Thread: Based in Alameda

    Default Based in Alameda

Greetings from the Pacific! I tried Wings of Glory out the other day and had only one question: Why not sooner? I really like WWII planes and am more immediately interested in the War in the Pacific.

I was able to find a sealed copy of the original starter that includes 4 planes. Is there an issue with using the smaller sized cards included in the set or do I need to change them out?

I did a bit of research here then picked up a few USA/Japan planes, and more are coming via on-line store with other accessories. I am also interested in finding plane lists and missions.

Looking towards Europe: I was going to purchase the B17-F from this site. What bomber(s) could I buy on the German side that would be an equivalent? If the plane equation is 2-1, 3-2, or something else that is fine.

Finally, a reference in case people don't know about the history of where I live, the "island" of Alameda, CA:

I will hopefully receive my package and be flying by Sunday!

    Scott,
Welcome from up North, Vancouver Island.

The base game has the smaller cards, with the latest "fast" planes (P-51, Spitfire IX, etc...) having larger cards, cause they are faster and needed longer arrows on their cards. Not an issue, just a solution to the speed. WWII planes may be a bit of a problem if you are looking for the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO), as Ares hasn't put out any Wings of Glory planes, yet. You are looking for Nexus Wings of War after-market planes, and sometimes at inflated prices.

The Germans didn't have heavy bombers, so no real equivalent to the B-17 or the Avro Lancaster. However, the FW-190 was used to shoot them down. Two to three fighters to a bomber might be a good mix, but I too am a WWI "specialist". Others can tell you better.

    Good Luck!

Welcome to the 'drome Scott from a now sunny East Sussex in England - for all things WW2 the place to look is here in the files section and download this document in particular which will be most helpful to you as it lists all the Nexus/Ares products to date.

Welcome to the 'Drome Scott from UK North Squadron.

Happy Hunting and Flying. If you have a lack of players their is always room for 1 more in the Fire in the Skies campaign either Pacific Theater or European Theater of operations. Just follow the link below and it will take you to the section with everything in. If you're up for it PM me with your interest and we can take it from there.

Thank you all for the welcome! I will be spending some time looking at all the links and downloading files. I like the single player variants out there and may need to check them out until I can find local players. I noticed some great looking accessories on this site. Are there any must haves? The altitude stands, propellor, and damage (flame) markers looked real interesting. I may need to add some of those to my B-17 and Fokes purchase.

Since I am looking for South Pacific I picked up the Ares coast map and was thinking of putting ocean adjacent. Any recomendations on a blue map/accessory that can be used to extend the ocean further of the coast?

Also interested in what the Fire in the Skies is all about and will eventually be PM about that.

Welcome from a fellow Californian, Scott! Just down the coast in Santa Barbara and play frequently with my sons.

My folks used to live in Alameda when my dad was in the Navy, and we've still got family & friends up there. Will PM you when we visit next and will bring some planes along. We fly both WWI and WWII and have a small collection of PTO planes. Hope you find some!!

I am soon to have a triad of Mustangs and Nakajimas as well as a few other items. I ordered the coastal map and will be picking up the Sails of Glory sea map on my way home tonight (thanks for the tip Phillip).

I just realized that B-17's were used in the Pacific, just not as famously as in Europe, so I might hold off on getting German planes and balancing out with more Japanese flyers. Nakajima did make some heavy bombers but they do not seem to be available yet.

@Steve: my father was in the Coast Guard stationed in Alameda. If you take the West side tube to downtown Oakland side there is a great game store: Endgame. They have great miniature tables, if you don't mind bumping into some Warhammer folk. Definitely look me up!

G'day Scott& welcome to the 'drome on behalf of the pilots who fly in NSW down in Australia.
Whilst I mainly play WW1 I am participating in the Fire in the Sky Pacific War Campaign (PTO)
You might like to check out the After Action Reports in WW2 to see what the chaps are using for gaming mats. (everything from Blue sheets to wonderful printed mats!)

Whilst Ares have not yet released many Pacific War aircraft Armaments in Miniature offer a big range of WW2 US & Jap aircraft in unpainted resin at extremely low prices.

Pics of their Lily Bomber, Kate Torpedo plane, Dauntless dive bomber & Bell Aerocobra attached.

Welcome from Brazil Scott!! As some folk said before the size of the cards depends just on the speed. The High Speed planes released until now are the Spitfire Mk.IX, Ki-84, Fw-190 D, P-51 D. I think that the "add-ons" of the AA are supercool, but not necessary. Its your choice. Joaquim (Blackronin) have made a great solo chart. You can use them for any plane of WWII and I can tell you its great. Have fun!
    Thanks

Welcome from a fellow Bay Area pilot (despite my screen name suggesting otherwise)! I've only got WWI planes in my collection, but would certainly be willing to alternate playing WWI and WWII if you're interested in a meet-up sometime. It would give me a chance to learn the WWII rules, and have a human opponent for my old biplanes!
