Default Yet Another AAR from our 2nd Monday Game at The Family Game Store, 13 Oct '14

Another fun night of Wings of War/Glory... we had seven, and were able to barely squeeze in three games.

My placeholder pic, the opening of dogfight #1.

    More later!

    Waiting with excitement new images!
For those of you who are with chin in the ground, I think the mat is available somewhere in BGG. I had it in my images, but apparently someone delete it.
    Thanks

You guys like that mat??? Really?!?!

Rob, I think you've been reading ahead!

Paul, thanks. It still looks a little off to me, but maybe that has something to do with the partial colorblindness.

And so, back to the game. We had seven. A decent turnout. Myself, Mike, Mike (Capt Willard), Todd (Pseudotheist), Bob, his son, and... ohhh... shoot! The other fellow's name has slipped away. Sorry about that.

Originally, I was going to take an SE5a, but someone said, "Lets do a squadron of Snipes." Since I haven't used mine in quite awhile, that sounded like a good plan. Mike B, Bob, and his son were on the German side, and went with D.VIIs.

Capt Willard and I went for the pink Fokker. He broke right, and in hopes, I suppose, of wedging the D.VII between us.

But the Fokker outfoxed us, and flew toward the center of the map.

I was able to turn into him and get off a shot. At some point, it may have been now but I don't recall exactly, the pink Fokker took a pilot hit.

Capt Willard then made his move. Finding Bob as he headed into the thick of it.

Then Bob and I found ourselves in a nice raking fire.

"What next?" That shot ended the turn. I stood there and thought real hard about my next three cards. Bob likes to press the attack, so I thought I'd do a long shallow turn, followed by a hard turn, and another shallow. If I planned right, I'd have him in my sights.

Jackpot! One of those rare occasions when the plan works just right.

Bob pulls away (which surprised me, but I think he may have had rudder damage), but Mike B. pulls into view. A burst from my guns sets him on fire.

He draws his fire damage, and spirals to the ground in flames.
Oh, I just now noticed the third German is an SSW D.III. I don't recall ever seeing him during the game. Funny how that works.

Mike B. returns with another pink Fokker after a full turn has passed.

That's okay. I believe we still have the upper hand. Capt Willard hasn't even taken damage.
Ooops. So much for that. Capt Willard's first damage card is a big boom.

But Todd exacts revenge by taking down Bob.

Things are happening fast. Mike B returns the favor I did his original plane, by setting me on fire. And, in the background, Bob's son falls victim to a Snipe.

Three on one? The odds look quite good.

    Even better!

Mike B's Fokker destroys the Snipe in front of him. I take my fire damage, and, BOOM!

I guess I spoke too soon. In any case, while I was putting away my plane, I heard the two remaining pilots talk of breaking things off. Mike B took a shot at Todd, but it was after an Immelman, and he had pilot wounded (again), so it didn't count. Suffice to say, the battle ended in what I will call a draw.

The next scenario, the ever popular "Bomb the Crossroads"!!! This time, two Capronis, with a Hanriot escort, will attempt the mission, while two Aviatik D.Is, an Albatros D.III, and an Oeffag D.III defend.

    More tomorrow...

Approaching two bombers can be dangerous. My primary objective in trying to shoot one down was to do it in such a way that I didn't take fire from both. Thus, my plan was to fly up alongside the green Caproni, pull an Immelman, and follow him to the target, spewing bullets along the way.

We exchange shots as I pass. His front gun jammed, as I recall.

Thus far, everything was going according to plan. I was in a great position to harass the bomber on his flight to the crossroads.

But with one shot, my guns get jammed. Drat! And, I'm smoking (but we didn't have smoke markers). There was a plus, the Caproni's rear gun jammed as well. So I could trail him and not worry too much.

The bombers rapidly approached the crossroads, while my wingman had taken up a great position, just behind/below me. He was able to deal some damage. And at about this time, my guns became freed up.

The green Caproni turned to make a run on the crossroads. I took a hit, a second smoke, so now I'm on fire.

The Italian Caproni dropped his bombs, and they hit. Their escort fired on me, as did one of the Capronis, and I took enough cumulative damage to knock me from the sky.

Capt Willard dropped his bombs, and another direct hit on the crossroads.

The bombers split, heading back toward their lines. An Aviatik goes down.

I was about to bring a wandering SSW D.I onto the field, when it was decided to call this one in hopes of getting in one last game before the store closed. Bob and his son had to leave, so we decided to do stick to the theme, and do an Italian versus AH three on two dogfight.

    More later...

Time was evaporating at the game store. With about 40 minutes left, we went for something simple - fighters used in the last game. Todd pulled out another Hanriot, and I had one of my Shapeways' Hanriots with the Fulco Ruffo di Calabria motif. Three B-firing Hanriots versus two A-firing Aviatiks sounded like an even engagement.

Todd swerved, while the rest of us charged head on, hell-bent for leather.

My opponent and I then looped back around onto each other.

And then our wingmen did the same, while Todd wove his machine in between.

My opponent and I played at least six mirrored move cards in a row.

The result was one of those odd "I can shoot you, you can shoot me" conga lines.

Which turned into something off a furball.

Things spread out a bit after that.

And then, like a rising tide, we all came rushing back in.

    An Aviatik burst into flames.

And that's about when our time ran out. I guess it was a draw, with possibly the Italians having the upper hand. In any case, good times were had, and I look forward to next month, when maybe some Handley Pages will make an attempt to bomb the crossroads.

    FIN.

Thanks, folks. It's my hope that you have as much fun reading them as I have writing them, and the group at the game store has playing them.
And, as always, I owe a huge amount of thanks to the guys who show up on those Monday nights. We always have fun, even during those nights when we have no idea what we are going to be playing until we are standing around the table.
