Thread: I'm a hat person.

  1. #1

    Default I'm a hat person.

I spent my almost my whole life growing up thinking I didn't like hats.

Somewhere in the last ten years I realised this was wrong. I am a hat person. Now I have cupboard exclusively for hats. It's a big cupboard.
Here is a random selection of my headgear (photographed for a different purpose).

I am now thinking that I need a flying helmet for wearing during WoG and at other times.
    Can anyone advise?

I play WGF, so the more retro the better, I think.

Among the collections of original, claim to be original and nasty replica WW2 Leather Flying Helmets on ebay I found this:

    That's the one I have!
My goggles are a bit more flash than that, and I have a white silk scarf, a monocle and a selection of medals - all bought from ebay.

    Pipe? - ooh, no!

I must look out my Snoopy ears and nose, from the years when I used to be the Easter Beagle for the kids at our Easter training camps.

The flying helmet has arrived and is every bit as good as you could want.

    Thank you.
There's at least one missing from the photograph.

And somewhere there is appropriate harness to go with them.
It's a similar addiction to the one I exhibit here, but the symptoms are more serious and the treatment more expensive.

Fox, check out The Fedora Lounge (www.thefedoralounge.com) --it's just about everything you could want to know about hats from the first half of the 20th Century and the garments worn with them. Be warned, though, there is some real snobbery there... and if you do go, tell 'em I sent you. (Just to rub their noses in it, the Nose In Air clique among the members there don't like me much. LOL)

Yeah, there are a couple admins who like me, but a lot of the founding members have the attitude that "if you don't dress to the nines in 1940s Vintage 24-7-365, not even repro acceptable, you are Subhuman."

Ah. '30s and '40s elegance? Not really playing to my strengths, I'm afraid.

Right now I have a hard stop at the outbreak of war in 1914, and suspension of the suffrage movement.

If you can't be roughed up by a posh woman in a sash, frankly, what's the point?

Phillip, both--they do have a strong reenactor presence, but like I said, there's a schism in the community. Bear in mind, it's a forum, not a site--but any question you could imagine, there's probably somebody there with an answer. I'm mostly inactive in large part because one of the mods there was dating my gal's best friend (even had her move from Toronto to California) and screwed her over, without even offering to pay for her ticket home--and the character of site staff is a direct reflection on integrity of a community IMO.

I'm afraid that we must get permission from said Legal Eagle before indulging in such a revelation.
I on the other hand as a closet wig wearer have come out of the hat box.
