Thread: New arrivals, slightly squashed.

    Default New arrivals, slightly squashed.

I've been waiting for the Rolands to become available, so I've only just ordered and received my new arrivals from the latest series (plus a couple of others naturally).

I bought them from a popular UK retailer for WoG, and when they arrived the packing of the items for shipping left something to be desired.
I can't work out it they shifted in transit, or were just packed astoundingly badly, but one of D.VIIs was positioned bulging out from the parcel, so that its box had been very badly crushed, so much so that plastic inner had been forced partially out of the cardboard box.

It is a tribute to whoever designed, implemented and approved the WoG packaging that the model was completely undamaged.
Not for the first time, I have thought it remarkable that these relatively delicate little animals move round the world so unscathed.
Well done to those people; I raise a glass to you.

And then, naturally, I noticed how delightful the aircraft are in person.
Again not for the first time, I thought how the pictures on the Ares website do not really do justice the genuine article.
It's not that the pictures are not excellent; indeed they are. If anything their accuracy is a little unflattering, makes them appear larger, and therefore cruder somehow.
When they arrive in one's hand there is something magical about the how the details combine with size and shape to make them look just right.

I'm particularly struck by how pleasing the DH4s are, compared to their image; and also the Tripes which I've just bought for the first time.
    In my opinion, another triumph.

Yes the later Ares models like the Bristol Fighter, D.VII & German 2 seaters are really excellent. Shame about the Sopwith Triplanes top wing.
(Please do not mention this to Boney!)

You are right, Barry! Boney, a true perfectionist among us would kill for that top wing! I love his passion

We discussed this many times and after few last series I must say that usually 2 of 3 are perfect and the third is a little ancient tragedy (said someone words "Boelcke" or "desert Spitfire"?). But I am glad I can choose from the rest of them

Ah. Well. There is all that.

It should be said that my authenticity bar is set very low at the moment. I know almost nothing about the correct paint schemes, or the exact details of the real aircraft.
Until March this year my enthusiasm for biplanes was only that of any small boy; or someone who has maintained that wonder into adulthood.
And in truth, discovering WoG has only moved on my sophistication a small amount. I am unashamed of my innocence.

But I do understand the basic aesthetic that makes planes fly, so I have a basic sympathy for looks right.
My comments about how much I enjoy the aircraft once it's in one's hand was entirely based on that.

The more I get into this Fox, the more I realize that you are truly blessed. The best way to approach Wings of glory is with the Innocence and wonder of a small boy.

Rob is right - my sighs just the curse of the former platic kit maker.

That is an interesting issue. Some treat the minis as models in the game, some as playing pieces. Although I enjoy a strong model making background, these are mostly playing pieces for me

They are playing pieces to me...but when I paint one I do put my all into it to make it special. All the ones I've painted, no matter how badly they have flown, mean more to me than all the bought ones.

Sadly, given enough time, they will all have their day to fall. At least all the ones I've flown have.
