    Cool Aviation Museum in Kbely

Rainy Sunday in Prague, lazy to all houseworks... Darling, what about visit of Czech Air Museum?
We went for a visit the the biggest Czech museum of Air Force (and cosmonautics [by the way, do you know the difference between a cosmonaut and an astronaut?]). Free of any fee, just several families there, great
You can see here SPAD VII, Avia B-534, Me.262, Avia S-199 (Czech Me-109G with He.111 motor), F-4, F-5, F-84, almost all Czech Migs, Viggen, Drakken and many, many others.
Please, let us invite you to a virtual tour of our Air Museum in my gallery. I am uploading some photos here too.

Why have we not seen pictures from here before? Great photos. I have to ask where did they get an F4?

If I remember well, it was a change about 15 (?) years ago. Czech Air Force sent a Mig-21 to UK and Tommies sent us a F-4 (it was in much better condition there!).
Interesting is a story about F-5 - that is a product of espionage. In 1981 Czechoslovak Air Force received two big boxes with stolen parts of F-5. Czech enginneers built it up and test some parameters (never flying).

Does anyone have a model of it?

    Thumbs up

That looks a fantastic museum Daniel.
Love the dioramas with the pilots & ground crews.

Nice collection! Only thing is, they need a lot more room to space things out, and bring the airpark indoors... weather is not good for metal.

Oh yes I think Eduard does beautiful models of Avias, even with resin parts. If you really want, I can check it

Totaly agree. I remember my first visit (I was about 13) - Mig-21 and Mig-23 looked absolutely different.
Do not talk about that F-4 - my heart cried yesterday - it had really nice shade of blue and now looks like they found it somewhere in tropical forest (hope its pilots or technicians never been visit the museum again...).
But I was surprised of how well look indoors - for this part of museum:

Few times in Prague, and never visited this great museum. Shame on me!

It is a very interesting place. Thanks for the pics, Daniel. I wish all the museum planes were indoors. It is a common problem, unfortunately. The blue F-4 is in a real danger, I am afraid.

    Great little tour Daniel.
I especially like the way the indoor aircraft are set in a small diorama. It brings them to life much more than just standing in a display hall.

The good news is that there seems to have been an increase in staff so all bits of the museum are open at the same time. Last time I was there we were chased out of sections that were closing for an hour or two

Yes, it is much better than years ago - indoor exhibitions are really nice (by the way, I remember that I saw diorama style exhibition firstly in UK museums [HMS Belfast, Trench and Blitz Experiences in IWM]), but outdoors are not as I wish. But glad that the museum is still living and staffs improve it constantly.
The other thing is absence of "Yes, honey, you can touch it and try it." laboratory. On the other side, there is no fee for entrance, just for souvenirs.

A friend brought me back a T-shirt from the museum this year which is superb, with embriodered logo rather like the good Mrs Kyte puts on the UK shirts. Much better than the previous iron-on design.

If I get to Prague next year I may have to stay an extra day or two....

Which logo do you mean, Steve? The sword with wings and laurel wreath?

No Daniel, I meant the museum logo, with an Avia biplane and "Letecke Muzeum Praha-Kbely " written on it. I'm proudly wearing it even as I type.

The museum is not alone in having to store aircraft outside, and the weather in your part of the world is not very kind in winter. I was surprised when at the US Naval Aviation Museum to find that several 'one-offs' were sitting out in the open, albeit awaiting restoration. Even so, they will be out in the open for years and will gradually deteriorate.
