Thread: Favorite Air movie

    Default Favorite Air movie

Blackronin had a thread about your favorite 3 movies. I was thinking what is your favorite airplane movie. For me I have to say:

12 O'clock High. I can watch this movie every week with no problem. I know there are many others so I ask what is yours?

I was so excited about the Red Baron movie until all the crap about Manfred and Roy Brown meeting up etc..... why can't script writers avoid adding in pointless inaccurate rubbish !!! (rant over)

Have a guilty pleasure - quite like Glory Boys but probably has to be Battle of Britain

Think its a genre well overdue a 'proper' film. Albert Ball or Jimmy McCudden would both make great subjects for a film

However watch out for FURY coming soon - its not planes its tanks... but looks awesome proper Sherman's and the Tiger in it amongst others

It's Battle of Britain and of course The Blue Max for me.

All great choices. I was just wondering what others watch. I can go on about all the plane movies I like Air Force/Flying Tigers/30 Seconds Over Tokyo and on and on. From the previews of FURY is see they are using a M4A3E8 (Easy 8). The only thing I see that is strange is why would the crew wait in the tank with the hatch unlocked waiting for the Germans to drop a grenade in there? To me not a smart choice.

A lineup of some of the tanks at a place in Virginia I have been to. They had a Sherman working with a marine squad showing how they worked together in the Pacific. Great demo.

Good choices, all, that you've mentioned above. I think I'll come down on the side of "Dawn Patrol" as my WWI favorite and "12 O'Clock High" as my WWII favorite. But "Battle of Britain" is a very close second in the WWII era...perhaps I'm biased beause I'm a Yank...

Back in the 80s, If memory serves, the Brits came out with a mini-series called "Piece of Cake" - I quite enjoyed that, too, especially seeing all of the real Spits together at once. Heck, even "Foyle's War" has some tasty footage of Spits in it! And I love the Ju-52 shots in "Where Eagles Dare", too.

    All the best,

    G'day Harry!
Piece of Cake is available on DVD via Amazon as are the Foyle's War series which I really loved. Apart from Spitfires & Riley cars it has Honeysuckle Weeks. What more could a man want?

I watch it on Netflix, Barry - I've only recently had it recommended to me by a friend, and this morning I just watched the next episode in the queue, with the German bomber crew that survived the crash with their Funkmess-spezialist who was subsequently assassinated by the Jerry infiltrator. And Honeysuckle Weeks was an essential part of the episode! While not exactly my type, she is a breath of fresh air on the show.

I have "Piece of Cake" on VHS but haven't watched it in ages - I imagine one day I'll upgrade to DVD.

    All the best,

That has to be mine as well. BoB is my fav film, just ahead of Zulu!
It'll be interesting to see what Messrs Spielberg and Hanks next offering comes out like, the one about the 8th Air Force in WW2.

If you are into P-47's, "Fighter Squadron" (1948) is a pretty good movie.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040353/reviews

I am also quite fond of "The Dam Busters" (1954).

Let me defend that point, chaps.
There are some reasons I strongly support that choice for.
    1. Air battle scenes: Superb in general so far.
    2. The soundtrack. Have you listened to that? It is just perfect and thrilling..."Troops in Berlin" is my daily wake up call
    3. You can watch it with your WAG (wives and girls) from the very beginning to the very end explaining her the storyline with ease.
    4. I talked with people who have nothing to do with the air warfare and they were truly involved in the story. I had a pleasure to explain some events to them.

633 Squadron WW2 (just love mossies)
See you on the Dark Side......

Going offtrack slightly, but whilst pondering this question I was reminded of the BBC1 TV series back in the mid to late 1970's about the RFC which used RC scale models of BE2c and Eindekkers, but I can't remmber what it was called? Anyone got the title in their memory bank? I wonder if it has stood the test of time/

"Wings"; used real flying (and non-flying) replicas from the Shuttleworth collection too!
2 - Disc DVD box set available from Amazon

Well worth the 20+ hours of watching, in my opinion!

Not WWI or WWII, but Flight of the Intruder is an old favorite. (It's like Top Gun, but with attack bombers instead of fighters and more realistic flying. "Fighter pukes make movies--bomber pilots make history!")

My favorite by far is "Tora, Tora, Tora". After that, I like "12 O'Clock High" and "Memphis Belle". Of the two B-17 movies, I prefer 12 O'Clock's theme of leadership. My wife prefers the drama of Memphis Belle (she loves that movie!).

I remember seeing a show on PBS about the RAF in France at the beginning of the war. The one I saw was great--Hurricanes---. I remember that the CO was killed when he flipped his plane and the new XO had to take over as the war was starting. I only remember seeing one show but it was a good one.

    theres no way i can pick just three so heres a few in no particular order;
blue max- its got everything one could want from an air themed war movie
air force- because of its REAL star the b-17d mary ann
wings- it might be a bit overwrought but you have to remember when it aired all its plot twists and convolutions were novel (for film anyway)
12 o clock high-i think really captures some of what those men who really did fly in bombers endure
flyboys-if only for its visuals. it really does remind me of a modern day version of wings though
red tails-im a great admirer of the tuskegee airmen (now if theyd only make a major motion pic about the aztec eagles)
the war lover-b-17s (that buzz job), steve mcqueen, bill bixby etc whats not to love
strategic command-james stewart and b-36s. again, whats not to love
behind enemy lines-(yes this most definitely qualifies as an air movie) this ones something of a sleeper for me. i cant quite put my finger on why i like it so much but everytime i come across it channel surfing (and i mean literally every time) i end up watching it.

I never seem to tire of watching BoB or The Dam Busters. They might not be the best aviation films I have seen, but they are two of my comfort films, if you will. I always enjoy them.

GMT has a new game coming out on the Dam Busters.

Sue and I just rewatched the 7th season of Foyle's War - well written, acted, directed, and costumed/set-designed show.
