    Default 'Cheap fix' mats

    Hi all,

I've been playing WGF with my brother and some friends a fair bit since picking the game up and have been enjoying it a lot. I'd like to get some of the game mats that Ares makes in the future, but I can't really justify spending £40+ to get two of them for now. That said I'd still like to spice up our games so that we're not fighting over the endless fields of flat oak can anyone recommend a cheap and easy solution for this in the meantime? Games Workshop used to sell roll up mats of faux grass for just this kind of thing, but they don't seem to any more.

PS - Similar thing for some kind of 'objective' markers! I only have the trench and AA gun cards from the Duel pack, could anyone suggest some cheap markers (buildings, convoys, trains) to spice up my missions?

    Thanks!

You can search in Hobby&Garden shops/centres for a kind of artificial grass. They sell them in different sizes, made of different materials.

Here you can check how I made one of mine

Might be worth having a look here for target cards Kev.

That's great, I had a look in the files earlier but couldn't find the exact section with this kind of thing in it. Thank you!

Try your local market and look for a cheap table cloth (fablon type material), mine does a 4' wide by any length for £5/meter. The one I'm looking at is a two colour blue mix, like the sea (I hope).

You could always try Simon's method for WW1 landscape. A length of that anti weed membrane from a garden centre, the thick non porous stuff, spray or hand paint the terrain on.

Then there are carpet tiles, easy to store/paint etc.

Keep an eye on the carpet shops Kev, you might find a suitably useful off cut you can use - I bought a grass green off cut 4'6"x 8'+ for £15 years ago & use it for all sorts of gaming.

I just printed a historic trench map on vinyl in a local shop. Looks different, but great.

Before I got my Ares matts I was using maps and mapboards from some boardgames I had on hand. Not exactly scale but the look was much better than the plain tabletop. Good luck, hope you find a solution that works for you.

An Angels 20 map would work in a pinch.

Also here is a link to some buildings that I have downloaded awhile back.
    They are paper models.

Scroll down to about the middle of the page to find some WW1 hangers.
