Most commentators have considered the pre-WWII metal Wiking aircraft as the original 1/200 model aircraft. That is not correct. Friedrich Peltzer, the owner of Wiking Modellbau in Berlin and Kiel, Germany, was actually mentored in Copenhagen by Henning Cortsen, who produced a range of cast metal 1/200 aircraft Mr.Cortsen and Pilot as major stories in and of themselves. There are a couple of excellent articles which I could translate if someone could guide me in posting them. One short anecdote for now. Mr. Cortsen knew Anthony Fokker through the Royal Danish Airline, which used Fokker aircraft from the early 1930's. The 1/200 Fokkers supplied by Pilot were among the first airline display models. Please, no comments here about "Little Fokkers".
Last month we were in Copenhagen. There the great Danish model builder and collector, Carsten Breiting, arranged for us to visit the private corporate SAS museum at Kastrup. I needed to document their intact Pilot Dornier "Wal" to help me repair my broken one, but I took pictures of the others in their outstanding displays. Enjoy!
