm : height 34mm and fits on two cards with the AA gun taking up a third card to make a larger target area.

The game designers had already produced target cards the same size as an aircraft card and base / movement card of 68 x 44mm, and so I wanted to stick with those same proportions. I also allocated 5 damage points per 68 x 44mm standard card area, like the game cards included but I guess you could make them what you want. The buildings themselves are just a 3d representation to improve the aesthetics of the table, underneath are the real target cards, with the red dot pin pointing the aiming point. I have printed and laminated these. As an aeroplane overflies and bombs, you can lift the 3D model up and replace it later. Plastic card cut to multiples of game card size form the base for the cast resin models and are built up with milliput to give depth before flocking and the adding of the vehicles. I've just really mimicked what the game designers did in taking a aeroplane card game to a miniatures game.

Very nice looking set up Jez.
I agree totally about the scale of the buildings etc.
When I do my Naval actions, I use 1:1200 for ships, and only aircraft scale ones for seaplanes landing or ships picking up survivors from the water.
For aerodromes with aircraft on the ground, I also use true scale, but not for overflying unless very low as in strafing. 6mm seems about right for most other tasks.

As I said, Jez, they look really good on the matt. I wonder where I can get some for a train station for an Origins game next year.

If you do models for the French flyers, may I suggest a wine depot and cheese factory?

    Cheers!
