The Hun were persistent if nothing else and made another run against the munitions depot. I was again flying my trusty scout; but this time Smithy, flying a Nieuport 16, was coming along as my wing man.
The Hun aircraft coming our way were both familiar in the E-III and unfamiliar. The big bomber had a split fuselage and unknown armament. The E-III was flying to his left. Smithy was going for the E-III. I thought to help; once the escort was gone we could both focus on the bomber.
We engaged them as the reach the AA guns, but both Hun birds were flying too high for the guns to reach.

I strayed too close to the bomber and it cost me.

But I managed to strafe to E-III pretty good, but my engine started to cough a a sick feeling came over me. With my engine failing I knew I was out of this fight.

I ducked down to avoid the Fokker, but Smithy wasn't so lucky.

Glancing back for a moment all I could see was falling debris. The E-III, now missing a wing, spiraled earthward. Fortunately Smithy's plane survived the impact. Less fortunately Smithy's aeroplane was in no better shape than mine; neither of us was up to tackling the bomber. Helplessly we watched as it dropped its bomb load and destroyed the munitions depot...
